I was doing a little family history research tonight, and came across this funny bit in a story about the history of Obion County, TN. As there's been some discussion about our own paper today, I thought it would be interesting to see how "times have changed."
The first newspaper in Union City was published a short time previous to the war,
by H. C. Lawhorn. About 1867 the Herald was established by David Chambers, who
soon after associated with himself his brother, Daniel W. Chambers. The former
died in about two years, and the latter continued the paper until about 1883. He
was an extremely eccentric man, and many issues of the paper did not contain a
single intelligible sentence from the editor. He had been a gallant soldier in the
Confederate Army, and had lost a leg in the service. This fact impelled the
citizens of the county to support his paper.
