I've got a computer with an Asus mobo, 3 internal DVD burners (2 hooked to mobo IDE header, 1 on IDE card), 2 internal IDE drives attached to mobo header, and 2 SATA drives attached to SATA header on mobo. Running XP Pro SP2. I don't think anything else is pertinent.
My problem is that the SATA drives were striped as a Raid0 but one or both of the drives were going bad, so I took all the data off the drives and archived it elsewhere. I tried to troubleshoot the drives to see which one was going bad, and I had to unstripe the set to see which one it was. I still couldn't figure out which one was bad using the mfg's tools, so I was going to just buy another drive and replace them one at a time until I figured it out.
The main problem is that if I unattach the SATA drives from the computer, the computer refuses to boot, even though the computer doesn't boot from the SATA drives. I've wiped the SATA drives clean and there's no data there, but the computer won't get past the end of the POST process, it halts on "insert boot disc" or some such nonsense. If I attach the drives - power and SATA cable - it will boot.
I've looked at everything in the BIOS and can't see anything wrong there. I've looked at disc management in the control panel and can't see anything wrong there.
It's gotta be something I'm overlooking, but for the life of me I can't figure out what it is. Any help would be appreciated.
