Think about it, if Wal-Mart goes under where will we all buy stuff?
They put everybody else out of business.

Maybe other smaller retailers will come back but the longer we're addicted to this Chinese bitch's titty, the harder it will be to ween ourselves.
H'burg needs a new quality grocery retailer worse than all those BS chain outlets on 98. We need a new Safeway or Kroger's on the south side of town. Developers don't know what they're missing. The Walmart castle is getting ripe for the breeching.
Two words: Piggly Wiggly
I've always thought that if somebody would open a grocery store on 49 somewhere north of 59, it would make a killing, along with a Dairy Queen in Petal.

Kroger is the bomb here in brandon-
they have a lunch plate for $5, and they always have fresh veggies and stuff all thru the store. the superwalmart is never filled with normal people- allways the ones you don't want to associate yourself with. the kroger is always packed.

So you're saying that Brandon has normal people and Hattiesville doesn't? :smt102

When I started this thread (http://www.myhattiesburg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12825&highlight=ramey%27s) last October, I was told by my "source" that a "quality grocery retailer" was looking to build a store on Hwy. 98.
If you've been out 98 past Canebrake recently, you've seen the site work for the proposed Corner Market has stopped. The "future home of Corner Market" sign is still there, but no ongoing work.
To me, that suggests there could be some validity to my source's information.

I just wish for a Publix... as much as I hate walmart, I will admit- I like the convenience of getting everything I need once for the month in one stop.
Kroger would be nice as well.
And Petal needs a Lenny's or Firehouse Subs. All they have is fried chicken or burgers.

Brookshires is another good chain, they have three stores in the Jackson area. Publix or Kroger would be good too. A superstore of one of these chains is much needed in this area.

I have been on my personal boycott of Wal-Mart since Katrina.
The store on 98 is just an unpleasant shopping experience.
I know I pay more at a store like Corner Market, but at least I can park at or near the front door, which is a convenience I like.
Actually, I buy as many "grocery" items at Target as I can.
Going to two different stores may seem like an inconvenience to some people, but for me it beats going to Wally World.

I miss Publix from when I lived in Florida. At Christmastime they had the best fruitcake ever. Oxymoron, I know, but I liked it.

The Burg used to have a Kroger's back in the early 70's, do you remember why they closed down?

I would much rather go to a smaller store too...even if I have to go to two different stores. The people who are handicapped have one hell of a time finding a place to park...(there is NEVER enuf handicap spaces) NOT ALL handicap people have mobile chairs with which to get around..I either have to park close or go elsewhere...old age and a car wreck has rendered me incapable of doing much walking anymore.
Speaking of parking spaces...it makes me so dang mad to HAVE to go to Walmart and when you get there, there are at least four rows of parking spaces taken up with metal trailers THEY use for storage and then they have acres of lawn and garden stuff taking up the 5 or 6 more rows of spaces! :(
I know what the deal is, they spent too much time moving things around so I couldn't find them. When K-Mart closed the doors Walmart immediately got worse thinking they had it ALL sewed up at last. It's gotten just as financially feasible to go to the larger hardware and grocery stores to me and I can find REAL screws!!!

WHile RevranAL is in aggreeance with a quality grocery in need, not sho it would make it on the southside of town
Rememba that fabalus Albertsons closed its doors, cause it couldn't attract enuff quality shoppers to come round
To shirk the Wal-Mart mentality of most these folks round here, and to be a success
That high end grocery establishment will have to be located near 49/59 or down 98 West

Be warned!!!! Stay away from the meat at walmart!!!! or it will make you into a slimy worm.
This is the slimmest stuff I have ever seen...you can't wash off the slim. I tried and tried. The tastes of their chicken breast is so strong it makes me wonder if it's even chicken or something fake which walmart is getting real good at.
Myself I quit buying meat at walmart 3 years ago.

I have a cousin who was over the purchasing for Sams and Walmart in Gulfport, she told me that ALL there meat is cut and wrapped elsewhere and shipped frozen to the local stores, it is then put out on the counter...people think it is fresh. Once it is defrosted people don't know the difference, buy the meat, take it home and refreeze it...IMO, this is NOT safe...I would much rather go to a store where I can stand there and watch the butcher cut the selection I choose.

That is true, MD. They used to have their own butchers. I don't remember what happened, if they wanted to unionize or what, but they decided to cut them out.

'Tis a shame, isn't it. At one time, one could go shopping at store where you knew the owners name, the bagboy's name, and yes, the bagboy would even carry your bags out to your car if requested. We don't want to support Walmart, because of the whole China thing, which, by the way, is still a COMMUNIST nation. Target, don't get me started, is too, we'll say, French. Albert's was nice while we had it, pricey, but had good variety. Walmart killed them. Corner Market is cool, but pricey, also. Big Star really isn't that bad, but I don't want my wife to get mugged, and I don't want to get a tetnis shot everytime I go there. So where does that leave us? Really, where can we get groceries, from an American owned and operated store, that is at least regionally based? I'm not sure. Maybe Mordica's?

I swear I'm going to neg rep the next person who says Target is french...
maybe you'd prefer to shop at the corner store at on 49 across from the Beverly... nothing 'pansy' about that dirty hole in the wall...
Wal-Mart is about as utilitarian as you can get and still be a major player in retail. I like that Target takes the time to try to cover up the big-box store that it is.
I'm sick of Wal Mart too. I have b*tched about them for a long time, but these days I'm driving past them to Corner Market more and more often. Unlike during my college days, I actually have the money to spend the little extra for it.
I hate to sound like a snob, but to me the worst thing about Wal Mart is the people you have to deal with. The Petal Wal Mart is hell on earth. You can count on the same characters being there every time. For example, there is ALWAYS a lady (sometimes a man) in a "sit and shop" cart whose ass is wider than the aisles. I suspect that's the only reason she can't walk, and she always manages to be in front of me in line, with her cart of Nutty Buddies and chocolate milk. Also, there is always someone who can't keep up with their bad a$$ kids, and an old lady who tries to mow me down with her cart in the produce section.
It's too fast paced. I like Corner Market because I can take my time and I never see those characters in there.

MSQueen, I was once a food inspector for vendor's supplying the U.S.Army. I would turn them down in a heartbeat over their meat products. If I can smell the meat counter when I enter a store, I will not buy meat there. I have bought ground sirloin or round (can't handle hamburger because its full of everything from floor scraps to backstrap) at WM. It looked nice and red on the outside, but this was only about 1/4 inch with the inside being brown! Also, I don't like the meat grinder they use because the ground meat always looks like little worms. Watch "fresh" chicken too. If there is a lot of water in the package its been frozen and thawed! YUK!
