Dog loses tongue in shredder
HAZEL MOLLISON (hmollison@edinburghnews.com)

TARA the Labrador cross liked nothing better than eating up the biscuit crumbs dropped by her owner's children - until the day disaster struck.

The mischievous pooch sniffed out the remains of some shortbread which had fallen on to a paper shredder in her owner's Craigentinny home.

But as she stuck her tongue to retrieve the tasty tit bit she activated the machine, trapping her tongue which left her howling in agony.

Her frantic yelping alerted owner Linda Brown who ran across the living room of her home in Loganlea Road to find her pet bleeding badly.

The injured dog had to undergo two operations on her mouth, and had to have one-third of her badly-damaged tongue amputated.

Moral of the story, don't leave your shredder turned on, and don't let your kid put food in the shredder. A dog's tounge is long and thin, and can bypass all those saftey features intended for humans. Watch out for your dog and take this notice to heart.

All shredders will come with warning labels for dogs now. You no longer have to use common sense, just RTFM and do exactly what it says. If it doesn't say watch your dog around the machine, then you don't have to.

It's something I never thought of... I'd have never thought that would happen. Of all the things to go in a shredder, the tongue of a dog was not one of them.

Well, if you have an inside dog, they are like babies. They get into everything. But your right, you'd never think to protect a dog from this. It's just an accident and I think people today just think that accidents shouldn't happen. If we pass enough laws, sue enough people, and put out enough warnings, nothing bad will happen.
