Just to introduce myself and say "hello". I'll be moving (along with wife and two kids) to the Hub City and back to my home state after a hiatus in New England. I've not spent much time in Hattiesburg over the years but have been following this site now for several weeks.

Question for the audience: Favorite things to do in and around the area? Restaurants, shops, etc? Thanks in advance - look forward to becoming part of the community.

Best regards!

Welcome Voyager! Glad ya'll are movin' home! I love the Zoo... It is inexpensive and the kids always love playing there are seeing the animals. It is really a great treasure for our little city! Hattiesburg out west is a Zoo in another sense and not in a good way... Be warned, it is nuts out there! Traffic, traffic, traffic!

Welcome Voyager!

Take a look here (http://www.myhattiesburg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16052&highlight=restaurants) where our site owner/moderator, Aaron, created a great piece on "Things to do in Hattiesburg."

Now for Biggie, I think the best restaurant in town by far is Chesterfield's on the corner of Hardy St. and Hwy. 49. Get the Nacho Platter with meat to nibble on while you wait for your meal.

As far as shopping goes, I'd try out the new strip mall behind Logans Steak house. Stores like Target, Old Navy, Books-a-million etc... nice mix for the whole family.

Entertainment? Well lets just say, Biggie is the feature attraction for the Pine Belt.

Now, Voyager... (lighting two cigarettes at once...)

OK, if you aren't into old movies, fuggedaboutit.

As a transplant from SE Mass., welcome! It's a lot nicer here in lots of ways.

The new movie house with stadium seats is a blast. Lots of restaurants but you can do better than the chains. Crescent City, 206 Front, Walnut Circle, etc.

Ditto for Biggie's shout out to the Target plaza. Best mix of stores around and more on the way.

Best fun? Checking the weather back up there in the winter.
Tonights forecast for 39401: Partly cloudy. Colder. Lows in the mid 30s. North winds around 5 mph.
Tonight's forecast for 02360: Partly cloudy. Lows 11 to 16. West winds 10 to 20 mph. Gusts up to 30 mph in the evening.

We'll be moving to the Oak Grove area in June/July from up here in Boston. Yes, the weather here is quite chilly...as it also appears to be in Hattiesburg. For a southern boy like me, anything below 40 is gettin' cold. Thanks for the advice, by the way, about the local establishments.

Anyone with restaurant info/advice, feel free to send it along like Biggie -

Cheers

We're in Oak Grove, too. Nice place, you'll like it.

Very different from Boston, though!

We are new to the Oak Grove area, too. Interested to read more responses about restaurants and things to do. I've heard Leatha's BBQ is not to be missed.

Welcome to the forum!

I haven't eaten at Leatha's, but as a former Memphian I can say that Divine Swine is not too shabby. We even fed DS to my cousin who is also from Memphis and now lives in Chicago, and he was impressed. And this is a guy who had Rendezvous barbecue flown in for his wedding reception.

Oh, and welcome to the Burg and MH!
