So it sounds like Nick Saban is going to be the new head coach at Alabama. Talk show host and the like have said Bama's program was in the dirt and couldn't get a quality head coach. I guess this goes to show that the media was wrong.

40-50 million bucks (and I ain't talking about hubbucks) might just make the journey bearable. :smt102

Has Alabama's program really declined, or is there just more parity in college football now than in the Bear Bryant glory years?

Will Alabama ever be satisfied with its head coach?

Not that it should matter to the head coach. If he gets terminated, he will still leave a millionaire.

Saban will have Bama an national contender in a couple of years... He turned the LSU program into a winning program, and he will turn the Bama program back into a winner. Auburn better watch out, and everyone in the SEC.

This reminds me of the Tubby episode when he was saying he isn't leaving as he is fitted for his new wardrobe!

I've decided to name my first born St. Nick Saban.

Good luck with that. :smt118

Although...one of my good friend's allowed her husband to name their son Manning Loren. Extenuating circumstances, though. Wayne had almost been killed in the line of duty, and Desiree felt that all things considered, it might be generous of her. (Manning for the football family; Loren for the Vietnam vet who stepped in and subdued Wayne's attacker until back-up could arrive)

Saban will be a good fit for Bama, but I think recruiting will not be as easy as when we was at LSU... All this lying to the media saying he wasn't going could affect when he is trying to recruit someone by telling them they could be starting or something.. They could think that he is just lying to them. But we will just have to see what happens.

I don't think it will affect his recruiting that much. Guys still want to go to Bama because its bama. He is coming in with a pretty decent team in place. Over 50% of the roster were freshmen (or red-shirt) this year. He just needs to work on those wide recievers, that was lacking this year.
I just hope they give him a chance and not expect a perfect first season. Just give the guy a chance and some time.

Nope. I can't believe Turbeville still has a job. He adroitly led the Tigers from a possible National Title right out of the top ten. Sheesh. I want to throw up.

Saban? Yeah. Problem is Alabama is still looking for a Bear Bryant clone. There will never be another Bear. Unfortunately, all who follow him have to chase his ghost.

Saban taking the Alabama job (even with the Miami Dolphins break in between the stints) after coaching at SEC West rival LSU and leading them to a National Championship does seem Tommy Tubervillish. It's fine to leave to a better job, but going to one of your biggest rivals just seems to be almost a slap in the face. Honestly, it doesn't seem right to see Stave Spurrier at South Carolina after his glory years at Florida.

Gene Stallings is the only Alabama Coch that has come close to being truly accepted by the vast majority of the Tide faithful. it seems if you don't win ten games regularly and beat Auburn regularly, you are toast.

i remember Bill Curry getting a brick tossed through his house window after losing to Ole Miss 22-12 on Homecoming 1988. The next year, he led Alabama to an SEC title, and then promptly took off to mediocre Kentucky! Dennis Franchione only lasted a year or two before leaving to Texas A & M. But, I guess with all the millions he's getting paid, Saban considers this worth the risk.

Actually, I heard something today that might make the above statement null and void. Somebody told me that Tuberville's contract has a clause in it that says if another football coach in the state of Alabama is given a salary higher than his salary, then his salary must be adjusted upwards to 95% of the other coach's salary.

Has anybody else heard this?

Wouldn't surprise me. What's-his-face at LSU has a clause like that in his contract. He has to be at least the fifth highest paid coach in the SEC, and if he wins the national championship, he has to be in the top three nationwide. A lot of athletic programs have raised an eyebrow to the amount that Sabin will be paid.
