I heard today that Steve Buckley will be the new football coach at Petal High School. Steve was an assistant at Petal in the late 80's and earl 90's. Steve coached with Curly Halman at USM and left with him to go to LSU.. He also was an assistant at Alabama. He became the head coach at George County in 1996 and left after one year to start his own business Bucko Cleaners. His dad was the pastor at Petal Harvey Baptist church for many years. He is a great football coach but has been out of the business for almost 10 years

Football is still in his heart though.
He is such a nice christian man. I could go on and on about him.
I think he will do good and so many know him in Petal since he lives there and has his business there as well.

I hope he is ready for the pressure-cooker. He is a good guy and comes from a great family. I wish him well.

Think someone who has been out of coaching for 8 years will be able to get back into the swing of things? Petal really needs a good coach to take Bubba's place.

it's like riding a bike i'm sure......you haven't ridden since you were a kid, but you get on one today, pedal a little ways, and all of a sudden you have the hang of it again.......

Steve Buckley can if anyone can. The guy is sharp, very intelligent and a has a good heart for working with kids, plus he has the respect of the community. I think he will do fine.

I just hope some of the loud-mouths in the community have the same respect for him after we lose to Oak Grove next season. People need to have realistic expectations. A coach can't make the play on the field. Petal lost some very good players this year and next season will be one of rebuilding to win games - not championships.

Even though it will be on a non-division basis, it will be good to see Oak Grove and Petal playing each other again.
Certainly good from a financial standpoint as well as from a "metro" standpoint.
However, I wonder if Oak Grove will get as "hyped" for this game as in the past when the schools were longtime division rivals. I question this because it has been a while since the schools have played each other, and if you were to ask current Oak Grove students who their biggest rivals are, chances are the predominant responses would be "Hattiesburg" and "Meridian."
