YEY!!! An email I just got!! I always get emails from HSUS and ASPCA...happiness! :)  Victory for animal lovers!

President Signs Animal Fighting Bill Into Law
Dear Randi,
I wanted to be the first to share with you some fantastic news (https://community.hsus.org/ct/R1_8q9S1vRhz/). Today President Bush signed the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act into law. This is the culmination of an almost six-year campaign by The Humane Society of the United States and our allies to enact meaningful federal penalties for animal fighting.
The law takes effect immediately. It provides felony penalties for interstate commerce, import and export related to animal fighting activities, including commerce in cockfighting weapons. It will make it much harder for criminals who engage in dogfighting and cockfighting to continue their operations. Each violation of the federal law may bring up to three years in jail and up to a $250,000 fine for perpetrators.
We are fortunate to have had steadfast Congressional leadership on this issue. But this campaign would not have been a success without your tireless efforts. Thank you again to each of you who sent emails, made phone calls, wrote letters and visited your federal legislators on Capitol Hill and in their home districts.
This victory reminds us to never to give up, and that there are rewards for compassionate action and perseverance. Please share this tremendous news (https://community.hsus.org/ct/R1_8q9S1vRhz/) with others and let them know that you had a part in making it happen.

Sincerely,

I've been browsing sites the last several days including yorkie rescue and others. It's amazing to me how bad some people can treat animals. :( That's definitely good news for you Randi.

When I first got Layla from the HSSM...I started to research her breed of dogs. Granted, most people disagree with me anyway...I learned how bad american pits and staffordshire terriers were being treated. I've ALLLLLLLLLLLLWAYS been a big animal lover...but when I learned about dog fighting...damn there's a way to piss me off! lol If I could go to the ASPCA now...I'd drop everything and do it! My dream is to visit them in NYC...but the HSUS does a lot too.

If you ever watch animal rescue shows (NYC, Detroit, TX, etc.), you'll see how bad some of these animals get treated. For a dog to have a collar embedded in his/her neck, is probably one of the worst things you could do...the agony those animals go through. Sometimes...they die with water and food just out of their reach... :(

But people only get off with counseling and slaps on the wrist...punches in the face and MASSIVE fines with a few days in jail would work for me...but...not too many people like that idea! lol

I hope these laws will be followed through here in Ms. Are you sure this law includes all states? I hope so-but-I can't imagine a judge here giving someone that much time for dog-fighting. Even if I think people who are involved should be given to the dogs and let them see what it feels like.

The way I read it, this law doesn't pertain to the actual fighting.

This (http://www.hsus.org/legislation_laws/federal_legislation/cruelty_issues/animal_fighting_law_signed.html) talks a little more about it.

For some reason, I feel like this state isn't going to be strict on it at all. From this site, I've talked to people who hate pit bulls anyway; I don't know if everyone would even care.

Randi, I'm not a fan of pit bulls (no offense) but no animal should be mistreated. It's just plain cruel.

It's so sad...the weaker pit becomes the "punching bag." I've never had any problems with pit bulls...I did have a cat scratch the mess out of me though.

To me animal abuse is probably one of the worst things you could do...hurting an innocent animal...even hurting innocent kids...there's no room in society or on this planet for that! To hell with them!
