There is a whisper of a rumor that an explosive device confiscated from the middle school can anyone verify?

I heard there was a bomb type thing found there. All I know is that they detonated it behind the high school and elementary school today and it basically shook the schools. It sounded like Camp Shelby was behind the schools

i just heard the same thing from my son, who's a Senior at PHS. he said that supposedly a Middle School student had a pipe bomb, and "they" (don't know who "they" is) found it, and took it out behind PHS today and detonated it and that it shook the whole school.

i have been watching wdam's 6:00 news, thinking SURELY it would be a news item. still haven't heard anything.

i will be calling the superintendent's office tomorrow to see what they have to say. i would hope that the "powers that be" in Petal don't attempt to try to sweep this under a rug. they REALLY don't want to see me and MANY MANY other parents get upset... :smt013

if this is really true, it is REALLY SCARY!

I'm no explosives expert, but why did they detonate it behind the school? Was it not possible to take it to a more discreet location? Just wondering.

When I said "behind the school", I didn't mean like 10 yards from it. There is a lot of open space behind the school. I'm not for sure if it was a bomb or what, but whatever it was, was loud

Despite popular belief, I'm not a total dumbass, tommy. I didn't think they sploded it on the playground, but couldn't they have taken it to Camp Shelby or somewhere in which there would be NO chance that a kid would be hit by shrapnel or deafened by or concussioned by the bomb?

From what I heard that the “bang” shook the windows of the High School. The students were told that “they?” were doing seismic testing on the ground that they are developing behind the high school. If this is true then a company would be involved and records kept of the test. If this is not true then one of the law enforcement officers on here may be able to answer this.

If an unknown IED is found , what is the protocol for disposal and what bureaus are to be notified?
Second question was this done?

Surely, the crack news team at WDAM (on your side) would have known about such a discovery. There has to be a more reasonable explanation. Are we sure some pothead HS student isn't just running his mouth about something he doesn't know about?

All of you parents who have kids there can stop worrying.

Camp Shelby's EOD Emergency Response unit was in charge of "a demonstration" at the school today, so it's not a bomb that was found in the school or anything.

Why was the test behind the school???? Why was there no notification to the public???? Who approved this test while school was in session???? Were any parents notified???? What is your source?

Listen here, Eric, I’m pop’s source of info. Yeah one of the “pothead” high school students. You weren’t sitting in class when it happened. You didn’t feel the vibrations and hear the windows shake. excuse me.

I have yet to be proved wrong there has been more than one explanation from several people. As I stated there are questions to be answered and no one here is capable of giving an official explanation and that will be questioned because several thing do not add up.

No notification to any one.
An explosion demonstration at a school by Camp Shelby?
explosion large enough to shake windows.
kids told seismic testing?
After columbine, 911 and all the other incident Kids in school have every right to be scared of big bangs.
Something irresponsible at the least has happened.
In my original post I asked if it could be verified and got at least three answers and stories.
I am so sorry that I let some one "who was there" express themself it won't happen again.

sorry, ES, u are wrong. I ALSO took some of your posts "personally". i was simply stating what my son told me what he was told about the situation. i didn't say he KNEW FIRST-HAND that this was what had happened. this was all i knew of the situation when i came on MH earlier this evening when i read the other posts that other people had heard similar things as my son had. some of ur comments to Pop especially were really, IMO, "cheap shots", and really uncalled for.

hopefully it ISN'T true that someone in middle school was found to have brought a pipe bomb to school, but i think that calling and speaking with the Superintendent over Petal Schools SHOULD be a good place to try to get to the TRUTH -- WHATEVER it may be, don't u??

and, i meant what i said about me being one UPSET parent IF the story was true and IF the "powers-that-be" tried to sweep it under the rug!!

on the other hand, if it turns out that Camp Shelby was putting on a demonstration for some students at Petal Schools (which really makes no sense for the students IN the schools not being advised BEFORE the "Big Boom"), or blowing up stumps, or WHATEVER, then that would be GREAT, and my life will continue on in the same fashion as it has in the past, and Petal officials will be spared hearing any more of my ranting and raving on this issue!!

ok, i also called and spoke w/Dr. Hutto about 20 minutes ago, and he advised basically all of the same stuff that WDAM and HA have reported. he said that the explosion that occurred included OTHER explosives, NOT JUST THE explosive found on the middle school student, thus creating a much stronger explosion than just the one from the student. he said that the device found on the student about 3 weeks ago wasn't really a "pipe bomb', but that it consisted of a plastic tube, approximately 2-3 inches long, w/gun powder and it had a fuse. i told him that he should understand that if the public isn't told what's going on and something like this occurs, u r going to have all sorts of rumors and "stories" going on, and i wanted some1 in charge of our school district to tell me what was going on. he said that he totally understood, and that since they had been getting a lot of calls this morning from parents and the media, they decided to go ahead and issue statements which would be on television and the local newspaper (which it obviously has, although i haven't watched any video from WDAM yet if there was any). he also said the child went through their system and went through Youth Court and has been disciplined and he is no longer in Petal Schools.

i asked him didn't they think they should have let the public know about it before the explosives were detonated yesterday, and he said, yes, if they had known that things were gonna turn out the way they did and with the explosion being as unsettling as it was, they would have handled it differently and dealt with it publicly beforehand.

he told me emphatically that what he was telling me (all of the above, in so many words) was the honest truth, and i told him that i appreciated that. he asked me to please let my friends know this is what took place, and that they are sorry for the confusion and for any of the parents and students who were upset by these events.

If the damn thing was obviously a PVC/gun powder firework with fuse, why not just light the damn fuse? Me think the C-4 was overkill and a little on the showy side. Detonation during school hours was even more stupid. Sorry, but I must call a spade a spade on this one. Hutto has opened up an avenue for law suit. Were any kids surveyed for stress counceling. If this surprize explosion had happened near my little grandchild, I'd be one pissed off old man. Petal officals and the EOD team are supposed to have better sense than this. There was NO excuse for not taking this device, (as described by Hutto) to EOD's demolition range.

You're right Hawk, that explosion shook the whole house yesterday.
Many years ago a Reserve Demolition Unit was sent to drop an old water tower in a area that was being taken over as a state park. They used enough C4 to shoot this thing to the moon. It went straight up like a rocket and straight down, landing on all four legs, more dangerous than
when they started. It cracked walls and ceilings, broke windows, and set off dozens of fire alarms. The Army wound up paying a lot for that training exercise, and had to come back and do it right the second time. This one
probobly should have been detonated at Shelby.

Yep, judging from yesterday's denial biased posts, these two news stories are ovbiously CYA press releases. Here again, more questions raised with Hutto's response to MSQueen. What Hutto discribed is, indeed, a pipe bomb. Just because PVC pipe was used makes it no less a "pipe bomb".
Granted, the scrapnel from PVC is not as lethal as steel pipe and the pressure not as intense. But, such a plastic pipe, "Pipe Bomb", if say placed in a coffee can filled with BB's would have devastating effect.

Were any kids surveyed for stress counceling. hawk, ur post raised some issues i hadn't even thought about. ok, my son is a senior, and i don't know if he was scared or not, and even if he was, he might not admit it to me -- his mom. but i have a 5 yr old granddaughter in kindergarten there at the elementary school that i just realized would have been there and sat through that. i will have to call and check on her this evening and see what her thoughts are.

i am with u, hawk. the more i think about it, the more ticked i am about how the entire situation was handled, i.e., hiding the fact from the public (parents and media) that a middle school student had brought the "device" to school, detonating the explosive(s) behind the school (or in Petal PERIOD) when they could have/should have been taken to Camp Shelby or somewhere more appropriate, having insufficient dialog with the folks from Camp Shelby in setting up the "specifics" for the detonation, and again, NOT ADVISING THE PUBLIC OF ANY OF THIS BEFOREHAND!

Dr. Hutto said that Tim Hartfield, the police officer for Petal Schools, was there with the folks from Camp Shelby when they detonated the explosives, and the more i think about that, the more i think, "what relief/assurance is that supposed to give the parents and the students?"

i do appreciate Dr. Hutto's willingness to talk to me today and coming out and telling me what he told me, but i've been down a similar road to this several years ago when there was talk of several students discussing bringing weapons to the schools and (possibly) shooting people. Nothing was told to the public -- we all found out from "word of mouth" -- person to person (similar to this situation). everybody started calling the schools and going to check their children out, and they FINALLY issued a statement for WDAM to air explaining while they felt it wasn't necessary to advise the parents and why the parents should leave their children in school. needless to say, i was LIVID!! not having all the facts, and not being GIVEN all the facts by the school officials, i made an appointment to go talk to Dr. Hutto, and he explained the situation to me, and it was similar to what they did this time. i also attended a school meeting they had and let my feelings be known that i was not happy how the entire matter was handled.

for perhaps SOME on this board, (such as ES, for one), they think it's silly to listen to "rumors" and "gossip". i say some times u have to "call the hand" of those in the middle of the "rumors" to say "yea" or "nay" to them. then u determine where the Truth may be.

also, what REALLY bothers me is this --- would we have even KNOWN about the middle school student bringing a "pipe bomb" or other "device" to school if it hadn't been for the explosion yesterday???? i know what I think!

to Pop -- i'm with u... i give my son credit for having good sense and not "making things up" just to get attention, as some might think.

Honestly it should give absolutely no relief/assurance to the parents and the students. A campus rent-a-cop is taking care of detonating a pipe bomb?! I'm not trying to offend anybody, but he was an idiot when I was in school there. That should not make anybody feel safe. I would actually feel threatened by the fact that the school district is counting on him to take care of it!

The PSD Police is the biggest joke I have ever seen. I'm no legal expert, but this is grounds for a lawsuit and for removing Hutto from the Superintendent office. This could not have been handled worse.

When I talked to WDAM last night, they said that there was nothing that happened. Petal Police denied everything up until the school district came out with a statement. I don't know about any of you, but I trust the news coverage at WDAM to an extent.

I have absolutely no confidence in the Petal School District, now.... and I'm a GRADUATE!

i also cant defend the actions of the petal school police, but before you go calling an officer a (campus-rent-a-cop) you may want to come up with a better term. seeing as you graduated in 2002 you must have had some kind of "run-in" with him to make an insult like this. you may need officer hartfield's help one day..wouldnt that be uneasy??

Cubby I think errors were on several points not just by Petal School police department.
I know Tim Hartfield and he is an honest and good officer. I thank him for dealing every day with what most of you would consider a nightmare teens and kids hundreds of them.

The fact that this was handled by professional military disposal experts, I don’t feel there was danger from the actual detonation as much as that no one said they knew and wouldn’t say. That is an administration issue. It should have been handled at Shelby but we have not heard from them as to why they felt the field was a better choice.

The change came when the rumor became fact. As I stated, as of late last night there was no information given to WDAM. That is a fact. I made the joke concerning Anna Nicole Smith when this was simply a rumor. I am sorry for any confusion my change in attitude may have caused. I can assure you that this matter is very serious.

On the subject of Tim Hartfield, the fact that I graduated from Petal in 2002 is of no concern in this matter. I used that terminology because that is what we (collectively as students) referred to the campus police as. I guess old habits die hard. I know Tim is a good person, and I am certainly not disputing that. I am simply not a big fan of his based on a few issues during the time I was at Petal. I DO however think that there needs to be a very good reason why the Petal Police Department was not notified of this occurance. I don't think it is acceptable to do this type of thing without the appropriate law enforcement on the scene.

Let me assure you I had no "run-in" with Officer Hartfield while I was in school at Petal. Quite honestly I would hope that I don't need his help in anything in the future, but I would offer my assistance any time he needed it.

Hawkeye...I don't think it's over-reacting. I know that I was SHOCKED at what passed for a crisis plan at the school your grandbaby goes to. Equally shocked that in the 4 months that I taught there there were no evacuation or lock-down drills...nor where there working intercoms in many of the rooms so that if there were an emergency, half of the school wouldn't know it.

This afternoon I talked with a lady that has a daughter that is in the 8th grade at PMS. She said that her daughter was friends with the guy who did this and said that her daughter told her that he had gotten written up and got angry at a couple "administrators" and wanted to kill them for writing him up. This happened about 2-3 weeks ago and the "higher-ups" (not naming any names, because I don't know for sure) wanted to keep it hush-hush because they didn't want a big "hoopla" to come of it.

If that's the case, then WHY BLOW IT UP BEHIND THE FRIGGIN SCHOOL? Do it on a Sat. evening or something out in the middle of nowhere.

And with the sound that it made...it was NOT just a "homemade firecracker". I don't care what anybody says.

i just heard the same thing from my son, who's a Senior at PHS. he said that supposedly a Middle School student had a pipe bomb, and "they" (don't know who "they" is) found it, and took it out behind PHS today and detonated it and that it shook the whole school.

i have been watching wdam's 6:00 news, thinking SURELY it would be a news item. still haven't heard anything.

i will be calling the superintendent's office tomorrow to see what they have to say. i would hope that the "powers that be" in Petal don't attempt to try to sweep this under a rug. they REALLY don't want to see me and MANY MANY other parents get upset... :smt013

if this is really true, it is REALLY SCARY!

Hmm, it sounds like teenagers might actually know what they are talking about once in a while.

This is why I'm against keeping cell phones out of school. We have them, but they're not allowed to use them unless its an emergencey. And we have taken them away for the abuse of the privelage before, so they've learned...

Sure sounds like a dead rat in the woodpile to me...if it wasn't "dangerous" they should have taken it back to Camp Shelby to set it off...it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure something isn't right in the land of Oz!

I honestly just think Petal is trying to keep a clean reputation. I don't agree with it. The public has a right to know... especially parents of students.

If parents want to make a statement about their frustration over the way the admin handled this, then the proper way to do that would be to attend a school board meeting or schedule an appointment with the superintendent or a member of the school board. NOT penalize your child by keeping him or her out of the learning environment so they (may) fall behind and miss a day of instruction.

Now, if Nick Ortego (7 on your side) wants a good followup story, he needs to take a ride out to Camp Shelby and interview the EOD-OIC. Then, interview Hutto on what he knew in advance of this exercise of poor judgement. :dork:

Hawk, I agree but don't count on it...they rarely seem to completely stay on top of stories like this...they tell the initial info then that is it! I would be VERY surprised if they report any further on this story.

EOD.The poor bastards just wanted to blow something up.
Been there done that.I know,I know it's still not a good excuse.

And by Hartfield's lil giggle over the reason why they used C4 ... you could tell the boys just wanted to play :D They have to have "real life" situation exercises just like our fire departments do too :smt102 IMO ... no harm, no foul ... just use better communication next time ... Even being an EOD Brat ... as a parent, I still would have like to have known if my kids were, even remotely, threatened by an explosive ... dud or otherwise ... and my kids go to Oak Grove.

I don't see any problem with EOD blowing up the pipe bomb. The problem I see is a student brought 2 pipe bombs to school 3 weeks ago and it was swept under the rug until questions started being ask. I just wonder what else has happened that nobody ever hears about and there's no way in hell I'll ever believe this is the first incident that was kept quiet.

Schools are just like anything else corporate/governmental wise. You will be told what they want you to know and hope you will believe it. Generally the reasoning is so a riot or mass situation doesn't break out. Like most of the crap isn't going to come out eventually.

EOD.The poor bastards just wanted to blow something up.Yeah. I think that's likely the case. They just wanted to hear it go 'Boom'.:)
From what I can surmise of the construction of those two devices, the simplest disposal would to be to pull the fuse cord and pour WD40 down the hole to deactivate the propellant.
Those devices were so poorly constructed that they were most likely non-detonatable.

Been there done that.Yeah? Cool.

I know,I know it's still not a good excuse.Well, no it's not.
In retrospect, EOD is probably wishing they had hauled the things down to Shelby to play with.:)

Now:
I'm wondering who was in possession of those devices during the interim three weeks.

... when EOD deonates, they *are* suppose to take it to the ranges ... unless, it is one of many different reasons why they couldn't ... anything ranging from being unstable to an unknown explosive/charge. My dad said that he could set a C4 charge in my drive way and do nothing but rattle windows. :smt102 I know there are some techs floating around the boards ... would any like to come out of hiding and clarify EOD response protocol??

OK, I'm not an EOD tech but I've worked with them a few times. Quite a few years ago a lady cleaned out her granddad's home in Penssylvania after his death. When she got home she found a ratty old cardboard box wrapped in some clothes she had taken.

Hercules detonators. A VERY old design - copper bodies. Detonators are highly unstable anyways and unlike wine, they do NOT get better with age.

EOD got a DPW truck full - to the top - with sand. Packed them in the sand and drove it to a large sandpit with cruiser escort. Then they packed the box with C-4 all around and blew it in place. Sand all over the pit.

Why so much C-4? So they knew every detonator would get disrupted. Didn't want one blown 50 feet away and covered with sand, still live.

Of course, I've never met an EOD tech who didn't love blowin' $hit up, so that's a factor, too.

Those would probably have been the old mercury fulminate type.
You're correct -those weren't entirely stable when new and become much less so with age.

Of course, I've never met an EOD tech who didn't love blowin' $hit up, so that's a factor, too.Yeah, me either and me too.:)heh heh heh
All that's really required is to saturate 'em with WD40 or used motor oil.

With black powder, pulling the fuse out and dropping in a small bucket of water would have neutralized them too. However, if they were resourceful enough include some sodium granules in with the black powder, dunking in water wouldn't be wise.

FTR: it wasn't too many years ago, a local Dixie teen was killed by a WWII era mortar round he found out at Shelby and brought home to play with. There are still tons of unexploded ordinance in and around the impact zone of CS. If you hunt ANYWHERE out there, don't kick what looks like scrap metal laying exposed in the woods. Walk a big circle around it or better yet, get the hell out of there, its OFF LIMITS.

I remember stories about many of "dud" devices in and around Shelby. Some as far away as Petal and Laurel, in the form of WWII granades (sp) and other devices, including pipe bombs.

Petal does have a plan if anything ever happens at the school. Petal School Police and Petal City Police work very close together. The Petal Police Dept has a swat team they call H.E.A.T. (high-risk entry and tactical) unit. They practice frequently, and focus A LOT on school situations. They have even practiced at night, in the school, so in the unfortunate event of something happening at the school, The two police departments will be as prepared as they can be. I am also a parent, and knowing that they are focusing on what may happen and prepararing for it eases my mind a lot, and I hope it does yours as well.
