View Full Version : Really Bad Service

Yesterday my family and I went to Barnhills. Haven't been there in quite awhile so we thought we would give it a shot again. After paying for our meals we found a table. I then waited almost 15 to 20 min for someone to come and take our drink order to bring us our drinks. Then at one point while my wife was up getting some food from the buffet one of the workers there basically yelled at her because she was taking food from a container that they hadn't yet place into the buffet (although the person yelling could have done this). Now after we had finally gotten our drinks and were eating and talking, no one and I mean no one came by to clear out our used plates, no one asked if we needed a refill of our drinks. I finally called over a waiter from another area of the restaurant to see if he could get us some refills. He did this plus took our used dishes to the back with him. He kept apologizing since he didn't know who our waiter/waitress was or why they weren't helping us. This one waiter named Josh (if you do go to Barnhills ask for him to be your waiter) even though he had his own areas he had to cover kept coming by to make sure we didn't need anything else. Once we were finished I went and found him and personally handed him the tip telling him that I wanted to make sure it got to the right person.
Other than that one waiter I would not recommend anyone ever going to Barnhills again. The service from everyone else was very poor. I was completely disappointed in the food, and most of the other employees were rude and acted like they didn't want to be there.
Have you ever had this happen to you in a restaurant here???

Yes...Barnhills is a real disappointment the last couple of years. We used to go there all the time but it was slowly declining in quality. Now I avoid that place like the plaque

if you want real southern cooking...go over to mom and dads in petal
no..the buffet isnt as big and there isnt as big a selection...but youll get your drinks as soon as you sit down and those people are nice and fast in ways youll never get at a chain restaurant
plus the food is better than your grandmother can cook

Sackett, I went there too. Strange isn't it? :) I have not been there in a couple of years but I was highly disappointed in the food quality, service and have decided that I won't be going back.

I have been disappointed with that place and got sick a couple of times after eating there.
I ate lunch 1 time at Nanny's down town for lunch and liked it.
I miss Morrison's and ate at Picadilly's in Metarie over the Christmas Holidays and loved it.:smt038

I've never been a fan of buffets. I know at any resturant that things go on in the kitchen... but it grosses me out at buffets to see people serving themselves knowing most haven't washed their hands. YUCK!
I haven't had any real bad service lately. I usually eat at Crescent City the most... it's hit or miss with their service. Last night my "salad" was about a cup full of shredded cheese and maybe 3 bites of lettuce. I wasn't too pleased about that. When I pointed it out to the waitress, all the did was say "oh- sorry" but not even in an apologetic tone. I am VERY picky about customer service... and when I'm not happy, I point it out... not to be rude, but so that management will be made aware of it and hopefully fix the problem. If I owned a place and my service was awful, I would want to knwo about it so I coulf fix it!
. . . . mom and dads in petal . . . . That's on the east side of South Main, just past the American Legion, correct?
If it's the place I'm thinking about, Bill Durhams daughter had a cafe there some years back.

No, it's on the other end of Petal... coming in to Petal on Hwy 42, it's on your right, across the highway from the Chevron station. It's a white building and there's a car lot to the right of it.
Ah!!
OK.
I've eaten there a couple of times.
Yeah, It's good and really nice folks.

I'm with you Sackett22 , Barnhills wasn't that good the first time we ate there, but anyone can have a bad day, tried again, but the second time was no better. Two strikes and your out. Best buffet (other than the casinos) that I've found is Golden Correl, but none of these in the Hattiesburg area.

I don't like buffets either, but it's more really thinking about how long the food has been sitting there that does it for me...however, I do have issues with other people and their food, or even myself. I can do dishes while I'm cooking: the pots, the pans, the bowls, the utensils. But I have a really hard time with the plates and utensils AFTER people (including myself) have eaten off or with them. One of my personality quirks. :smt102

We stopped going there a long time ago. We got tired of stepping over the eaten chicken legs that were dropped on the floor.
My mother has never gotten the name of that restaurant right. She always calls it Barnyards.

Oh, when I had a dishwasher, I put the dishes into the dishwasher as they were used, and then only did a load when it was full. Considering that I lived by myself, that could take a week or so. Now I have a dish drainer on one side of the sink, and one of those scrubber things filled with soap. As I use a dish, I use the scrubber thing and put the clean dish in the drainer. Easy as could be. But it still grosses me out.

I honestly didn't notice a difference between Ryan's and Fire Mountain. Most of the food looked exactly the same. It looked to me like they changed the name, redecorated a little, and that was about it.
Someone asked why Barnhills had not been closed by the health dept., yes they had to close last year due to the condition of the kitchen and things that were left out. As far as Fire Mtn. they are just as bad! I would NEVER step foot in there!!!!!!!!

Nanny's over on Edwards St. has a good food...it is cooked daily and everything in there, including the workers are clean as can be. We ate there alot when I was at the p.d. It was one of the few places I could get to on my lunch hour without being late...the price is good too. The best part is even the food is served by their employees and didn't have everybody in the world digging in it..They give more then enuf in a serving. They also make you feel welcome when you walk in the door. The only bad part is they are only open during the week and during daytime hours. They have some of the best fried chicken and yeast rolls you ever want to put in your mouth!

I know a person who worked on the Ryan's/Fire Mountain remodel. OMG the stories about the nasty kitchen would make you sick.
For example: There was a leaky air vent that dripped right next to big service containers filled with hamburger meat. The containers were propped so that the drainage from the meat could drip from the container, off a counter, and down a drain in the floor. :smt118 He said the smell was horrible but the visual was brain numbing.
I will NEVER eat there.

I WISH I had read this post earlier this afternoon. Being new in town we've been trying new places to eat and our choice tonight was Fire Mtn. BAD IDEA! We will not be going there again. I'm going to miss Golden Corral and Furr's. Furr's isn't a serve yourself buffet it's cafeteria-style so you don't have to worry about everyone else touching the food. Unfortunately, the closest one is Texas  or Florida.:smt022

The worst for me was when I was eating at Panino's (can't remember if I've told this on here before...). I bit in to some eggplant and felt somethgin REALLY hard. I felt rude, but I spit it out... and it was a screw! When I told the waitor he said "oops, they're working on the AC back there. Guess it fell in." He didn't even send the manager out to apologize. I called them the next day and the manager said he would send me a voucher for a free meal (not that I ever want to eat there again)... yeah, well, he never mailed it. Considering the amoung I could have sued for had I accidently swallowed it, the manager should have paid every dime of our entire group and given us a voucher to come back again for free. He better thank his lucky stars that I was in good mood that night.

Tea's one of those potentially dangerous foods that you wouldn't really think about. Time abuse and lack of sanitation can create a dangerous situation. I don't drink tea, but I'd be wary about drinking it from a low volume place that couldn't possibly use the urn they have in 4 hours.

I tell you what I find amusing, is the places who display out of date health permits. Chili's, at last glance, still had one up from a few years ago. Those things make me wonder.

I can't believe these places failed so many times. Copelands, wow. I can't believe I Pomodori failed. McDonald's in Walmart I can believe. I can't believe that any of the McDonald's failed, what with their crackerjack all-management atmosphere and dedication to freshness.

Wasn't this posted here a few months ago? I remember reading these and it had to be a link someone put up here.

:smt102

Wow, this is exactly how I feel. I thought I was alone in the "I can't stand buffets" feeling, but then to read that someone else hates plates/utensils after they have been eaten off of too. If you ask my mom she says I'm weird about this, but it just looks bad to me.

It's really all about the saliva for me. I can't stand to hear people chewing gum...listening to the liquid in their mouths move around. :smt078 When I was just a small fuzz, I did in fact puke all over the hall at school because Jerry Ewing wouldn't stop smacking his gum in my ear. I warned him; he didn't believe me. Stupid boy.

yeah, it drives me nuts to have to watch movies or tv shows that show people eating. It's disgusting... I can't stand the sound! Or hearing people in the movie theatre smacking on popcorn...

I'm not sure if a class in food safety would elevate or alleviate your fears over utensils. I look around for food safety and if I notice things out of place, I'll back out. Sanitation is pretty easy, and it's pretty easy to sanitize utensils after use.
I remember in my serv-safe class a few years ago, the instructor was telling about a restaurant that didn't have an ice machine that would make enough ice to last through the busy Friday crowd, so they'd take all the drinks and pour them through a strainer in the sink and rinse off the ice and re-use it. Now, THAT one will give you nightmares. I'm sure hawkeye could tell some stories, as the instructor was a cook at his place.

If you click on the restaurant name, you can see what the actual complaint was made by the Inspector.
I clicked on Barnhill's, and this was just one of about 10 complaints I saw:
Date of complaint: 12/13/2006
About one week ago I visited this location and took a plate off the rack (many times I have to replace them as they are dirty with food on them..)..on doing so there were at least 100 roaches (small ones)..the manager removed both stacks of plates which had more roaches...If you walk in (without announcing you are coming) and walk back to the back entrance inside the store, where the employees go to get your drinks...you will be hit with a horrible stink....like rotting stuff....I have witnessed other food handling procedures which are NOT hygenic..I have also called and left this information with your receptionist and want a report on what was found and what steps are being taken to have them handle food in a proper manner..Thanks (The people are nice..their methods and cleanliness if HORRIBLE)"

FYI re: Mexican Kitchen - I ran into Mr. Garcia (owner of the Kitchen) about two weeks ago. He said his daughter is trying to get up and running with the family business in a new location.
Lone Star Girl will need to give it a try - It's as close to Tex-Mex as you can find around these parts - since it closed, I've not eaten Mexican.
He added that lack of available employees - wait staff, etc. - was the sole reason for closing.........................how sad when folks complain of no work available.

Thanks, I had heard the same too... just been waiting patiently for it to possible open again. Luckily I got the recipe for the sauce and finally can get it to taste exactly like theirs! Oh, that stuff is so good!

Not going to name the place but its next to Arby's on H 49 north and its a hamburger place..
Pulled up to drive thru this afternoon and waited a few minutes and a guy comes on the speaker and says "We can not take your order today because we are shorthanded sorry" I went there about a month ago and they told me over the speaker.. "We are closed for a few hours" middle of the day....That place has gone down the tubes...
