The wife and I went to Southern Pines to look at a year old border collie we saw on the internets. Long story short, we have a loaner dog for the weekend. We'll see how it goes, but Syndey is already getting along great with the new man in her life...

Well, I took Jake back to the shelter this morning. We realized Sydney loves playing with dogs, but was a little weirded out by the prospect of living with one. It was a very tough decision to make. However, Jake had already been neutered by the shelter last week, so we're confident that he'll be adopted.

If anyone wants a year old, almost housebroken, black border collie mix with a good attitude and a strong desire to have his belly scratched, then Jake's your man! Check him out at the Southern Pines Animal Shelter, and be sure to tell your friends!

They played well all day, but last night the new dog started getting cranky and lunged a few times at Sydney. Sydney walked around for a little while with her tail down and hid behind my chair. They wouldn't go to sleep last night; so we crated Jake in the guest bedroom, where my wife slept, and Sydney stayed with me.

You know how there's a feeling you get when you know a dog should be in your home? Although we REALLY liked Jake, we just didn't get the feeling.

With that said, he is a wonderful dog. Since the shelter neutered him, I anticipate that he'll be adopted fairly quickly; otherwise, they wouldn't have spent the money on it. I did tell the shelter that if his number comes up and no one has adopted him, to give me a call. That dog will have a life somewhere, even if we just have to figure out how to deal with it.

Someone please adopt this dog.

SoMissTV, he was sooo cute...sorry you didn't feel like you could keep him. Sometimes it just takes a few days for the babies to get used to each other...he will probably find a home..he has alot going for him!

actually they would have. they spay and neuter every single dog and cat that enters the gate.

sorry you had to take him back. he looks really cute. too bad they didn't get along. maybe you should start out with a puppy. that way the puppy will know sydney's "ways" and learn to live with her and you guys. not the other way around - as seemed to be the case with Jake.

Are you sure? That doesn't make much sense. The shelter took in 8200 animals last year; there's no way that they spayed / neutered even half that number. My understanding was that they only spay / neuter animals that have been claimed or are likely to be claimed. Jake was the only dog in the outside run that was ready to take home that day.

yep... positive. each animal has to be. they turn away no animals, but they all go through the "surgery". this prevents more stray/unwanted animals from coming into the shelter. i know it seems like it is a "waste of money" if animals aren't adoptable, but it would cost a lot more if they let animals go that weren't. we talked about this at our board meeting last month. they are going to be bringing a low cost spay/neuter program to hattiesburg sometime soon. they are working out the details right now. so hopefully that will relieve the shelter of some of those expenses.

Can you talk them into a low-cost shot clinic too? I know that in Reno, those happened once a month. The vets took turns hosting it. To get both of my girls their shots (3 different shots), it was $30. Versus the at least $50 it costs for one of them.

You're talking about animals that leave the shelter. I agree that all animals that leave with people are fixed, but those not all animals are fixed after their intake. Otherwise, you'd be putting down animals that you just paid to fix. I know that any animal that leaves the shelter with people has to be fixed. However, Sydney wasn't fixed when I picked her out, and she had been there a couple of weeks. She had to be fixed before I could pick her up, which took about a week.

yeah... tell me about it. nahla and kramer were $195 last month.

i know that we have two vets on our board - Dr. Ricks and Dr. Brenda Sumrall. they are really trying to make a lot of improvements for the city and for the shelter. i think they will have to see how this spay/neuter program goes. it is something new and very risky and they are really having to work out a lot of the details of it. it is risky b/c the area vets are "losing business" with a program like this. so they aren't really asking them permission. they are just going to send them "courtsey letters" letting them know the plan. hopefully they will work with the shelter on this program. we have a meeting next week so i'll give you guys an update on the spay/neuter program plan.

The shelter took in 8411 animals last year. If every animal were fixed, the shelter would have to perform 24 spay / neuter procedures, 7 days a week, 365 days in a row.

well maybe they only do the ones sent home. the impression i get is that they do this to all the animals. could be wrong though.

When my wife was on the board, the impression that she received was that all animals that leave are fixed. Generally, only animals that are very likely to be adopted, and animals that have already been adopted are sent to be fixed. The ones that aren't fixed are the ones more likely to be put down.

My line of thinking is that because Jack was already fixed, he'll be more likely to be adopted. Who knows? He may end up at PetsMart next week.

I hope he does go to PetsMart. I REALLY liked him, and it was VERY difficult to return him this morning, even though we were just trying him out and hadn't committed to adopting him. I felt as if I was abandoning him, and that sucked. :(

i don't know how they choose the dogs that go there. but today we had all males (4). one terrier mix, one boxer mix, and two boston terrier mixes. all puppies. i know the dogs go to Dr. Brenda's clinic before coming to petsmart. and they are returned to her clinic if they aren't adopted. maybe we will see jake there sometime soon!

There's no way that people visiting the shelter will not be drawn to that dog. You can't ignore "I CAN GO HOME TODAY" posted on the front of the run. You did a good thing, SoMiss. I wish there were more people like you.
