View Full Version : Hattiesburg safety?

First of all, I want to say it's stupid that new people can't post new threads, except to introduce themselves or place an ad.
Anyways- I was wondering how safe the city of Hattiesburg is. I'm from Michigan and I just applied to USM. My parents don't think it's safe. Mostly because I'll be so far away from home. But I want to know how safe the city is for a 20 year old female (who doesn't know the area at all!).
Thanks!!

Hey Sam. While there is some dissatisfaction with the CoP and what he has/hasn't done, the place is still pretty safe, IMO. You could definitely do a LOT worse. USM is a great campus.

IMO ... it's meant to get you to actually become a member of our community ... you can always scroll through the past threads, as a guest and figure out our preception of the Hattiesburg area ... but ... that's just my opinion ...
So ... Welcome .... and enjoy your stay!!!

You might think about living on campus the first year, at least until you get a sense of the the city. Most college towns have some risk. And welcome! You're gonna LOVE it next winter!

Thanks everyone!! It sounds like a great city. I guess I'm just a little paranoid. I can't wait to spend the winter with no snow!!

It's not bad until the end of July. August is particularly unpleasant. Ughhh. Just thinking about the Africa heat makes me want to let the boss turn the AC on. *shudder*

HB is about 80 miles from the coast. Yes, if you can go to Michigan in the summer, you'll want to do that.

Sorry. I didn't mean this site is stupid, I just wanted to post my message somewhere else, cause I didn't think anyone would read it under "introduce yourself." I think this site is very helpful.
How hot does it get in Hattiesburg? We had a couple extremely hot days in Michigan last summer... like 98-100 degrees. I loved it! But it would suck if I didn't have Lake Michigan to swim in. There are places to swim in, or near, Hattiesburg (besides pools), right?

Hattiesburg is a great place - just don't read the local newspaper or watch the local TV news. LOTS of places to swim, water ski, canoe, fish ,etc. We DO have some hot weather, but it beats the devil out of living up there in the frozen tundra, don't you think?

It definitely beats living up here in the bitter cold!! That's the main reason I'm moving to the south. I actually took a quiz at findyourspot.com and Hattiesburg was my number 2 city in America. Little Rock was number 1.
What is the average temperature in Hattiesburg in the winter?

I.M.(PROFESSIONAL)O., this is the safest place on the earth. If you'll take look at my ongoing record, crime is continually reduced by about 147% every other week. And if you ever find yourself in a tight spot, just yell out, "Wham-Bam-Shabam!!!" You see, peoples respect that around here.

Ain't nothing "average" about winters in South Mississippi. Today it's about 65 degrees (February 12). Supposed to rain and storm tonight. By day after tomorrow it will probably be 35 degrees. Average? Probably bout 45 or 50 degrees most of the winter with a few days at freezing or below!

Welcome Sam!
I just wanted to tell you as a 24 year old single female, the Hattiesburg area has been a great place for me. Get to know the area, make some good friends, and you'll be on your way to loving it like the rest of us. Crime is here, but its everywhere, and it usually preys on opportunity. Dont go places alone, and use good judgement, and its a great place to be...

Hi, Sam - Check out http://www.usm.edu/police for the latest crime stats - it will bounce you to the Dept. of Education's CLERY Act reporting site where you can pick a school and get crime reports for the past several years.
You'll be living on-campus for the first year anyways, and the campus is really safe. As others have posted, go in a group off campus and you'll be fine.
Besides, you've now got a buncha friends here to steer you right!

As far as swimming goes, the state is eat up with creeks & rivers, in Hattiespatch I recommend the Bouie upstream of town. (the old American Sand & Gravel Co. site)
Also, where're you from? I've got kin in Saganaw, Flynt & on Makinaw Island.

You swim in lake Michigan? THAT"S nasty.
Sam14
02-12-2007, 09:13 PM
Hahaha, do people really think it's nasty to swim in Lake Michigan? I always thought it was the country's largest supply of freshwater. Am I wrong??? I am very picky about where I swim, cause I get disgusted at a lot of things- like seaweed- and I definitely prefer Lake Michigan! Sandy beaches, no seaweed (unless you swim out real far), decent sized waves (on some days), and it's very big so you don't have to share the beach with anyone if you go to the right place. Wow, I really can't get over the fact that people think Lake Michigan is nasty. That blows my mind.
Anyways- I'm from Northern Michigan (Not the U.P.), the "pinky" area. You know... Michigan is shaped like a mitten. :)

any chance u r from McBain??? or Cadillac? been through the u.p.
crossed that big ass bridge...Mackinaw i think they call it. look here now, us southern folk like gritts....they aint got none in MI that i know of. but they have a heckuva lot of hashbrowns (we gottem' here to):( Practically lived there for a year or so on and off my 32 years. Nice people up there, really got along with everyone. In the summertime, about the middle to end of july that highway that goes thru the u.p. is an awesome ride...dont even need and A.C. about every 20 miles or so you get a glimpse of the lake. Really good scenery.
If u do decide to come down, make some friends and take a canoe trip down the Okatoma creek. Different scenery, but a site that will leave and everlasting impression on you!
Their is no other place like South Mississippi...if there is I wonna go there.!!!:-)

Sam, welcome to MH.
I was 18.5 years old and from Wisconsin when I loved to Hattiesburg to go to USM in 1997. My parents thought the same thing. Eventually, they accepted it.
Hattiesburg is just like any town, there are good parts and there are bad parts. Good thing is you have us here to help you find a good place to live (unless you are living in the dorms). If you need any help with that, let us know. We'd be more than happy to help you.
(By the way, once you post either 20 or 25 times, you will be able to post anywhere on this forum, except for the private groups).

Hmm. I was born and raised in Milwaukee and when I was younger I swam in Lake Michigan. Then when i got older, the only time I got in was on New Years Day (aka as part of the Polar Bear Club). Those were good times!

how hot is it? We train soldiers going to Iraq to help acclimate them to the heat. Sure, it's not desert hot, but it's steamy in the summertime.
I wouldn't advise swimming in the gulf. Now, THAT's nasty, although I haven't seen the water quality since Katrina knocked out some of the sewers dumping their stuff in the gulf, so it might be better. The coast just isn't the same since Katrina, but it's there if you want it. We're about 3 hrs from the beautiful beaches and waves in Pensacola, and another hour for Ft. Walton Beach, which, IMO, is better than the beaches of Mexico, and much safer.
Why are you coming all the way from MI to USM? Just curious about that one...

I am coming all the way from Michigan because I hate being cold!! I knew nothing about the south, so I took this quiz called Find your Spot and Hattiesburg was my number 2, so I looked for colleges there, and USM looked good, so.......

Yes, it's pretty hot here because of the high humidity we have. You'll be very thankful for your air conditioner, around July/August especially. :D

Yeah, you sit in your nicely air conditioned home, looking outside, thinking how great it looks... "looks like it might be just a little hot" you think to yourself, so you get up and open the door and it's like opening the door to your oven. The heat wave hits you and you think 'nevermind' as you quickly close the door.
For me, the past two summers haven't been THAT bad. I remember it being hotter than it has the last few, though. The worst part is waiting for your car air to get going and cool off the 150degree seats. Yeah, I'm definitely not looking forward to summertime...
