Wanna see what all the buzz is about Windows Vista? It's pretty cool.
Make sure to notice which football team is shown in the presentation.

Bill Gates was on the Today Show this morning talking about tomorrow's Windows Vista launch (http://video.msn.com/v/us/msnbc.htm?g=b5db07a2-d6e5-4b98-8a3b-3f6652565079&f=05&fg=rss).
Anyone here planning to upgrade their OS to Vista?

I like for an OS to be out there for a little while before I upgrade.
I'd rather let other people screw up their computers before I risk mine.

Besides, I don't have any software that requires Vista and probably won't for awhile, so there's really no point.

Yeah, I don't really see a good reason to upgrade. When I buy a new computer, I'll upgrade to Vista.

I mean really...Im just tired of seeing Microsoft use popular tools that have been around for long before Vista and make people thing that they discovered it and then capitalize on it...especially some of the GNU stuff like 3D desktop and widgets in GNOME....

I just like using the software. I'd hope that the OS is as transparent as possible. Windoze has always done stupid stuff, makes you jump through hoops sometimes, and wants to assume you're stupid and make stupid default choices for you. Maybe Vista won't do that, but I'm not betting on it.
I guess the thing I'm looking forward to with Vista, once I get the software and hardware, is using more than one processor/core to do some really processor intensive stuff.

Well, actually Kubuntu is the KDE version of Ubuntu. That's all you'll need if you like KDE. If you would rather go with Gnome, just download Ubuntu. It's two different flavors of the same thing.

It's not hugely different, but KDE just seems more user friendly to me. Of course, I haven't tried Gnome in a long time. Like I said though, you may want to go with Ubuntu (Gnome) because that's the version you'd be able to find a lot of information and help on.

Well, if you want KDE, then all you have to do is install Kubuntu, no Ubuntu needed. I wouldn't recommend switching between window managers, it's tough enough learning the ins and outs of one.

I'm out in San Diego this week. Not that that is all that important in itself, but I was joking with another guy here about installing Vista on our laptops, when our IT guy overheard us and had a cow, right there in the hallway. Was pretty impressive, especially after he realized we were pulling his chain.:smt038

Tom's Hardware wasn't overly impressed. (http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/01/29/xp-vs-vista/)
Your apps could actually run slower under Vista. If you like pretty, Vista may be for you. If you like speed and compatibility then you'd probably want to wait awhile.

i was rummaging around some stuff in my dad's office and found the perfect bumper sticker.
it was from PC Computing Magazine, circa 1985-1986----
original bumper sticker that reads "I *graphic of a heart* DOS"
i wish i knew someone that could re-produce it so i can put it on my car. i don't want to use the original and it get messed up.

OH wow, I first learned to use a PC using DOS 2.0. I had a computer in my office with a 40-meg hard drive. That was all the memory I could imagine ever needing.
The good thing about learning like that, though, was that it was easy to learn new software. I once inherited a little PC where hundreds of files were sitting in C:/ because the previous owner didn't know how to make directories.

hard drive? haha.......
My first computer had 128K of memory and no hard drive. My first hard drive was 512MG. My first modem was a 600 baud.
the first PC i played on was an AT&T 6300 with monochrome green graphics and AT&T monitor...........programed with basic with it, 2 5 1/4" floppies, a: being on the bottom.......
then the 10 meg hard card came in- $1200.....
it was my dads, and really wasn't supposed to even "touch" it, but he would let me play around as long as he was in the same room-
dad said that he bought it along with the NEC Pinwriter P5 widecarrage 24 pin printer for $8700 in new orleans when he was going to tulane. bought it on canal street actually- got the optional upgrade from 128k to 256k, and the salesman told him "why do you need 256k? you will never need that?!?"

MY first machine was a microlab 286, with dual floppies, 1 5 1/4 and 3 1/2 floppies, booted with DOS 3.1 on the 5 1/4, 1 meg of ram, 1 meg of video. only $4600, while his 386 that he just bought was a good $7500.
SoMissTV remembers, i think----BUT
we had a wang donated from FGH to our tech ed. class at rowan---i took the massive winchester maxtor HDD out of it, slammed it into the 286, and i beleve i had to get a controller card from his dad to run it---
called maxtor and it formatted down to a whole 60 megs---took 2 drive bays for this thing to mount. sounded like an aircraft taking off during spin up. loaded win 3.11 on it, and was in heaven. would get NASA photos from him and load them on my PC. Oh, the days!

The first modem that we had was for my dad to dial into USM's network. It had a cradle on the top where you put the handset from a standard Bell system telephone, as this modem was built right after AT&T was deregulated and most people did not yet have RJ11 jacks in their walls.

it's quite an easy fix.
anyone with any knowledge knows that a mac is a mac.
when a mac messes up, it's done.
if you have a PC, then all you do is kick it, run a dummy install CD, and keep going.
porn works better on a PC BTW- most of the movies are played with Windows Media Player. iTunes and quicktime don't like WMA......
just a small reminder also- microsoft owns the world.
