They won't play it down. If the numbers are good, play them up. If the numbers are bad, ignore them.

Of course he's the mayor and we have to support his chief!

Maggie: I'm sure Wynn will try to put some kind of "wham-bam-shablam" spin on this so that no one ever really knows what he has said regarding the matter. Glad Dupree is able to consult other communities on law enforcement, because he sure as hell hasn't been able to do anything with ours.

Aaron, you have a point...they have already been ignoring them, so I suppose nothing will be new!

I wish WDAM would do a better job of investigating. They should ask the hard questions...why is crime up? What is Dupree and/or Wynn's plan? Is Wynn an effective chief...these kinds of questions. We all know there'd be no comment, but at least put them out there. Nobody gives a damn about useless wham-bam-shabam mobiles and all the other stupid stuff Wynn brags about. Murder up 100%...are citizens safe? Why the increase in violent crime Chief Wynn? Why is your number of officers still at record lows when crime is at record highs? If Dupree is such an expert on law enforcement then why can't he recruit anyone to work for his Chief?

NOTE: I don't mean to discredit the officers working for HPD. They are doing the best with what they have, and still have their hands tied so much of the time. They need help and it's a shame Dupree is too hard headed to admit his police chief was a bad choice and get rid of him. What will it take?

From WDAM:

Homicide is up 100 percent over 2005, with 10 this year compared to five last year.
Rape was up 8 percent, robbery saw an increase of 53 percent over 2005, aggravated assaults were up 5 percent, commercial burglary saw an increase of 16 percent over last year, grand larceny was up 40 percent, while auto burglaries were up 43 percent. Auto thefts were up 61 percent, and arson rose 89 percent.

I like the artwork WDAM did on the story, where it says "Hattiesburg...The Crime City" with "Hub" spray painted over by "Crime".....note my new Avatar.

I would have thought the drive-by shootings that took place very close to DuPree's mother's home would have been the trigger (no pun intended) for him to do something.

Good questions Zoom...anyone that is involved with their neighborhood assoc. should attend the meeting they are having on the 14th at 5:30 at the Cultural Center (old library) and ask the mayor some of these questions. I plan on jotting some notes down and ask some of these questions! It should be interesting !

I'll go where I damn' well please, day or night. These pissant criminals we have here don't scare me one bit.

It's gotten to where people around town won't even make eye contact when you say "Hey, how y'doin'?". When did we become such a nation of crybabies and willing victims? It's disgusting!

I'll have no part in victimhood, thank you very much. Let the thugz come. I will fight them with everything I can bring to bear, and I will never submit.

I can't believe how low my hometown has sunk.

Unless they are doing something illegal, more investigating won't do any good. I'm unsure who WDAM endorsed, but I do specifically remember the Hattiesburg American endorsing Dupree for re-election (http://www.myhattiesburg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6303). That's when to do all the investigative reporting, that's when to show all the cards and let us know what's been going on for the past 4 years. When the voters have a chance to do something about it. Unfortunately, they'll give his campaign speech and they'll note the others running against him. That's all.

Well I'll be! Surprise, Surprise, Surprise is right MD.... Again I ask, what will it finally take to get the crooked administration out of office??? How many more lives must be destroyed??? I am sure that there are even higher numbers than that if the FULL truth were ever revealed and the officers were allowed to write the reports the way they are SUPPOSED to be written!!!

58, I don't know if they plan on answering questions or not but as secretary of my neighborhood assoc., I damned well plan on ASKING questions! I suspect though it will be the same ole song and dance...maybe I can enjoy seeing them squirm a little bit anyway.

Well at least the media will record that you asked ?'s and they just looked at you. Maybe they think they don't need to answer to the citizens anymore.

Everyone in Petal, Forest, and Lamar Counties needs to be worried about this. They need to support the residents of Hburg in voicing their opinion about the crime "in town". I live within 1/2 mile of the city limits. Obviously I shop in town. I'm not overly concerned about being "a victim" but I am more aware of my surroundings, especially those late night trips to Wally-World. This has gone way past being a Hattiesburg problem and has become a regional problem.

Baloo, the chief tried to get a reserve unit started right after Katrina hit...he had "0" takers! I can remember when the p.d. said they NEVER would have a reserve unit... funny how when the **it hit the fan, they changed their minds and begged for help...heck they can't keep officers they pay, I hope they are not stupid enuf to think people will put their lives on the line for "zip!" I would have thought at least some of the gang banger friends of the admin would have applied but he told me personally NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON filled out an app! I had to laugh in his face!

"Wham-Bam-Shablam-Ham"!!!!! Settle down peoples. I just decreased the crime rate by 83% after my morning dozen and coffee. If you must know i've just ordered a several new training videos that are sure to kick up the level of law enforcement in Hattiesburg another few notches. I've personally evaluated these videos and have even been implementing their tactics for some time now. Sit back and watch as crime sinks to -17% in 2 weeks.

Maybe we shouldn't judge it on a year to year basis? :smt102

youre right

i was wrong

one day ill learn to RTFA

I just assumed this was a follow up article from some HPD Press release because of the 'OMG CRIME IS DOWN' that went on last month.

i think one of the interesting things to read in TFA is that murder is up 100%, but the rest of the crime is probably in line as to what it should be considering our population increase...

except for theft...

and isnt new orleans known for murder and theft?

I think we all feel the same way OG. Your awareness of your surroundings should be hightened at night. It's sad to see that the numbers tell all now, and still little is done to correct the problem which should start at the top of the chain and work it's way down.
