View Full Version : How many miles have you chalked up?

On another board that I post on, they're talking about the number of miles on your car and when to get rid of a car because it has too many miles.

Most of them are saying that right around 100,000 is when it's time for a new car, which makes me laugh. I was taught you take care of the car, the car takes care of you.

I currently have a Honda Accord with 85,000 miles on it. When I bought it a little over two years ago, it had 23,000 miles on it. I fully intend to keep it until it dies...which will hopefully be around 300,000. The Sner drives a 1992 Jeep Cherokee with 200,000 miles on it and while it doesn't pull the mountains like it once did, it's still going strong.

We have a 95 GMC Xtended cab truck that has close to 300,000 on it ... and it still pulls its own weight ... makes long, out of state trips ... and is still capable of pulling a load ... now, granted it sounds like an old work truck ... but a tune up every now works wonders ... the hubby says this will be the one that's sitting in the back yard as a fixer up when he's 50 :) Gotta love American made!

My grandfather still has his first car - a 1957 Chevy Bel Aire hardtop. I don't know the exact mileage, but it's WAY over 100k.

My grandmother had a '72 dodge Coronet with 300,000+ on it. She gave it to me & I put another 100,000 on it & gave it to my little brother & he drove it for a few of years, (don't know the mileage) It went to the great junk yard in the sky on Halloween night 1989 when a drunk driver skidded into my mom's lawn where it was parked & T-boned it.

I've had two sunfires ... a 99 and an 03 ... totaled my 99 out in July of 03 with a lil over 100K on it and had to "get out from under" the 03 ... $500 a month to maintain it was a little much :smt102 ... now I have a 96 Intrepid ... not sure of the mileage ... but IMO it's well over 100K ??? And I LOVE it ... I'd really like a Durango ... but I know that's way out of our price range :smt086 Oh Well ...

Those were great cars!! Rode many a mile in one when I was little.
On the other side of this discussion, I sold a 1978 Mustang in 1990, with 71,000 miles on it. Buyer couldn't believe the odometer hadn't been, ah, adjusted, but I had my paperwork from tire replacement and other work to back it up. My present 2003 Honda has 12,000. Expect to drive this one a lonnnnnng time too!

the 01-02 accord, odyssey, cr-v and one more have recalls on the transmission.....

the first one started making a banging noise, the second and third slipping, the fourth wouldn't move, and #5 is in it now......

It's still running, too. Probably about 10 years ago it was rear-ended by an 18-wheeler and most of my family might have been dead had we been riding in a different vehicle. The thing is like a tank. After that accident, Grandpa found replacement parts and today you can't tell the car was so much as dinged, much less had the entire trunk crushed in.

I have a '98 accord with 156k on it. It drives as good as it were new. Honda makes some amazing engines. I plan on driving this until at least 200k, gonna try to make it to 225k. I'm trying oh so hard to resist not getting a new car.

nooskye - i looked at the durango's when i was buying. they are very nice. the one thing that held me back was so many people telling me that they just drink gas! you would probably spend as much in gas as you would on your monthly payment.

I have never had a car long enough to put 100k on it. I will probably keep the one I have now to see it happen. I have a 04 Prius with 47 K on it.

i've got a 94 gmc sierra i bought used in 98 with 74k miles on it. It now has 172k miles on it and only problem so far was had the transmission rebuilt last year. i'm looking at getting a new one pretty soon though, but its been really nice not having to pay a car not the last 4 years, haha.

My last car, 95 merc tracer had 120K on it when it died
My current car, a '00 saturn lw2 has 141K on it. I think the transmission will go long before the engine. It runs without a hiccup, save for some transmission issues that only happen when I step on the gas or it gets hot... all I do is turn it off for 10 seconds and it resets... some sensor or something, but it costs $800 to replace, and it's really not worth all that... when the tranny goes, then I'll just repair that... or get a new car.

i've got a 94 gmc sierra ...

That's what ours is ... my dad bought it new in 95 with, I think, 10 miiles on it ... we've never had to replace anything on it excpet the tires and the fluids ... It has some minor body damage from my brother hitting a deer (or at least he says it was a deer ... never seen side damage from a deer though??) Anyway ... it's a great truck ... if ever we buy another one, it'll definately be a GMC ...

My friend, who lived in Perry County, had a deer run into the side of his car when he was driving. Looked like he'd spun the car around and caught a telephone pole...

After totaling out my second car in one year - I now own a 05 Jeep Liberty with 40,000 miles on it. My fav car - a 1981 Honda Accord I bought for 1,100 in 1986 with 85,000 on the odometer. I added another 100,000 to it and an additional 4 years then sold it for $1,000.00. Nice...real nice...

I like my 3.7 V6, maybe it's because it's the smaller Liberty that gives it the get-up-and-go. Believe me - it get's up and leaves. However, if I had to do it all over again, I would buy a F150. I tow a camper and bought the Liberty because it made my weight requirement for towing, but it is really squirrely with pulling the camper.

My Sner is looking to replace her little car. They're thinking about either a Subaru Outback, a Honda CRV or another Jeep.
