I've an employee who I believe is going to attend today... I'll ask her tonight...

Hattiesburg American site is reporting 1,179 people attended the service today. It started 15 minutes late waiting for everyone to get it.

What do you think that all means?

The other thread says Temple was packed as well. Were the services at different times? Perhaps some folks attended both services. I could see that happening.

Nope, they were around the same time. 10 at Crosspoint and 10:30 at TBC. Granted, Easter is when all the "twice a years" come out of the wood work... but as long as both churches (and every other church) continue to reach out to the community, and not try to compete with one another, then that's all that matters.

That's funny about Temple being packed. We didnt make it to church this morning because the 5 year old had a virus.
Now I could be wrong in what I saw on the tube while I was scanning the channels but I happen to hit the channel that Temple's service was on and a couple of camera angles showed quite a few empty seats (something you just don't see at Easter services).......but the other camera angles showed the place to look like it was pretty packed out. I have never been there, and I wasn't there this morning, most of the empty seats looked to be down front, as goes the saying backrow Baptist I guess.. Who knows???

I believe it would have been April 1. For some reason, I know a lot of people that did not make the service that day. Myself included. Today was packed though... just a few empty seats in the balcony.

Lips has the answer. I don't know because I didn't see it. The only local churches that run live on Sunday are First Baptist and Main St. Baptist. Everyone else is tape delay.

I'm moving my question to this thread:

Will SOMEONE that went to Crosspoint please post what time of worship music was done. Praise? hymns?

timboe

Lips, I also pm'ed you.

It was acoustic music. Mostly praise, but we had one traditional hymn. I'm not familiar with most of the traditional stuff, but I think it was "How Great Thou Art."

how can you not know traditional hymns? here comes SoMissTV on how it's not traditional----

The "somewhat ex boy" went to Crosspoint yesterday- and loved it. He said that he got there early and that Sharon (Register) talked to him for about 30 minutes so that he wouldn't have to just sit there alone... and then she introduced him to some other people for him to sit with. He said he enjoyed the music and the sermon, and guessed that there were about 400-500 people there.

Because, for the most part, I don't like or listen to traditional hymns. Also, except for the last four years or so, I've never been a regular church-goer (largely because of the music---the music bored me so much that I was daydreaming through the sermon).

Contemporary music, though, livens me up and puts me in the proper frame to listen and appreciate the sermon.

Ya think dragging a stolen cross up 49 is why they all had on shades, caps pulled down over their faces and looking down in that HA pic?

1st service 1100

2nd service 400-500 was the guess.

bystander
04-18-2007, 06:16 PM
The actual number was closer to 300....the room had a capacity of around 450 and it wasn't nearly full. And just for clarification, the number of adults at the first service was between 750-800....the remaining number must have been children and nursery workers.

This is sort of off the topic but I didn't want to start another thread about Dr. Register, but the current events seem to have festered years ago and someone should have put a stop to it back then before it got out of hand.

I remember years ago at the East Campus, Dr. Register wanted to make the services more casual and he promoted his plan at the deacons meeting for a vote. The deacons voted to keep it formal (suit and tie), and the following Sunday Dr. Register ignored the wishes of the deacons and showed up in a polo shirt. He never understood that in a Baptist Church that everyone has ONE vote and he wanted total control.

Nooo it was everyone else whos misunderstood, that there was only ONE vote and it was his. Its good to see people who have been gone for a long time coming back.

So will the "suit and tie" dress code be revisited?

Does Paul Koonce, despite being a dapper dresser, even own a tie? :-D

I don't see why dress would be such a big deal... I understand some like the pastor and others to be all suited up (my mom's one of them)... for me personally- I don't care if people are in blue jeans, as long as they're are dressed in a respectful manner. I had an "oops" moment in church yesterday! I was wearing a dress that I borrowed from my roomate- it's a wrap type dress... didn't realize until I was sitting down that the dress has a tendency to slide apart! Looked down and half my bra was hanging out- yikes!!! Talk about being embarassed. I couldn't focus on the rest of the servive b/c I was so dang paranoid that I was flashing everyone!

I don't think the dressing up or going casual was the issue back then, it was more of the start of his turning his nose up toward the staff and deacons.

I would doubt he has anyone in his pocket with the means to cover that kind of bill.

He wasnt real successful with his list of the top 100 givers to Temple.

I think the Polo shirt came way after the pulpit disappeared, the childrens missions programs demphasized, the blackballing of anyone who questioned any of his decisions. The polo shirt came about the same time as he begin interfering with his staff and the attempts to force his son on them.

I tried to rep you on that, Ford. I was going to agree and say they're doing a fine job of defeating their own purpose, or what they claim to be their purpose.

I haven't been to church regularly in years. Occasionally, I'll decide to go and maybe get back into it, but every time I get near a group of church-goers, I remember the bulls**t and the politics of it and remember why I stopped in the first place. It wouldn't be so bad if the b.s. was avoidable, but it's so pervasive that you either have to jump in and participate, or run.

While channel surfing this morning, I noticed that Crosspoint's services are airing on Comcast channel 11.

Those who keep up with "clergy fashions" might be interested in knowing that Dean was not wearing a polo shirt.

He was wearing a crew neck shirt. :)

It's a crew neck shirt, Doc. If a crew neck shirt is appropriate for the pastor, then I think it would be just fine for a visitor. :)
