I witnessed two wrecks in the same location on Hwy 42 in the span of two days. This is on top of the fatality that happened outside the city limits the other day. There seems to be a wreck at least once a week on the stretch of the highway from Wal-Mart to Trailwood. People don't pay attention and go too fast. I see people pull out in front of traffic, slam on breaks, drive around other cars who are stopped waiting to turn, etc.

The Petal PD needs to sit a traffic officer out on 42 every day on a regular basis so that people get used to seeing him there. Maybe that will slow people down and make them pay better attention to all of the stops and starts going on. The road has too many businesses and subdivisions for people to drive like they do. You have to expect that cars in front of you will be stopping to turn.

The teenagers are especially bad. They drive like bats out of hell.

your absoulutely right. I know that there was talk once that the Trailwood West entrance would be moved in front of the Petal Elementary entrance and they would be putting a light up. I have not heard anything else about it at all. It is really dangerous and the traffic is just awful. I hate it.
They need a caution light at sunrise and macedonia as well.
Maybe tully or james moore will know more about this.
I was told about the light about a year or so ago.

I believe the plans for the new elementary school call for a light at Herrington Road. It is in front of that bank and the new General Store that the two wrecks happened. But, you are right, lights are also needed in several other spots. My worry is that people will just run the lights because they don't watch what they are doing.

Maybe since out 42 here is part of the city the officers can patrol more out here than on three mile cut off... there is so much going on that road now you couldn't speed if you wanted to.
The traffic out 42 has been an issue for awhile now. I wanted to live on this side of town, but I could do w/out the traffic in the am or afterwork.
I will have to ask around about the light at the elementary and Trailwood West. I hope they will do install one there, it would help out tons!

once the egp is finished, you may see some relief through town, but high school traffic will still be a problem. lights at herrington and hillcrest loop would help greatly.

I was told today it would be a subway and on the other side would be a coffee shop!

They need to put a red light up at Herrington Rd. BADLY. I know they looked at Hillcrest a while back and they said there wasn't enough traffic to put a red light.

I think if they would just add another lane on the stretch going from Petal to Perry Co. it would help the high school traffic tremendously. Start the extra lane about where the church that got demolished is and make the inside lane for high school people only. That might stop some of the congestion for the people who aren't going to the high school or elementary school.

That must be where Mike Napper's new Alfa office is going to be located. Mike is the former Petal School District Police Officer and a heckuva nice guy.

I sure couldn't agree more about a red light needed at Herrington.

The other day I was sitting at Herrington & 42 waiting to make a left turn onto 42. Traffic opened up so I could make a safe turn. To my complete surprise upon completing the turn I had a guy inches off my bumper. Who was it ? It was the person who had been behind me at the stop sign ! Apparently he didn't even stop at the stop sign and went when I did ! In many years of driving I've never almost been rear ended after leaving a stop sign. I think he knew he made a mistake because even though I was doing the speed limit he fell further and further behind me (holding up traffic).

I see police all over Petal (in some cases "hiding") looking for those traffic offenders. Seems to me , just a police presence from Wal-Mart to Sunrise might slow some people down AND raise more money for the city.

Someone is going to get hurt bad here if something isn't done soon.

Something has to be done. I have to drive through Petal on my way to work every day. Not to mention the fact that I grew up in Petal. The place they really need a light, which nobody has mentioned, is at the Corinth Rd./42 intersection. This will become necessary mainly because of the Gandy Speedway, but it has been needed for years. I agree with the caution light at Macedonia/Sunrise. Someone is gonna get killed there sooner or later.
