If it's anything like other Gannett papers, it means much more local news and information. JMHO.
Well - - - we will see.
May mean the price is going up.

They finally started putting misdemeanor arrest in the crime report, before it was only felonies.

A lot of what they are doing is looking more and more like the Clarion Ledger... wonder if it's just a simple redesign to look more like the CL?

100 bucks says its a redesign
a little more than a year ago, myself, and all the editors holed ourselves up in a room and studied other newspapers all day for their design...
anybody want to take that bet?

The C-L has changed the font that they use for their headlines.

B/f said he paid 50 cents for Times Picayune and he can't believe The Hattiesburg American is 50 cents a day.
No, he doesn't believe he is getting a value.
Well, sometimes we all need a change and I wish the Hattiesburg American well. I read it and think they do a good job.

I heard they're going to shut down the HA forums and redirect traffic to myhattiesburg, instead. :)

I believe it's a redesign. Won't matter, though. I read it online - don't purchase the print edition.
I have a friend who said several newspapers he reads have also started charging for online viewing...hope it doesn't come to that around here. I do get the paper delivered but I also enjoy checking out updates online.

i would enjoy reading the updates if i didnt have to wade through the mounds of crap in order to get to find the real news
newspapers will struggle in getting people to purchase online subscriptions...larger ones have tried and subsequently backed off that idea...
theres something we as americans believe...we shouldnt have to pay for the news unless its delivered as a tangible product that i can hold in my hands and enjoy over a cup of coffee...and even then it should be a nominal fee
the trick...at least as far as i have read and it makes sense...is to get the two products to create (god i hate using this BS corporate buzzword) synergy with each other...
they have to feed off of each others weaknesses and strengths and it takes a lot of effort to make sure that happens...our area is, and always will be behind the times in a technological sense...by roughly 3-5 years. it has a lot to do with this being such a conservative area...and because we fear change...and we fear venturing into the unknown.

I won't take the bet. With the more local news will come a redesign. I guarantee it. That is what nearly all the Gannett papers are doing.
Read this article. This is just an example of what many of us are going to be doing. Most newspapers in the chain have until the end of March to "unveil" how they plan on becoming the source for local news.

I have met, during my tenure at the american, specifically during the katrina days, most of the people mentioned at the news-press in fort myers...and i have to say this
those guys are the brightest that gannett has to offer IMO...
i am honestly excited and cant wait to see what kate marymont and mackenzie warren do with online news... it will set the precedent.
after reading that article...they are clearly making an attempt at changing the culture of the snobbish ways of the newsroom. its a welcome change.

Surprise, surprise!
The HA got a redesign. (http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070325/NEWS01/70325001)
The online presence doesn't seemed to have changed, however.

I think the new look is very nice! I think it is cleaner - brighter and alot more local focused. I imagine the older generation folks will not like the new change but I think it looks great!

i actually suggested that at one point and got laughed at...
well...when we decided to push forward real forums anyway instead of the hacked mess i threw together right after the hurricane for the hurricane victims and families

Did anyone else think the font in the "new" HA print edition was a little small?
Or do I just need to admit that I need reading glasses? :)
