My wife's family dog was put down yesterday, just shy of his 15th birthday. Hobbes, a stray puppy who came into the family when my wife was 12, had been suffering from kidney and hip problems for the past few months. When Hobbes was unable to pick himself up Sunday evening, my father-in-law had to pick him up and put him in his bed. The next morning, after much discussion, and realizing that Hobbes had lived a full and rewarding life, my in-laws decided that it was time for him to go to his great reward. With them standing beside him at the vet's office, Hobbes went to a far better place Monday, April 30th, 2007.
I hope he's chasing slow moving cars with bumpers made of rawhide.

sorry to hear about ur losses somisstv-
we had 3 dogs that we had to put down- all which seems in the last couple of years-
one that is at mom and dad's now is a stray- and mom named him eddie after the show frasier. then my bro. got a jack russell which was supposed to be fixed at the shelter, but wasn't. so eddie and purdie had puppies, and now they have a brandy-----

It's always hard to lose a pet...even if they have had a long and rewarding life.

yeah! exactly what she said :bhug:
Thanks for all the kind words. I knew that if anyone would understand - it would be the dog lovers, especially those who have lost a pet. I told SoMiss last night that I feel like I lost my little brother. I'm sure some of you know exactly what I mean.

I am so sorry for your loss. Our pets are members of our families. It is very hard to let them cross the Rainbow Bridge. My Miss Weenie is 9 now & her face & little hands are turning white. She is my 4 legged child.:smt022

Awwww...I know that pain. We had my dog Missy for 13 years...half my life also! She passed away on Feb 19, 2007. I miss her so much! It's hard to lose a pet...they are always there for you no matter what, a best friend and a loyal companion!

Love and prayers are with you...it is soooo hard to loose a four-legged friend...just continue your love for him and know he is at peace...also know that one day you will be able to see him again..I am sure he will watch down on you everyday and think about all the good times he had with you...and the love you gave him. Find comfort in that. I know how your feel, been there, done that!

Oh! ;) I've always wanted one! But I'm too afraid I wouldn't be active enough for them. And they would tear up my house from boredom.
Is she as smart as the BC's are?

Herding behavior
Dogs can herd other animals in a variety of ways. Some breeds, such as the Australian Cattle Dog, typically nip at the animals' heels (for this reason they are called heelers). Others, notably the Border Collie, get in front of the animals and use what is called strong eye to stare down the animals; they are known as headers. All herding behavior is modified predatory behavior.
Herding dogs as pets
Due to their intelligence and beauty, herding dogs are often chosen as family pets. These dogs have been bred to work and must be kept active. Herding breeds will herd family members, particularly children, when the parents are gone.
