My kitchen cabinets are dark and dated. Talked to the painter and he says they're not worth the cost of repainting, but suggested I have new doors made for them. They also need new drawers built, as the existing ones are plastic. I may decide to sell this house (too big for me) so don't want to sink a bundle into this. Anybody had this done? Cost as compared to new cabinets? Who did you use?

I can find out but I got my drawers and cabinets from a guy in Laurel.
There is a guy here is Petal that does an awesome job as well. Ash Millworks I think is the name. My parents used them and he did a great job. He has a showroom as well.

depending on the actual condition, i would paint them, especially if you are going to sell the house. most painters hate painting cabinets because of the crevices found in cabinet work.
one way to go would be just to purchase new cabinets at lowes. the pre-made ones, not a custom kitchen.
there is also 2 things that you could do to them that may be more cost effective:
1) use contact paper. if you sand them just a little, and patient, they will turn out just fine.
2) buy the laminate yourself. all you need is an old t-shirt and an iron.
i personally wouldn't worry about all new doors and drawers. unless the drawers, which are made of plastic, are cheezy and falling apart. you may be able to find a good carpenter who would be willing to build some drawers. i have started to build a few drawers for mine, but it's starting to get really time consuming for me at least, but i'm doing dove tails instead of just butts and brads at the corners

I should add that I'm not able personally to remove, install, or paint. This will all have to be hired.

Hermione, Ash Millworks does beautiful work but are rather expensive and have a continuous backlog...You can go to Lowe's and get the doors replaced and the cost is not that bad. We re-did our kitchen a few years ago and that is where we got our cabinets and they are beautiful...and VERY well built...we got semi-custom made cabinets and not just stock cabinets..however I will p.m. you with a local contractor who does beautiful work and doesn't seem to be overly expensive...he recently built bookcases and a new kitchen for my neigbhor and both are beautiful..he stained them and they are gorgeous...he is an excellent builder..She got him shortly after Katrina and he has worked for months on her house...almost to the point of totally rebuilding it...I would give him a call.
ANY money you spend on a kitchen and/or bath will come back to you if you sell..people want updated kitchens and baths when they are looking at house...it will be money well spent.

Worth a trip to Lowe's Hermione and have someone help you with your decision. That costs absolutely zero.

Bring pictures with you if you go to Lowes and measure the doors you are looking to replace. They can direct you to the best decision.

Hermoine, IF you go to Lowe's for the cabinets they do have sales associates who specialize in cabinents...they will come to your house and make all the measurements for you...their installation people also do a good job..my salesman worked for a couple of weeks on the computer trying to get something I both liked and could get the most use of space. He was very inventive and added things I would never have thought about.
