Why is Tillie wanting to hide her toys?

At least I think this is what she is wanting to do. I know a dog will hide food for later when they are hungry....but....for the last few days she will carry a toy in her mouth while running around the house whining as though she wants to find a place to hide it, but doesn't know where. LOL she will also try scratching the floor as if she wants to dig a hole and hide it there. Finally she put it in a corner and left it there. Weird huh!

Does anyone else's dog do this?

ours don't do that. they hide treats, in a blanket, but not toys.

i'm not sure what to say to help - sounds cute though :-D

Yell it's cute alright! She has done this now for the last week. Not everyday though.

I wonder if it is b/c my DGD comes over in the AM for me to take her to school. She will play with Tillie and her toys sometimes playing keep away from Tillie, cause she likes to see her jumping to get the toy. But really does a dog feel ownership to a toy? Wouldn't that be like, being stingy and not wanting to share?

I dunno, but aren't dogs smarter now or are we just now giving them a chance to show us, what they know. Which is a lot more than we ever thought. You know just be a yard dog...Come boy, Sit, etc...

They can be very possessive over what they consider "theirs" toys, treats, food etc. My SIL has a mini dachshund and she doesn't like anyone coming near her if she has a treat or a toy.

Well I guess so citygirl, this is the first I have ever seen. I have seen jealousy before in another dog I had.

It most likely that she is just jealous and trying to protect "her" toys...one other thing.. it could be leading up to is a false pregnacy. I had a friend who had an Welsh terrier who did the same thing but got progressively worse. The dog started looking and acting like she was pregnant...even gained weight etc., making a nest so to speak...she noticed one day when she was rubbing the dogs belly that she had milk oozing out the nipples...the dog wasn't that old so my friend got really worried and went in to the vet to have the dog checked on. The vet said the dog was going through a false pregnacy and she would be ok in a couple of weeks. My friend saw the dog trying to nurse a stuffed toy and then clean it as if it were a puppy. I couldn't believe her so I went over and sure enuf you would have thought the toy was her baby. It was about a week and a half of this behavior then she was fine. It was scary though. Who would have thought? Nature works in strange ways sometimes. Strange as it was, it made me sad that the little dog apparently "thought" she had a puppy and did not have one.

Thanks Maggie, I've heard that before too! But Tillie is only about 12 weeks old so...I sure hope that is not what it is. LOL!

Brandi does that...she walks with treats and toys in her mouth and whines also. I do think it's because she's trying to find a good hiding spot and can't! She tries to hide everything from Layla! She even buries things in my clothes and blankets, as well as her kennel. She takes my socks, shoes, bras, ipod, and anything else and hides them in her kennel! lol She has a thing for slippers also!
