So, I finally got my laptop in, and now have my desktop, which has a majority of my files on it, and my laptop. The desktop is wired to the internet, and the laptop is wireless. I'm trying to share files between the desktop and laptop and share the printer attached to the desktop with the laptop. I've googled things until I'm blue and keep finding conflicting information.
I've set the files I want to share on the desktop to share mode. I've named the laptop and desktop and named them in the same workgroup. I can see the laptop from the desktop, but can't see the desktop from the laptop.
The desktop is running XP home and the laptop is running XP pro.

check your windows firewall. i know that windows won't share between a wired/wireless or wireless/wireless if there is not a "secure" network.
you have security enabled on the router?

I don't think this is the case. I share files on my wireless/wired network all the time and don't have it secured. Although I don't really have a solution to this right now, I set up a network maybe once per year. I'm sure someone will be along with solutions though.

Make sure if you have a 2nd party firewall installed you have it set to allow the IP addresses of each computer. (Ex the firewall on your laptop must allow your desktop IP and the firewall on your desktop should allow laptop's IP)

I have McAfee installed on the desktop and Windows Live on the laptop... I might go ahead and ditch the McAfee and put the Windows Live on the desktop just to see if that'll help...
I can't find how to configure the mcafee, but I can see the laptop on the network map.
I'm having a time getting the laptop to see the desktop. I can see the laptop on the 'view computers in workgroup' from the desktop, but when trying it on the laptop, I get a 'you do not have permission to access this workgroup, or some similarly worded error.
Any help on those???

In your local area connection properties, do you have "file and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks" installed?

right click your C drive and make sure you turn the sharing on for it
just because you can see the machine on your network doesnt mean that machine is configured to allow outside sources to have access

The way I did mine:
1. I first changed the workgroup on each machine to be the same.
2. Then I ran the network wizard on each machine, ignoring any hardware.
3. Reboot each machine
4. Disable Macafee, Norton, and windows firewall on both.
5. Create a share on one machine
6. Look for the share in "My network Places" on the other machine
