Can anyone point me to a good freeware DVD ripper? Hell, maybe even a good one that's not that expensive would be nice... Also, a format converter, so I can get them on my portable media device...

Glad you brought this up. I have several movies and shows recorded on my computer, but I don't know how to get them off the hard drive and onto DVD. I assume this would be the same software need?

Those are not the same things.
Sir Mick, take a look at Nero. It's a pretty decent program for getting .avi, .mov, and .wmv onto DVD-Video discs.

I think there is a free Lite version available, but Nero came with my computer and I really like it. It manages to have a pretty simple interface but still has a lot of customization underneath.

DvdShrink & DVD Decrypter are 100% free - AnyDvd (which really isnt necessary) cost money......

When I go to it, on the second or third page, it ask how you are going to pay for it? A one time fee of $39.99 or per year or per month. That isn't free.

Has links to both downloads at the top.
Ok, that worked and I have DVD Shrink. Now, I have XP Media Center and have my satellite box wired into my comp and can record from the tv on my hard drive and I want to be able to burn stuff recorded from tv onto a dvd. Is this possible? I can't find where the media center has stored the stuff or how to make dvdshrink search for specific type files. My comp came with MyDvd but it doesn't work. It says I need to update windows, but I've updated everything that can be updated and it still doesn't work.

If your recording from TV onto your hard drive, you probably need something that will help you burn the DVD. NERO just to burn, or if you really want to get serious, I used to make them with Pinnacle Studio. You can add menu's and edit the video.
I'm thinking about pre-ordering Nero 8 and you get the Enhanced Nero 7 for free. Is it worth $79.99?

It's a solid product, I use other free programs, but I often wish I had it so I wouldn't have to deal with the problems that free programs have.

Let me explain a little more about MS Media Center.
Media center records as dvr-ms file - if you want to use DVD Shrink - you will need to convert it. This is not necessary as Media Center also has a built in application (basiclly XP with a shell) and can burn directly....Files are located in the recorded TV folder (assuming you didnt change it). All you need is Nero - the free download is fine. ***Cheat*** - buy a new burner and nero "full copy" comes with it.......35-40 dollars
Now for the "juicy" stuff - you can use external programs to "watch" the my recordings folder and automaticlly convert the dvr-ms file to avi, vob, etc.... then you can remove the DRM and the nasty dvr-ms extention.
Check into other programs that do HTPC applications much easier and do not use DRM in their recording scheme....Media Portal comes to mind immediatly.
