Hey, does anyone here like to fish? I'm still new to the area, and am looking for pointers on where to go, what to use, etc. Day trips are the best for now, but ideas for longer trips are good too.

I'm not all that big into fishing, but the ex use to go to Boga Homa Lake out 84 in Laurel ... Paul B State Park on 49 ... lol ... pick a steam or creek :) Just make sure your license is up to date ... from what I hear ... the Game Warden likes to sneek around in the woods :)

I am not much of a fisherman myself.

I would seek out Phil Defatta's column or Ben Willoughby. Depending on what type of fish you like. I hear Black Creek State Park is a fishing lake. Several state parks around. Jeff Davis Lake over in Prentiss.

The OUTDOOR Magazine in Hattiesburg American has a list of lots of places by type of fish.

Hey Brent, what kind of fishing do you like to do? My husband fishes salt water and fresh water. I've been floundering with him a couple of times on the coast and quickly found out I wasn't cut out to walk all night. My back and legs were hurting so bad the next day I couldn't hardly walk! :)

Fresh water, mostly. None of my kids are old enought yet for the kind of effort you were talking about. Bass, Crappie, etc...

We go to Turkey Fork (http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/mississippi/chickasawhay/recreation/turkey_fork/) a lot, and it's really nice out there. The only negative thing about it is the drive. We live in Petal and it's a 40-minute drive for us. It's a 240-acre lake stocked with catfish, bass, and bluegill.

Lake Perry (http://www.mdwfp.com/Level2/Fisheries/lake_detail.asp?ID=66) is a 20 minute drive from Petal. I've never fished there, but my husband has been a couple of times. He said it has everything from bass to bream.

Then of course there's Paul B. Johnson State Park (http://www.mdwfp.com/parkView/facilities.asp?ID=6846&facType=Fishing&Facility=Fishing). It's a 300-acre fresh water lake for fishing and water sports, well-stocked with bass, crappie, catfish, and bream.

Here's a link (http://www.mdwfp.com/Level2/Fisheries/lakes.asp) which shows all the State lakes.

I love to fish myself, I find it relaxing. I even live on a lake and can fish in my backyard but don't ever find the time. Needless, to say I have not been relaxed in awhile. ha ha

My Uncle Grady Cook had a sweet pond one mile down Elks Lake Road from Hwy 49 S. Mom lived on his land. All that subdivision on the left was his land. Mom's house is still there. The pond was behind her house. May be there still. I caught many a 5 lb bass and full stringers of bull bream. Other than that, I always fished Elks Lake.

Sounds like the perfect spot for you, Dollfus! Is the house and pond still there, you think? Does your family still own it? Dang, you'd practically be Hawkeye's "neighbor!"

I had forgotten Dr. Grady (my doctor until he died!) and Charlotte Cook were your aunt and uncle. My Mama and Leanord Farmer's Mama were Dr. Grady's nurses for many, many years. I had my tonsils out at the "South Mississippi Infirmary" - Dr. Grady's hospital next to Sacred Heart School.

I'll never forget a fishing trip I went on to South Louisiana with Dr. Grady, Dr. Tom Ross (veterinarian), and another guy who worked at Methodist Hospital (where I worked while I was finishing college at Southern). It was something!

Thanks for the memories, my friend!

Compared to North Mississippi, we have few good fishing holes. For some odd reason, seems all the water rec impoundments end up in the north part of state.

I sure wish the Sturgon lovers would take a leap and let the Bouie/Leaf project procede. I still believe there is a mega developer out there who could buy up all the property between Market Street and the river and turn it into high dollar, high scale real estate, which would put downtown back on the map.

You just about have to know someone with a good farm pond to find decent fishing around here anymore.
A friend with a farm pond is your best freshwater bet.
a Bream on a fly rod can be a blast.

Uncle Grady was cool. I hunted a lot with him. He had hunting dogs he kenneled in exchange for medical care. I don't know if the pond is there. Mom's old house is. It's a little two bedroom 9/10 mile from the traffic light on the left. No, Claire sold all that land after Aunt Charlotte passed away 1990. You know Dr. Paul Charbonneau is Uncle Grady's nephew too. He used to come out to Mom's and go to the pond and sight his hunting rifles.
Not many remember the Infirmary was there before South Mississippi Medical Clinic was. Remember Mr. Mixon, the maintence man for the Infirmary? Your mom would. I was saddened to see that Mrs. Farmer passed away a few weeks ago. We are the last of that era.
Heh heh heh. Yeah, when Uncle Grady retired I had to actually sit in a waiting room. Talk about shock! Before that, I was next.

Yep. I use ultra light for bream and love it. Everybody fly fishes up here. The mountain streams are full of trout. You can go behind MacDonalds in downtown Boone, NC with a kernel of corn and pull trout out of the stream.

I have a friend in Cherokee, he can litterally drop a line out of his office window for trout.
JI never figured out why noone around here fly fishes.
We've got great places in the sound for white & speckled trout.

Allright folks, May 2nd is full MOON, and that in the freshwater fishing world means bream and shellcracker galore. So if you want a few of these tasty critters to fry up, these next couple of weeks will be your best bet to catch some bigger than hand sized ones! As for you saltwater lovers out there, the big sow trouts have been biting well, if you can find some cleaner water around some shell flats you'll increase your odds at catchin' em'. The wind has sure made it tough on the coast here lately for us weekend warriors. Maybe mother nature will run out of breath this weekend and ease up a little. Tight lines and good times

Here's my idea of the perfect fishing trip: an attractive man in his mid-fifties to mid-sixties drives up in his very comfortable truck. I hop in with my sunhat, a good book, and a cooler full of Diet Pepsi and snacks. We find a lovely, quiet secluded spot and the gentleman proceeds to catch a whole BUNCH of bream and then cleans them. Meantime, I have enjoyed my book and a little nap. We go back to my mom's house, where she has her incredible coleslaw. hushpuppy batter, and a big pitcher of tea ready. A delicious time is had by all.
(Yes, I realize that this trip doesn't involve a lot of effort on my part, but that's because it's my fantasy. And yes, I can bait my own hook but did you see me fishing anywhere in there? That's the attractive gentleman's job. ;))

Give a man a fish & he'll eat for a day.
Teach a man to fish & he'll sit in a boat all day drinkin' beer.

My oldest daughter, 8, has caught over 1000 bream so far this year. We've got a 30 acre lake behind the house. I had a friend catch 78 white perch a couple of weeks ago too but they're just starting to bite good. The late cold snap slowed them down a bit.

Thinkin' bout' hittin' the Leaf this weekend maybe float from Sims bridge down to Mahned. There is a good bend a few hours south down there that has some excellent cat's in it. Last year I took my son down through there. It was the first time down that stretch for the both of us. We stopped for about 45 minutes in that bend and it was non-stop action with dead shrimp on the bottom. It actually amazed me that we practically filled the 36 quart ice chest that quick. We even caught tabbies on dead shrimp.....Coulda caught more but didn't have anywhere to put em'!!! The fish were nice and fat, I believe it was a little earlier last year though, around the beginning of april. It's not that often that I can go and catch tabbies, blues, and channels in the same spot. Maybe this go around will be the same.
Well, if I get to go I'll post a report. Till next time-

Fish, I bet your whaler has teak wood instead of mahogony. Teak is a very durable wood that will survive in all elements.:smt023

It's probably teak, but in it's 24 years of exposure it has rotted and won't hold up my big butt anymore...got some mohogany for free, it's 5/4 stuff, all I gotta do is rip it, plane in a tad, throw on a coat of sealer and I am back in business......try buyin' teakwood.......$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I shoulda' said replace the teak with mahogony, sorry bout that.

Dearest Ferum Fisherman,

Last week, RevranAL caught a fine bigmouth wallhanger at a farm pond up in Clinton, slow rollin' a spinnerbait. Went back the next mornin' at daylight when the water was slick as owlpoop and blistered a buzzbait across the top, with not even a hit. That Big un's tail was part gone from fannin' the bed, so a few days later, RevAL got a chance to go back and slow rolled a spinnerbait near the bank and caught a nice 5 pounder right up in midday. Its tail was worn as well from fannin' the bed. So try slow rollin' a spinnerbait, jig or worm along them banks cause this big uns up here are still on the bed.....
Not sure about the big lakes, ol RevAL won't have time to fish the Reservoir til the first part of June...Not sure about them Marshes or Fourchon/Grand Isle for Reds and Specks, as ol RevAL has been in Jackson almost every day since the first of the year....Well Good Luck...

Well, got the teak replaced with mahogany, looks good too! After a couple of hours of planin' and cuttin' and screwin' (with a drill motor and screws)-(not the $e#ual kind, although it would be nice) the seats are back in the whaler and I am bound for the Mississippi Sound. Takin' the five year old for his first trip to Round Island with the boys! I can hardly wait, it's been a long time comin' for he and I and I hope Mother Nature is sort of nice to us. Hopin' for some Flatsides and a few specks, but if we don't catch nothin' but pinfish and hardheads it'll be a party!

Anyone on here fish the oil rigs south of horn island? That is usually where I go but my boat is sick right now. Hope to have it going before June. I don`t fish Louisiana becase of the high rates they charge us for fishing in the waters that should have belonged to Mississippi. They took half of our fishing water.

I've tried all the state parks in the area,Little black,Paul B. johnson, bogue Homa and lake walthall and no luck what so ever I've tried about everything to find some good fishing especially a good place stocked with catfish for the wife.I go for the sun and to relax but I'm somewhat discouraged in our lakes.I'lll try lake barnett in MIze on Mom's day maybe do some camping.Anyone have any suggestions the Burg and the surroundings have changed the fishing.

A few friends from New Augusta went out that way last Sunday and limited out on Red Snapper. I think they were fishing the triple rigs.
