i just recieved an "offer" to transfer to a dealership in Jackson....
before i was here at this dealership, i was at another local dealership doing Finance and Insurance (basically a paper pusher who gets paid major money)....
I have worked for a Mazda, Dodge/jeep/chrysler, kia, and suzuki dealerships here in the hattiesburg area......
to make a long story short, they fired our General sales manager here and he's "recruiting" everyone to run with him in Jackson.....
I left my F&I position because of a new GM that was hired at that dealership to drop back down to selling cars, and now i have an opportunity to go back to doing what i loved doing at a kia/hyundai dealership....which they also have a Mazda/Dodge/jeep/chrysler bldgs also.....
what do you think i should do? of course michelle doesn't like the idea of the drive everyday, but in my payplan, i would get a demo and gas paid for.......

Your thinking of following a fired employee to another dealership?
How much more income is it? I'd only go if it were double. Why don't you just take the fired guys job, seems theres an opening.

the situation is they brought in a new gm, and he is bringing his crew from the jackson store that i'm going to....
income would triple at least......

here's another question.....anyone going to come to jackson and get a good deal on a new car?

Get it in writing and what if the Gm you are following gets fired again? Will that affect you? If you stayed here, could you find a position like you like?
a lot of people work a lot. Could you even get an apt or a room up there to lessen the wear and tear on your body 2-3 nights a week? Have them give you 1 day off? Will you have off weekends?

Do you have Honda accords 2006 or 2007?
Your family is more important than any amount of money. Money is just green dirty paper.

i'm going Thursday to work out all the details and get everything in writing....
if my gm/buddy gets fired again, then oh well.......i'll still have an upper management position that i will still be able to work....
we're nomads and carpetbaggers in the car biz......when you know you can make money with a certain manager, then we tend to just work together and come and go as a group......

I had a job in Meridian a while back and commuted for two months from Hattiesburg to Meridian. It was not fun. I was so glad when we finally moved to Meridian.
A long commute can get old really fast...especially when you have to leave early and get home late.

Carsalesguy I know someone now Looking for a good Vehicle in Jackson and my family go through new cars fast did the Commute to Jackson for a year myself and I hated it but made GREAT money. All my family and most of my freinds are in the Metro Jackson Area and I was born up there.Do you realize the Amount of money you'll be spending on Rent.Clinton is a nice place Homes are really high up there.Brandon is outrageous wish you luck but as a EX-Jacksonian I say stay or pick another place safer.

Lived in Jackson and glad to say we moved back. Commute sucks. I would not want my husband to do it even if he was making a lot more money. Being there for your family and helping coach ball and watch games and stuff is important. But on the flip side I have always wanted my own business and not had the cash, so if you can swing it, then I wish you the best. That's a tough decision, but I think it's one that you need to make WITH your girlfriend.

car - you really need to get Michelle's support before you jump into this. As already mentioned above, it's just a job. The more money you make - the more you spend. If Michelle's ticked at you for being gone all the time, she may be more apt to spend more than usual to get back at you - and it will all be for naught! :)

How many hours of work is this going to be? Define work as when you leave the house and when you return to the house. ex. lv. 6am - rt. 10pm (16 hours) When a person makes more, they get into a higher tax bracket and they spend more.
How do you plan on having an occasional "nooner" if your an hour away from your wifey? Have you considered that?
Every young man, with a wife and young child has been told this before....do they listen??? Noooooooo...most get greedy and go for the brass ring.
Sales positions are especially tempting because the results and rewards are so easily quantifiable, much easier than something boring like growing a family.
You will not ever find a man on his death bed saying..."I just wish I had spent more time at the office."

---i leave now at 7 and may get home at 7, could be as late as 11 (it has happened....)
---i wouldn't be selling cars......i would be doing F&I
---i'm fat and ugly so no nooners for me
--- there will be 3 other people riding with me back and forth everyday, plus i would still get my day off PLUS a weekend off.......i don't remember what a saturday looks like without looking at a parking lot full of cars :smt118
lets say in the past 1.5 yrs i have worked at dealer a b and c
dealer a i would make anywhere between 4-7k a month
dealer b i would make anywhere between 6-8k a month (doing F&I)
dealer c i would make anywhere between 700 to 1800 a month.
dealer c is where i am at now......
do you think i can actually survive? i sold 15 cars here last month, and i made 1900.........something is just not right where i am at now......

12-11-2006, 11:34 PM
what? you have to understand though that i have to EARN my money the really hard way.....have to call people, constantly follow up with people, maintain my inventory.....
it's harder than you think....i don't come in and hit a time clock, do my duties, then leave.....if i don't sell a car, then i don't eat........
plus, you have people constantly trusting you with their credit information, making sure the financing is in place, etc etc etc.
there is big money in the auto business...but you have to really work for it......
just like your mechanic that did that tune up on your car.....he is charging you $75 an hour......then he works on 15 cars, and even though it only took him 1.5 hours to put a fuel pump in, he's charging you 4 because "the book" (mitchell time) says that it is how long it is supposed to take......

i wish that our public servants (i.e. police and fire and all support personnel) could see that type of money.....
the reason that i said that i can't survive now is because of the way that i used to make money.....sure i have savings and all, but i'm trying to be able to pay for my daughters college, have a decent house, and something nice for michelle and the baby to ride in.....
my bills for the house and the car alone is over $2000, as well as everyone else......and michelle doesn't make 4-5k a month, it's more around 25k a year, which after taxes and insurance, pays just for the car and the house note....no insurance, no food, no electricity, no cable, no internet, etc etc etc.......

Talk to Michelle. Decide what your long range plans are together. Then pray about it, together. Either way (going to Jackson or staying here) you are going to make a sacrifice. You sound like a person with marketable skills, so getting a job at another dealership should not be difficult if this did not work out in Jackson. If your goal is to open your own dealership one day, then maybe this job in Jackson would give you the means to do that. Would Michelle consider moving to Jackson at some point? What would you be giving up by making the move? Difficult decisions, yes, but certainly ones you can make together. I most assuredly understand you wanting to provide a better life for your family. Why else would you be working so hard in the first place, right? Best wishes to you in your career decisions.

Hawk, thanks so much for your last comment. My husband worked in the transportation industy for 20 years...I would venture to say he was gone probably 85% of our married life during those years...IT WAS HARD! NOTHING ever broke until he was on a charter somewhere, NO ONE ever got sick until he was in tim-buck-to somewhere, family members didn't croak until he was gone....well, you get the message.
Money is NOT everything...it was nice to have all the luxeries it afforded us but it certainly took its toll..knowing what we know now, how much valuable time we lost with each other, with our child, we would not do it again...what matters most IS FAMILY. I almost lost my husband a few years back because of several massive heart attacks...no doubt due in part due to his lack of rest, stress and poor eating habits while at work. I thank God each and everyday he found it in his heart to let my hubby recover and us become close again. We have probably talked more and enjoyed each others company more in the last 10 years than we did the previous 26 of our marriage.
For carsales I would only tell him he will miss alot with his daughter that he can NEVER get back if he is gone all the time. IT WILL take a toll on her...been there, done that! PLEASE think it over for the long term.

this is the way that i see it:::
my dad was constantly gone when we were younger.....he went to tulane to work on his PH.d for 7 years part time and working at the church and USM all at the time.....
he did it, and even though we missed him, he provided us with a great life....

I'll have to agree with some of the others about spending time with your family. I am single, but I have always worked a lot, and I feel like I really missed out on a lot. So much stuff my friends experienced and everything, and just so many missed oportunities...you can never get those back. I've done well from a financial standpoint. I have new cars and a nice house and 4 wheelers and such, but all of that is just stuff. In time all of that stuff will wear out and be useless. Money cannot buy happiness, nor can it buy back lost time. As I get older I realize this more and more, and sometimes when I put my head on my pillow at night I wonder if I hadn't been so consumed with getting "stuff" how things might have worked out differently. Life's not very long, and to quote George Strait, "I've never seen a hearse with a luggage rack." It's family and relationships that are really important in life, not "stuff".

Looking back over all this, carsales guy can you get f and i somewhere here? Or go back to A and B if they're close?
On the other hand I had 3 uncles that worked with Western Geophysical and were gone to foreign countries for months at a time. The families are still together and the men did what they had to do to provide for their families. None of these men had college degrees and the families worked it out and all compromised.
My father worked for soil conservation and sometimes had to leave early in mornings and work on Saturdays. Sometimes the contractors would want them to work on Sundays and he drew the line there. He thought everyone needed family time and a day off.

With the additional info. it sounds better than when you first posted. Having Saturdays off would make up for getting home late IMO. I can't stand to work Saturdays. Fortunately I don't have to with my job now.

How do they get away with that? Do they have a bunch of salaried salespeople there that do nutin????
If you can make 80k working 80 hrs week, i'm changing my vote. I say do it! You never know, sometimes when you are far away from home, you make the most of the time your there. (Quality vs. Quantity) Every Sunday plus one weekend...where do i sign?

Just be aware of the changes with your 3yr old. For the most part they adjust, but if you have a very specific routine and a super strong bond there may some damage if all that is changed. Example, My husband who had been home every night of my daughter's life decided he would work out of town when she was 3. He would be gone 1 wk and home a couple of days, then gone again. They are VERY close and always have been. They had a routine they went through every night and when that all changed she suffered. She became unpotty-trained. Would just stand in the middle of the living room and cry. You could ask her what kind of juice she wanted and she would just fall out like you were going to spank her. She began asking if her daddy was ever coming back. It was a nightmare. It broke my husbands heart and he decided after about 4-6wks that the money wasn't worth it. We could deal with struggling to pay bills, but not he emotional meltdown of our 3yr. old.
Now I don't know your situation or your life, but this is what happened to our family.

the place is huge....it's so darn slow in hattiesburg and nobody can really seem to think when it is going to get back to speed......
i talked to a wholesaler friend of mine yesterday, and he even said that because it was so slow that he couldn't get anything nice at a good price at the auction......buyers were paying retail for a lot of stuff and he couldn't figure it out......
we are not anticipating tax season to be good in the car biz this year since all the major retail that is now open out west......people i think are going to be going for furniture etc etc this year since it seems everyone bought a car right after katrina with FEMA money.......
i was up there thursday, between 12 and 4, and in those 4 hours they had sold 7 cars and at the end of the day when i talked to them they had sold 10......it's really really really busy in that market.......
