So, all I am wondering is will Hattiesburg ever become more worldly? The city is building all these new establishment and when they are built it seems like the whole city goes ape crazy about it, why? Yes, it might be a good establishment but geez...is it that great that traffic is backed up for miles? It seems like there is a huge brick wall built around the city and its preventing the city of change in attitude. Maybe with all the new things coming into the city it will open the minds of everything here. It seems like Hattiesburg has nothing to offer except to go out to eat. I think we need some museums, parks, more concerts and not rodeos, more festivals, etc etc. Hattiesburg is such a beautiful historic town with nothing to offer and well...it sucks! Also, there isn't like an actual real club life here? Whats all that about...reasoning because its the Bible Belt maybe? I want to go to a real club with real dance music, like House, techno, club music. Im tired of going out and listening to "shake your hump" music. Is there any people in this town that appreciate real music made by DJs that you can get on a dance floor and not worry about anybody else but yourself? I hope so because this place has potential for a REAL club...Hattiesburg itself has potential but where are the people dang it!!!

If you feel so passionate about it- why don't you open up a "real club" :)

Well, I've been saying we needed a real club for a while, instead of the hole's in a wall that we have. The simple truth though, is that if we have clubs now, and they close down every 12 months. So, it's obvious we can't support a real club. Put up a really nice building, with a really nice interior, and charge a $10-$20 cover and no one is going to show up.

I am asking-

Do you think that people open a club, not realizing how HARD it is to keep a handle on the money, work the LONG hours, and keep employees. I would imagine that the will to go to work would wain after a while.

Clubs and restaurants have the biggest failure rate of any businesses for the reasons you stated.

Speaking of clubs, my uncle who used to work for ASCAP says some open up and close for money-laundering purposes. Never meaning to stay open or to write something off.

Well your post has the same coherency and direction that the city of hattiesburg has.......... none

I'll try and dissect your post and answer a few questions.

First of all maybe you have some sort of internal conflict between your worldly and spiritual selves, b/c it appears as though you were complaining about the city being worldly and then you seem to bash it for being in the bible belt. Maybe you can clarify that one.

Why does every business built add to traffic? It's simple, our city along with every other city in the south is a sprawling uncontrolled mess that relies entirely upon the automobile for transportation. More residents and more businesses mean more traffic... it's as simple as that.

Why do people go ape crazy when something is built? Welcome to the post-modern era. We are a society driven by perpetual change, it interests us and keeps us going.

Why doesn't Hattiesburg have a "real club". By that I think you mean one that cost entirely too much money and girls are shaking their tail feathers to techno music (ex. see Atlantis in Mobile). Evidently the market wouldn't support it. Is it b/c there are a bunch of "bible thumpers" in Hattiesburg? Partly, but it might also have to do with the fact that two of the more liberal cities in the South, New Orleans and Mobile are a mere 90 miles away drawing in alot of party and club goers. Even in Mobile the so called "real club" Atlantis is constantly changing names and ownership. Owning Bars and Clubs are just about the most risky business venture one could enter. The market could possibly support it, but seeing as how when I go to The Bottling Company, and it's only 60 percent full on a good night, aint a good sign for the night life of Hattiesburg.

look where the bottling company is- in the hood

i know the guy who owns the alamo in laurel- says his business has trippled since hattiesburg has banned smoking--haha

if you build a "real" club and keep all the trash out of it, it would work out better--the idea has been tried, but nobody could get away from inviting the "ropers girls"

In the hood? You need to get out of suburbia and venture downtown more often b/c downtown is on its way back. I wouldn't call it the hood at all.

Man- the BoCo is not in the hood. You can park anywhere downtown and walk from the Bottling Company, the Boom Boom Room, to Brownstones- Heck you could even walk to the hippo though the back parking lot. I think it is great and there are alot- I mean alot of people downtown at night on the weekends. I won't walk home unescorted, but if I had to I would. People need to give it a try.

As far as this real club is concerned... I have not wanted to hear that kind of music since I was in college- and I don't know that many college kids that listen to that kind of music. I am pretty sure you can hear some techno at the Groove? I think you have to be in a bigger city with a larger population of people that do certain drugs. Maybe we have those people here in town, but they prefer to listen to something else or go to the groove? There was a late night after hours bar, but they banned those.

yeah, Bo Co is in the hood... I've known numerous people that had their cars broken in to down there and one girl that had a brick thrown through her windshield. I refuse to drive my car down there after dark. I'll gladly ride with someone else though... I like Bo Co.

itll be a long time before hattiesburg has a real club

the only place that pretends to be a club(sports rock) is so run down, ratty, poorly ran, and allows children in there that i refuse to go there...and i spend a lot of money on booze and partying on the weekends.

as far as the bottling company is concerned, theyre just trying to cater to everyone...as a result..they cater to no one
