Yep, I just saw something on tv...lets start praying now it will be as quiet at it was last year...if not, we may be in for a rough ride!

They said the same thing last year. Global warming you know. They'll keep saying it until it happens and then they'll start in with the, "I told you so's".

I was told that if I stay for another hurricane, I will be shot as soon as they can get to me. The week of no communication was apparently hell on the Sner and those close friends. Whether I go or not is another story.

Well, I can't imagine it getting much worse than Katrina. I mean, it was one of the worst hurricane's in history and the eye came right through this area. I'll stay, but if we lose power and water again, I'm taking a vacation somewhere.

I'm gone! Two weeks without water and power taught me a valuable lesson. Besides, the money I spent running down gas for the generator could fund a nice trip elsewhere - and I have a camper. I lived 2 weeks in my camper parked at my house. Never again.

Amen Maggie. I had lived in Biloxi one week. Two blocks from the beach.

I'm staying, but if we get another Katrina-esque hurricane with every power pole snapped, I'm going to Disney World for a few weeks. We were going to do that last time, but opted to stay because we thought the power was going to be on any day at my work... wrong.

I lived in South La. during Katrina and stayed for it.
I live on the coast now, and I will be seceeding to Vermont for the next one. I'll bring back Howard Dean dollars for everyone.

Not staying.
The sound of trees hitting our house during Katrina convinced us of this.

That was sickening, wasn't it. I guess the only worse sound would've been the water rising -- I'm grateful some of us were spared that. I had the total loss experience in Camille, lost almost everything but was too young and dumb to be scared. Then the total fear experience in Katrina. I hope we're done.

Amen Maggie. I had lived in Biloxi one week. Two blocks from the beach.
Our apartment was just north of the railroad tracks in the Broadmoor section of Gulfport...you could stand on our porch and see the beach...I thought my mom would kill me (and my two girlfriends who shared the apt. with me) when she finally got there to see if we were ok. The only way she got in was my uncle who worked at HPD took her down in a patrol car and they hiked in to get us....NOT a pretty sight when she found us...my ears still burn from all the fussin and cussin she did that day! :)
Hermione

Yeah, the railroad tracks stopped the water where we were too. Had just rented a little cottage behind the Trade Winds Motel. When we got back from the base, our cottage was the first thing between us and the beach with any vertical elements left. I haven't been able to go to the Coast since Katrina.

Kitty I thing our invite was for the "tent jail" if need be AFTER the hurricane...if you will remember Wynn strung up some fencing, put a big tent in the middle and put guards on it to house prisoners after the storm. Thought he was doing something BIG!

Oh, I remember "Tent City" Maggie-D!
I just had this vision of a tent, the wind, falling trees, flying debris--you know, the Katrina Experience. :smt103

I know I sure got tired of grilled food after "the storm". The Beer was good though. I still remember my hotwater heater had warm water in it three days afterwards. But you can bet your butt from here on out I will be a lot better prepared for a 'cane.....I got me a LIST of mandatory supplies,
1. Beer
2. More Beer
3. Crown Royal
4. More Crown Royal
5. Barrel full of gasoline
6. Chainsaw (ready to work at a moments notice)
7. Coleman stove
8. Filled to capacity deep freeze
9. Lots of ice in the deep freeze
10. Window unit A/C
11. Bug and tar remover (does anyone rember the love bugs?)
12. Generator
13. Fan
14. Amplified Rabbit Ears (spend the 30 bucks, its totally worth it)
15. Extra plugs for the generator
16. Good amount of water (although I didnt totally loose pressure last go around)
17. Flashlights and batteries (I now have a couple of rechargeable ones)
18. Plenty of T/P
19. Plugs for tires. (anybody try to get a flat fixed a couple days after the storm?)

Good list, FB. More alcohol than I need, but some good suggestions. I got rid of my deep freeze, but I have one of those big "five-day" coolers on wheels and a smaller cooler and then a little cooler. Fill'em up, keep a down comforter thrown over them, and work your way down. I still had ice on Friday. I may also buy one of those phone rechargers that uses a regular battery. Anybody tried those?
A word of caution. Last time, I got hungry for snacks and chips. This past summer, I tried to stock up on those for hurricane season. This is not a good idea. It is impossible to "stock up" on stuff like that. This time, I'll wait till the last minute to buy the cookies and the Fritos. ;)

I have to admit that you are all scaring me just a weeeeee bit. I have lived through tornadoes and blizzards but a hurricane is a new experience for me - and one that I would rather not see. Since my husband will be required to stay, no matter what, we will most likely also stay. Are there any good sites that list must-have items in case of a hurricane? I would not know where to begin.

We used to say you needed to be self-sufficient for three days. After Katrina, it was more like three weeks for many people. Just try to imagine not being able to depend on city services, phone, power, food and water. What would you need?
Water
Canned and dry food
Fuel (I have sterno, others have grills, Coleman stoves, propane stoves, etc.)
Sanitation -- baby wipes, TP, paper towels.
Lights
Water to bathe and flush (fill the washer)
Batteries
Cell phone, radio, etc.
First aid. Keep your Rx supply topped off.
Ice. Make your own. Every empty spot in my freezer has a container of water. Block ice lasts longer.
Etc.

Here is a pretty good site, but dont let it overwhelm you, alot of its for super serious stuff, like if you lived 10 ft. from the beach.:)

All the beer mentioned makes me laugh. Just before Katrina hit, like Sunday morning if I remember right, my wifes cousin, who lives just down the road, made a dash for the Corner Fuel Mart at the south gate of camp shelby. All they had left when he got there was beer, nothing on the shelves. So, he walks into the cooler and purchased whatever beer was left, thus beget my taste for Rolling Rock, cuz he had plenty of it.

Hmm, if it was cold, you could barter all that excess beer for stuff you need. Reminds me of a lady I know who gave up and left town after Katrina when she realized the only thing she had to flush the toilet with was Scotch.

Hermi, let me put it to you this way about the suds and spirits. I have been living on my own for 13 years now, some how, some way, I let my father talk me into stayin' with him for the 16 days without power(he only lives about 2 miles down the road). I moved out for a reason, I stayed with him because he talked me into it. He didnt need my help, nor did I need his. It was a freakin' nightmare, thus the suds and spirits were needed to calm down the nightmare........I felt like I was 15 years old all over again. :smt118

Oh I understand! I immediately thought of a bunch of people I'd need alcohol to spend 16 hours with, much less 16 days!

:smt118 :smt118 :smt118 :smt118 And the last one, Son your at my house. He didnt like it when I said "Yessir, and You invited me here." It was a rough couple of weeks. I didnt disrespect him, but I had to remind him I wasnt 14 years old anymore.

About seven years ago, I went through a rather rough period where I needed to come home. My Sner had the foresight to say no. (She did say she'd help me financially for awhile, but that I couldn't come home) While it hurt at the time, I'm grateful. She was right when she said I'd been gone too long (at that time I had been out of the house 7 years).

I should have added to my previous post that my mom and I have recently been talking about living together. Now I have the sweetest little mother in the known universe, and she says she has the sweetest child, but we talked about it and said, "Nah, not now." I did live with my grandmother for about a year when I was trying to write a thesis, and it was miserable. There's something about two women and one kitchen . . .

Got a 5 year old and a 5 month old, both boys, I have caught myself quoting my father's statements a time or two. I guess you can say I just wasn't in the mood to hear his ("crap" his wise words) during those couple of weeks. Thus let me reinterate the suds and spirits to lighten my mood a little. I am quite sure that if the tables were reversed I would have said the same things he did!:)
I noticed the bartered statement about the alkeehaull......I had quite a few people call me after the storm and asked if I had any, I told em' "only got a couple, and I am savin' till the power comes back on.":)
I will also remember to get some fly traps. We had a slough of flies around the house because they would not come and pick up the garbage. Now that's annoying to the utmost. At my moms house in Pascagoula they had a horrible time. I will have to say it almost reminded me of those commercials about Africa when you see the flies all over everybody. Those damn things were every freakin' where!!!:smt118

Fly traps are an excellent suggestion! Thanks - - that's one thing I like about these discussions, somebody always suggests something useful you wouldn't have thought of yourself.
