i heard rumors from my mother and husband that a fellow in his early 50's died in a motorcycle accident yesterday that happened some time after lunch yesterday on S. Main in front of the Chevron station. i didn't hear anything about it on the 6:00 news, and i didn't catch the 10:00 news, so don't know if they announced anything about it. i was told two similar stories, but can't confirm either one -- basically, the fellow was on a motorcycle going south on S Main and was going in between an 18-wheeler and a garbage truck which were side-by-side (with one of them apparently in the turn lane in front of the Chevron station and the other vehicle going straight). as he got up in between them, the vehicles apparently caught the guy on the m/c in between them and supposedly cut one of his legs off, and then they said he was pinned in between the two vehicles and suffered massive internal injuries. some say he didn't die immediately, but died after going to the hospital. i was told a name, but the person wasn't sure of the last name, so i don't want to say. i was also told that his girlfriend was somewhere behind him on S. Main driving in a car when this happened. i was also told he lived somewhere out from carterville/sunrise or in that vicinity.
anybody know any substantiated details? it sounds really sad...

what's the name of that game where you start out at one end of a group of people and whisper something and see what you end up with by the time it reaches the last person? that's what this reminds me of, and that's why i titled it as a QUESTION when starting the thread, because i had already gotten a little different info from the two people who told me what they had heard.
thank u, MD, for ur research, and CSG, if u hear any more, i would be curious to know.

Apparently the person survived but lost a leg. What a life altering change...especially here at the holidays....I suppose he needs to be thankful he wasn't hurt worse.

it's stories like these that make me balk at riding a motorcycle.
However, I think majority of motorcycle accidents are the fault of the cyclist acting like an idiot.
These stupid kids on these sportsbikes make me want to stick a steel pipe in their front spokes. A few months ago, Friday backed up Hardy st. traffic and this girl on a sportbike comes weaving in between all the stopped cars so she could get up to the light. She went past the 20 cars that were in front of me, not sure how many she went through to get where I was. And yesterday, some idiot raced up to the light on 49/42bypass just so he could do an endo at the light. I didn't enter the intersection because I saw how fast he was going and wasn't sure he was going to stop. I looked at him and made sure he knew he looked like an idiot. This isn't counting the countless times I've been passed by bikes going at least 40MPH faster than I was going, and I usually speed a bit.

CB you need to add this to the I HATE thread. I can't stand it when people act stupid on the road whether it be a car, motorcycle or what. Dumb people just piss me off.

Stupid people behind the wheel piss me off too because when they are behind the wheel and I'm behind the wheel there is a potential for their stupidy to effect me and my family in some way.

thanks again, MD, for the update. i don't know if any of you saw the photo in the HA from Wednesday, but here is a link to the article and photo. If you look real close you'll see that it looks like the motorcycle is wedged sideways on the bottom of the back of the garbage truck.
con was saying he especially hated when young kids didn't act responsibly on motorcycles, etc. well, this fellow was in his 40's and doing approximately 45 mph and coming up probably about two or three car lengths from the red light. WHAT WAS HE THINKING??? i, too, feel bad for him and believe that he needs to thank the "One Above" for still being here!

.
WRONG, its the idots in cars not paying attention.
I wish it required HALF the knowlege to get a drivers license as a motorcycle license.
A car safety course should be required as well.
