Okay, I've got a question for those who may know: What's that Whooshing noise???

What whooshing noise, you may ask? Well, in the city of Petal, at various times during the day, outside, you can hear a loud whooshing noise that lasts about a minute. Last night, around 2am, it sounded like someone'd parked a jet outside my front door, and was revving the engines.

I'm pretty sure it comes from the chemical plant, and the night air helped carry the sound, but you can hear it during the day, too. I'd like to know what is specifically happening at where ever is causing the noise when it happens. Are they venting a tank? Filling something up? Letting the devil we keep locked up cut the cheese? What's going on???

Funny, I have a whooshing noise in my left ear I have to go back to the doctor about. Driving me nuts.

I'm not 100% sure but I'm sure it's probably one of the gas plants releasing pressure from a bleed-off valve or something. I've heard it before and just chalked it up to that.

I can't imagine how loud it is at the site. It was Katrina loud last night. That's the best way to describe the sound I heard last night. I opened my door and it sounded like the gates of Hell were open and all the demons were rushing out. I live about 2-3 miles as the crow flies from the site.

Could be UFOs circling overhead!

LoL! You joke ... We thought the very same thing ...

CB ... we heard the same noise a night or so ago over here in Oak Grove ... it completely freaked the two big girls out ... it lasted *way* longer than a couple of minutes though :smt102 We didn't know what it was and shrugged it off after it stopped. Creepy ... Kinda like the clouds in the sky yesterday ... that looked like UFO's were landing on the clouds. :smt118 :smt103

I know exactly what you are talking about in Oak Grove. We heard it around 9:15 and it lasted about 4 min.

It's Wonder Woman in her Invisible Jet (http://img.engadget.com/common/images/3611739073994828.JPG?0.7448574414640283). She heard Noway was MIA.

we were outside long enough to smoke a cigarette (sp) and that was after a few minutes standing at the oldest's window looking at each other crazy ... *shrug* ... we are in a relatively flat, central spot ... ours may have lasted so long from an echo ... maybe?

The cloud stuff was covered on WDAM by Nick Ortego and it showed a few pictures. He said a dozen or more were sent in. Something about ice crystals forming and dropping baecause of their heaviness and creating a blue spot.

I am sure it could be looked up on WDAM.

it could also be the sound of air being sucked in from wynn leaving town...

or all the police officers running away.....

We ALL could live a million years and we couldn't be so lucky that Wynn would up and leave town..not permanently anyway....
God forbid anymore officers leaving...we won't have any left if they do!

Is it the sound of the Mayor's mullett flapping in the wind? Maybe it's the sound of him polishing his white sneakers. Or it could be that deep breath he took right before he had to apologize to those firemen.
Really, in all likelihood, it was the sound of the Petal residents' tax money leaving their pockets because a new charge was assessed to them by the city for something useless.

Maybe it was a bunch of whining babies complaining about taxes and services. People wanting their cake and eating it too.

Petal needs some improvement. Looks like they've had some zoning issues in the past and the town has suffered but the way to do that doesn't always have to include a fee or tax to the residents. Once taxes go up, they don't go back down too often.
Not trying to argue with you, just saying....by the way, I don't whine.

They are releasing some pressure at the gas plant.I use to hear it all the time.Sometimes you'll see them burning off some gas as well.

That explains the noises heard in Petal ... anyone know what the same noises were in Oak Grove??? We don't have a chemical or gas plant here that I am aware of ... :smt102

i can still remember when that gas plant exploded..and they had to evacuate petal...they used a helicopter to tell people thru a pa system...anyone remember what year that was?

Conveyor Belt

which time??? I remember it exploding about 15-20 years ago. Then, about 5-10 years later, that tanker car exploded on the tracks outside the plant.

Maggie-Doodle

I think the first explosion was back in mid to late 70's...my cousin had a house over by Green's Creek Church...they suffered alot of damage due to the blast....

That's the explanation I've gotten several times.:)

Now - I've kinda wondered - Why is there excess natural gas to vent and burn off? Seems like a waste to me. I'm sure we'd all like to use it for heating and cooking.:smt102

Ummmmm . . . . . early to mid 1970s. I don't recall precisely. I moved to H'burg in '73 and it was shortly afterwards.

A bunch of tanker railcars exploded and burned in Laurel a few years before that incident. I was still a student at USM, visiting my parents in Laurel, so that was late 1960s - '68 to '70.

I was either 10974 or 1975. I spent the night with a friend & she lived on N. 19th in Hattiesburg. The whole house shook & one of the windows cracked. Her mother was sleeping in the den & she came into the bedroom to check on us. We thought that something had blown up at Hercules.

:)heh heh heh
Well, that could explain the horrific smell over here in the Bay Street area last night (Saturday Night) when I got back from the laundromat in Petal.:smt119
What was that?
It was like the sewage lagoons blew up or something.
WhooWhee!!

kevin
02-05-2007, 03:56 PM
Even though I can imagine 58's farts to be lethal I believe what your smelling is the sewer backing up due to heavy rains and the lines being worked on in the area.It smells like shi7 because it basically is.

Ted

I think you're correct, Kevin.:)
When I left for work this morning there was an orange cone sitting on the manhole under the traffic light at Bay and Southern.

Now - back to the original topic:
I ask around at work about the whooshing noise and was told the the Eaton Plant vents steam from time to time.
That could be a possible source of the noise.
