Does anyone know the history behind the DC-3 / C-47 that is across the street from the Petal Library? Some visitors asked and I didn't have a clue.

This (http://www.ruudleeuw.com/deepsouth.htm) may help. Scroll down to about the 9th picture, and it begins talking about it in the paragraph stating, "We felt compelled to move west and search for propliners in Mississippi."

Mr. Hamilton who owned the hardware store there had the planes moved in and was going to open it up to the public but didn,t live to get it done.

I went with E.O.D. about 2 years ago to remove the still armed ejection seat boosters from the jet that was there. That was the first time I was able to look at those aircraft up close.

Those planes have been there for many years...I can remember planes being there when I was a small child...and I am in my mid 50's now. We lived across the street from there for a short period of time.

I think there used to be a third one there. It looked more like a fighter jet that was on a aircraft. If I remembered right it had the wings folded part way. I think it was white and orange/red

politically incorrect

LOL. That plane has been there just about all of my life. All that time, some unsuspecting person could have sat down and shot himself out of the plane? That would have been quite a ride!:)

So what do you guys think? Will the plane sit there til it rots out completely? Will someone eventually do something with it. Will it be used to get the administration to DC next week (I certainly hope not)? Will it be confiscated by the Chinese in their quest for world domination? What do you think the future holds for our dear little relic?

i hear johnny dupree was going to go over there with the rev and magee-

magee was going to make sure it wasn't racist, the rev was going to bless it, and johnny was going to take it to DC

and wynn was going to give it a police escort, but i heard that petal likes to arrest crime makers, thieves, and idiots.

I think that within the next year Petal will pass a ordinance against airplanes parked in your front yard and it will have to magically disappear or face a stiff fine from that code enforcement dude.

You really had me laughing with that one! :) Actually there were several houses in that area...my mom and dad rented one from a Mr. Myers. He lived in the area and grew and hyberdized (sp) the most beautiful camellias anyone would ever want to see! Mr. Myers sons lived behind him in a couple of houses and the Myricks lived in the area too. The Myricks son, John used to be the manager for the city busses back in the early 70's..there sure wasn't alot in the area at the time, a few houses and some large lots that housed cattle and horses. that is for sure...seemed like it took forever to get over there from the Burg.

Actually my mom and dad rented a duplex for a short period of time from a Mr. Myers...can't remember his first name...he worked on the Southern RR with my dad. Mr. Myers grew and hyberdized (sp) the most beautiful camellias that could be found. He had hundreds at one time. The camellias was his hobby to relax.

I think Mr. Myers owned several acres in that area at one time...he then sub-divided it and gave lots to his children and they built houses there. I know there was a Mr. Myrick who lived next door too...his son John was manager of the city busses back in the early 70's just prior to and right after the city took the bus company over from a private company.

I don't remember much else in that area, the airplane man and a few scattered houses and the electric co. office down the street...there was alot of large pastures with both horses and cows. At that time Petal was just a small community, maybe town status but certainly not a city. I can remember it seemed to take forever to get over there from the Burg.

i think most of the citizens of petal feel pretty strongly about the protection of our airplanes. most of us grew up driving past them on sunday afternoons. it's a good memory for everyone.

I wish they still had the train at kamper park. nothing like playing on that old engine and the war machines. Those were great times, and I'm sorry that my son won't have the opprotunity to play on those, especially since he's so fond of trains. he'd love it if he could actually climb into the cab and pretend to drive the train.

I think the administration knows how much we love those planes, and although they've stepped on toes for the greater good, I would hope they'd recognize what the planes represent to those who call Petal home.

i totally forgot about the train and the tank!! the bad thing about them tho was that they were always filled with sand...which may have been the deciding factor on getting rid of them....especially since the paint wouldn't stay on them and kept rusting......

i remember getting into the tank and turning all the switches and knobs and handles.......great times!!

does anyone remember the "rocket ship" slide that they had? i remember it was a big deal when they put it up.....and it was HUGE!!!

I'll take the blame on that one. The train engine was used at Hercules before it was brought to Kamper Park. While I was playing on it one afternoon, my father saw some fibrous material sticking out from under the boiler. Turns out the entire insulation system for the boiler was asbestos. The train was removed from the park shortly thereafter. The train now sits behind the train station downtown behind a fence.

LOL

I wondered why it was gone, and now I know. I thought it might have been because of some lawsuit or lawsuit potential.

I grew up on W. 8th Ave as well. I can remember when where the Civic Center is now, was just and open field that had horses and the three airplanes in it. I used to walk over there after school and feed the horses behind City Hall.

Maggie Doodle, we bought a duplex and remodeled it into a house in 1991, it's on W. 9th ave, do you think perhaps it was the same one that you grew up in?

Geez, I am not sure...I am not real familiar with the streets over there..the house we lived in faced the Main St. It has long since been torn down. The only people I knew who were there were the Myricks and the Myers...my mom and dad rented from Mr. Myers. He had hundreds of the most beautiful camillia bushes all over his big yard. His sons lived behind him, but for the life of me I can't remember their names.

Hey folks ask some of the older folks in Petal. Hamilton that owns the
plane was a member of the Klu Klux Klan. He was a part of an investigation into incidents occuring but was never arrested. This was
probably somewhere in the 60's. Maybe he was planning on bombing someone ?

don't know about the "bombing some1", but i'm glad some1 else came out with it that Hamilton was a member of the KKK. i think i had mentioned it before in another thread some time back, but i don't think any1 ever confirmed it. as a matter of fact, one of his KKK "uniforms" was sent to Morris Deas at the place in Alabama (So. Alabama Poverty Law Center ??? or some name similar). thanks, whodo... :smt038
