Ok guys, I had a sad day this past Sat. I had to put her down. My tried and true Red Dot 5000 spinning reel has seen her better days. I really like the Red Dot reels. A guide from Hopedale turned me onto them about 3 years ago and I bought one. Love the reel, but it's time for a new one.
Any suggestions? I like the Red Dots' but, I am not sure that I won't try something new. I've always fished Shimano's before, and may go back. But, I've heard good things about the new Pflueger's and the Fin-nor's.
This will be my primary redfish reel, looking to fish about 17lb mono line.

I guess you didn't notice that I'm from Perry County, nobody in Perry can afford a $500 fishing reel.

Buy the Penn 440ss it's a good match to your 5000. If you like to ebay try to get your hands on one of the older discontinued Z models. I am hell on tackle, I have had a 440ss now for about 8 years and it's been through anything and everything you can imagine. I have got a 420ss that I have had for about 14 years.....truly worth the 50 bucks I spent on it back then. The only thing I have found I disliked about it is the bail springs will go out after a long time....(quick fix for about 8 bucks). Spend the 70-80 bucks on the penn, it's worth it in my book.

FB - I have a couple of Stradics (which I dearly love because they are strong and smooth), but my 'other' spiining reels are Okuma's. They are a little lower in price but I'm getting really good results in performance for the buck. Very smooth and tough. You ought to check them out!

I have a couple of buddies that have okuma's and they say they are pleased with them. Guess I just stick with what has worked for me over the years. I did get one of the new mitchell spinning reels last christmas. It seems to be able to hold it's own, but the thing is I have so much tackle and reels that my wife threatened me with my life awhile back if I came to the house with anymore new stuff...She Really keeps an eye on my stuff now. I had to convince her the other day that my new 6500c and my older 5500c ambassadeurs conceived my new 4600c3!!!! (which I actually bought from a fella here at work that didn't like it for 25 bucks and it's brand new.) :smt023I told her that they had been sittin' in the rod-rack so long without gettin' used that it was just bound to happen....then I ran for my life!:)
