I went cell only one time. It was back while my hubby and I were dating and before they have such a thing as an unlimited plan. My bill averaged $300 a couple of months. Not good. LOL

Now we have a land line and a cell phone. I'm not sure if we will have a land line when we build our house though.

I've been landline-less for about 5 years now.

I couldn't stand not having my landline. Plus I wouldn't want to pay what the cell bill would be. Thirteen year old females talk for a lot of minutes. I use the cell phone at home to talk to hubby and the boys since we're in the same network and it's free. Otherwise, when I'm at home, I use the regular old cordless.

No home phone for 2 years... My home service was out and I called bell south on a monday.. The lady said that the next available service call was the following tuesday.. I said WTF? I said thats 9 days from now and my home phone is not working.. She said no thats only 7 working days we dont work on the weekends? I said WTF again.. You are telling me that you have a customer without service and you are not working on the weekend to keep the phone back in service?

Well I told her never mind turn the phone off and hopefully everyone with bellsouth will go to cell service so you can have everyday off not just weekends..

I still get a bill from them for 2.13 cents....

I would be cell-phone only but I still have a long distance (Mississippi) cell phone number so I have a landline phone that is local so that people who live in Louisville can call me without calling long distance. Only now, my work gave me a local cell phone, so I am considering getting rid of the landline. No one even really has that number except for telemarketers or people dialing wrong numbers.

I would go cell only but then I would miss you wonderful folks.

We went cell-phone only when we sold our house. We have plans to build a house when prices go down. But
I don't think I will get a land-line then, either.

When Katrina hit, the phone company did not show up to replace the land-lines for nearly 90 days...the day they came to string up wire I told them NOT to string any to my house...we would just be using cell phones. I found out that I am saving about $50.00 a month. We hardly ever used the land line anyway...we didn't really need it cause we have the computers on the cable bill.

BellSouth is lucky that anybody around here still uses them. That was possibly the worst service I've ever seen. I do appreciate the actual linemen out working extremely hard, it was just the people you tried to talk to who were so impossible. I TRIED to be understanding, that it was an unprecedented situation, but after a while . . .

We have kept our landline at home because we have a fax machine.

The monthly bill runs somewhere between $25-$30. The basic line rate.

Is there another way besides a landline to operate a fax machine?

There wasn't a phone line hooked up to my place when I moved in, and since I only live in it part-time anyway, I just didn't need a land line. I have cable for TV and internet and a cellphone, so it's worked out just fine for me.

what is this "landline" thing that you speak of?

Not usually a regular fax machine, but there are programs and online services that can take a document (either a file or from your scanner) and transmit it to a fax number.

I got rid of my landline in Feb 2005 and haven't missed it. I only had it because I needed it for the internet, but when it was slightly damp outside, my phone was dead. It was frustrating, so I started doing the math. With expanded basic cable, cable internet, and my cellphone, I'm actually saving about $20/month.

Good thread for me at this time. I'm being forced against my will to get a cell phone. I don't want to be reached anytime it's convenient for someone. It might not be convenient for me. Besides, the quality of the cell phone lacks a lot and I have hearing problems from hunting as a boy. I did learn to switch ears and it's much better, DUH. My friend is making me get a cell phone because I'll be on the highway for so long when I come down to Hbg. Bless her heart, I appreciate her worrying but cell phones are my bane. Came within 12"-14" of getting me killing in a car accident. 10 years ago. Maybe that was a car phone back then. Anyway, I was driving and on the phone. When I'm relaxing in a restaurant I don't want to hear a cell phone. I guess I just get cranky about some things. Heck, I'll be at home doing something and won't answer the phone simply because it's not convenient at the time. That's what "Leave a message" is for. I just refuse to be attached at the hip to drugs, cigs, alcohol or phones. Besides, I'm home most of the time. Granted there have been times I needed a cell phone, but I went into business and asked to use the phone. I'm soooooo lo-tech.

My mom is the same way, she hated getting a cell phone, but my dad insisted. Now when she travels she has it with her, it's turned off, but she has it in case she needs it.

I, on the other hand, haven't had a land line since about 2001. Last divorce, I moved into an apartment, it was just me, no reason to have a phone that I wasn't around half the time, costing me money. I've not had a problem being cell only, it also seems to keep telemarketers from calling.

I had the same problem when my wife was in the hospital. They said they would be out in 5 days. I explained the problem and it didnt make any difference so I got a cell phone. Now I have to have a landline for the internet plus my wife hates cells and she rules????

Dollfus! Shame on you trying to drive and talk on the phone at the same time! :) I have to pull over to talk, else wise I would be up a big oak or pine tree! I was a little hesitate getting a cell phone too... I am not new gadget savy but now I wouldn't trade it for anything. I like having the option of making a call IF and WHEN I want to. I have a good plan that is not really expensive and I never have minutes I have to worry about etc. I have found that the Nokia phones seem to be the best ones. I just got a new one about 3 or 4 months ago...the battery in my old one died and the phone was so old, I could get a new phone for less than what I could order a battery for the old one.

The new phone even has GPS...not that I need that particularly because I have ONSTAR in my car, but it is nice to have if I am in our truck or with someone who doesn't have ONSTAR or a GPS phone.

I also hate people's cell phones going of in restaurants etc...I keep mine turned off.

Oh yeah. Wreck wasn't my fault. I was talking at a red light. The light turned green and I went, withhout looking. Young girl was running the red light at between 45 and 50 mgh. No skid marks except mine. T-Boned me at the firewall of my car. Even at that, I was knocked unconscience. People who drive and talk just think they are alert to what's going on around them but they aren't. It should be outlawed. A lot car related things should be outlawed for safety, but they aren't. Driving and talking leads the list though. I'm getting mine for emergencies only. I think that's a good idea. I like the idea of kids having them too, for the same reason. Not in school though.

Don't mind the talking near as much as someone trying to text and drive. Maybe I'm just too slow with typing on a cell phone but I tend to forget what I'm trying to say for worrying about the spelling. DON'T text me- if you have something to say just call me.

I think it's kinda funny that one of my best friends won't get a cell phone because she says that she doesn't want to constantly be available to people, much the same as dollfus. Then she says that it's frustrating to call people who do have cellphones and they don't answer. She doesn't get that for a lot of people, a cell phone is just like a regular phone. If I don't want to answer it, I don't answer it. If I want to turn it off, I turn it off. Voicemail is a lovely, lovely thing.

(and dollfus, my Sner insisted on getting me my first cellphone after I had a slight meltdown on the road...in the middle of nowhere. It's a long story, but it was pretty bad at the time. She no longer wanted me out there without some means of communication, which is strange because she sent me driving across the country by myself at 16, licensed 3 weeks, with just a calling card. What good is a calling card...or a cellphone for that matter...going to do you when you're in the middle of sheep-herder country in Wyoming? :smt102)

LOL! You'd do much better to just stand on the side of the road and yell for one. They might hear that because there sure as hell isn't a cell tower out there. :smt118
