2 questions-
1. Anyone that's graduated with a master's, do you know how the heck I'm supposed to wear the cloak thing? You'd think with a master's, something like that wouldn't be that hard to figure out! And is the gown supposed to have extra little wing lookin things on the sleeves? It's not like the undergrad gown.
2. Anyone actually going to USM's graduation ceremonies?

1. the gown is supposed to have extra things on it unless ur getting a BS (which all college is is BS)
2. hopefully not- unless my mom and dad make me

I know it's supposed to have extras... I just couldn't figure out how to make the hood thingy work just right... and the sleeves were just weird. Just wanted to make sure I didn't get a defect! haha And my tassle is blue... guess blue is the psychology color.

The cloak thing is the hood. :) Put it over your head, velvet side up, with the black string hanging down. You may want to wear something with a button in order to hook the string around it (so the hood won't look like it's choking you) or use a large safety pin to secure the string to your dress, shirt, etc. The satin panel that hangs in the back is folded around so those colors are visible. Yes, the master's robe has wings on the sleeves. :)
Yes, I will be there. ;)

Thanks so much Kitty! I just wasn't sure what I was supposed to do with the string on the front... because yes, the thing was choking me when i put it on!!!
I'm sitting on row 3... gonna be odd sitting that close up! They forgot about me for undergrad, and had to put me on the very last row.

Lips, I should have added that if you don't have the hood fixed just right, don't despair... there will be floor marshals from each college in addition to other University personnel there to assist graduates with their regalia.

Congrats, Lips!! What a great day!.
Kitty is right. The last time I marched, I helped several people with their hoods. The trick is getting the lining turned out correctly. (I didn't get to attend my MA commencement, so I rented a cap and gown from the school where I was working, to have pictures made. Wrong hood. When I came to USM, I had to march in two graduations. The first time, I didn't have a hood, so my boss loaned me hers. "Don't worry" she said, "nobody will know the difference." Uh-huh. I had THREE different people come up to me and say, "Wow, I didn't know you went to UCLA!" So the next year I bought my own hood and cap. You can get a used one very reasonably. Now I have my own beautiful WKY one, red & white, and will probably never wear it again the rest of my life.) Yes, your tassel and the velvet band in front represent your field.

PS Please put your hat on so that the board is parallel to the floor. Nothing irks me like seeing caps pushed to the back of the head -- it just looks awful!!

haha, I know- a highschool friend thought she had to look all cute and had the dang thing all the way on the back of her head! I just took some pics with my friend Jean out in front of the USM sign (I didn't wanna be out in the noon heat tomorrow before graduation)... I HAVE to wear mine completely parallel b/c it kept falling off if it was the slightest bit tilted. Need lots of hair pins for tomorrow to keep that sucker on.

I'll be at the 2:30 ceremony.
Cheer loud for your fellow psych (psycho?) folks :)
IHeart, I don't knwo about you and your friend, but they must seperate by sections... because I'm on row 3, and I know that the Phd and Master's folks are ahead of the Bachelors... maybe they seperate by level of degree? Who knows. I'm just pretty damn proud to be wearing a *special* gown :) Makes me feel somewhat accomplished and proud of myself- which is a rare thing.

bachelors sit in the back. then masters candidates all sit infront of them by college and in alphabetical order according to each college. then doctoral candidates sit infront of masters candidates. doctoral candidates do their processional into the coliseum, go accross, then masters cross, then bachelors cross. the bachelors take FOREVER! and you just sit there.
put a safety pin on the string and hook it to the inside of your gown where you want it. then when you zip, hide the string. worked for me.

I'll be there at 2:30 to get my BS. I'm somewhere in Row 3. Finally!
They really don't do a very good job of explaining how this is going to work for those of us who haven't been to a USM graduation before. Would it killed them to have put in a piece of paper saying "You go here, at this time stand up, go here, etc." with the seating card?
I also found it amusing that the University discourages cap tossing. Wouldn't want someone to put an eye out ;)

yeah thats what i thought and im just on row 1 of my section but i really dont get me in seat three and friend with last name of W is seat 10..its very confusing..LOL....maybe its section according to last name....
i agree with you Astra - its very confusing..they act like we've done this before!!! when i turned in all the stuff for degree forms and everything - it was the same way..i had tons of questions and the psych auditor was very rude for the most part....extremely frustrating!!! LOL...
i just have to remember my seating card tomorrow..i know i will forget it if i dont make tons of notes for myself

Congratulations everyone who's graduating... With determination, I'll be there in a few years...
Every year, I watch everyone get their picture made in front of the sign at the rose garden. It's funny when they get a crowd going and people have to get out of each other's shots. Or when someone falls down, which always happens, because someone always has to get up in the landscaping around the sign and then forgets about the bushes after the picture's snapped, and down they go... and they look around and see us laughing at them across the street... ahh. good times, good times...

ok girls... it really is simple.
just go to your seat and sit. the person calling names and announcing colleges will do the rest. you stand when they call your college, you just follow the person in front of you and do what they do. you will be in a line going up to the stage. you will stop and take a picture just before going on stage. when you get on the stage, you had your seating card to the person to the left of the announcer. when he calls your name you walk. you accept your diploma case from Dr. Thames and shake his hand. then you walk to exit the stage. there will be another line to stand in b/c at the foot of the stage you stop and take another picture. after you take that picture, you go back to your seat.
if you aren't first, then you have nothing to worry about. just play follow the leader. :-D

So did everybody get their hoods and hats arranged ok?
LipsofanAngel
05-11-2007, 11:06 PM
yes actually- lol... I got my hood done myself, and then I swear I had at least 10 other people come up to me (strangers) and ask me to do theirs too b/c they said mine looked like it was supposed to!! And my hat was perfectly parallel to the floor :)
Astra
05-11-2007, 11:07 PM
Heh, everyone around me kept sitting on each others' sleeves. After sitting down one time I had each sleeve pinned either under one of the guys or between their back and their chair.
And the hats... oh how I hated the hats. My high school one had to be pinned on too, my hair is just too slick, but geez these things were heavy! A girl in front of me lost hers after she lifted her head just a bit. Thankfully my grandmother had some nice clips to keep mine in place and they worked great.

Well, to get slightly serious for a minute, don't you think it looks messy and careless and very high-school? Like the girl is probably chewing gum and has dark nail polish half-chipped off, and is wearing flip-flops.

The one with the scrollwork printed on a piece of paper tacked under the button on her cap? That was neat looking. There was another in education who had little paper letters that said "I CAN TEACH" on hers.
Yeah, the guy scribbled something on mine too. I couldn't read his handwriting, no idea what it meant or who he was.

The guy likely was with the group doing the graduation photos. They use the seating cards to keep track of the photos. You may not have noticed, but a Southern Style member (gold jacket) was sitting next to the ramp behind the reader. Her job was to keep the cards in order for the photographer.

I was told after the ceremony that at least one University administrator requested the seating information (college, row number, seat number) on this graduate for identification purposes.
While I would never suggest stifling freedom of expression, some expressions are offensive to some and inappropriate in general.
