I moved to the area in October from Virginia. Now that I'm settled in and have the holidays behind me I'm ready to meet some people and make some friends. I work from home so there's no chance of meeting people at the office. I'm hoping to get some good suggestions on where to go to meet people that are outgoing and not afraid to strike up a conversation.

Hi Red, welcome to the burg.

According to the Hub's Hot Picks, here's (http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007701040308) a few options.

Have you found a church home yet? If not, that's probably a great place to meet new friends.

Welcome!

You could always invite us to your house, then you could say you met people while at the office. :smt102

206 Front street has a very outgoing regular crowd. (an educated 20's to 60's sort of mix)
The atmosphere is quiet, so conversation flourishes.
Happy hour is 2 til 7, the food is excellent, the wait staff is superb, there's a balcony for smokers and Tom White owes me $20 for this plug.

Red,

Welcome! This is kind of weird, but I moved here one year ago last October, from VA, and work from my home as well. Where did you move from and what do you do?

Welcome, Red!

What you like to do, and we'll chime in and try to help - church, eat, arts, sports watching, golf, work-out, reading, what? Let us know, and you'll get an avalanche of ideas!

There's all kinds of churches around here - and some of them are nice place full of nice people. Good place to meet folks. There's some great volunteer opportunities - Christian Services can't be beat - and lots of area folks you'll work with there. There's arts/music/theatre kind of stuff at Southern Miss, William Carey, and several local associations. Call those places or watch the papers.

We have every "chain" eating place known to man, but we also have some "eating places" that are somewhat unique and dadgum good. Donnanelle's on Highway 49 South is a must - a lean-to roadhouse with great food, cold beer (or not if you prefer), and a chance you'll run into Lord knows who from Lord knows where there. There are others depending on your taste. We've got it all - from traditional "high grease" hamburger joints (Coney Island in downtown) to "semi-fine" dining at the Purple Parrot on Hardy Street.

There are good "craftsmen" here to fix your house, car, TV, or whatever needs fixing. But I would suggest you come on here and ASK first. There are lots of people in those businesses here!

And, if you will read the local newspaper or watch the local TV news, you will soon realize that we NEVER run out of real "you-could-make-this-stuff-up" entertainment and stuff to poke some fun at around here!

Brett Favre lives just West of town and if you get around enough, you'll see him driving down Hardy Street, eating at the same places we all do, or standing in line at the Post Office.

Of course, there are sports galore here - high school and two universities - and the Saints an hour or so away. We've got more golf courses "per capita" than any area in America, I'm quite sure!

Some pretty good bookstores and small art galleries - a decent Public Libary and two university libraries that are "community friendly."

You picked a good spot to "land," Red.

Welcome and hope 2007 is your best year ever!

Hi! I'll second Imapepper's remark, this place is addicting. Lipsofangel has been dreaming about people on the board! :) (See Thread About Nothing). If you have any questions about anything, you will find the answers here - they might not be the right ones, but we give it our all. Welcome anyway, this is a mighty nice place to live. :)

LOL! Don't scare the poor guy off, Astra! He'll figure things out for himself in due time! Red, just realize that there are a few of us that aren't from here either and we will help as much as we can! :)
