It was God's punishment for....Oh...I just can't do it....I have my limits.....no....I shouldn't....
(Help me, Lord...I want to make a real smart-ass, cutting remark about Falwell, but I know I shouldn't....give me strength)

Now, I'm a Christian, but Falwell was full of crap about a lot of stuff. NOT trying to trample on a man's grave, but he was off base of a number of things. Feel free to groan away.

p.s. yeah, he probably did eat himself to death. (that sounds so wrong)

There's an intense discussion about Falwell's ministry on a church blog I read. Most of the posters are traditionalist Anglican/Episcopalians and have little in common with Falwell's theology. However, a number of posters have pointed out that for all his political activity and things-he-shouldn't-have-said, he was an active, caring pastor of a large, thriving congregation. He continued to preach every Sunday, perform weddings, conduct funerals, and "be there" for his people. This is in sharp contrast to other politically active preachers who say outrageous things and never get their hand called. The names Sharpton and Jackson come to mind. With the exception of the one horrible remark about 9/11, did Jerry Falwell ever say anything to compare to Sharpton in the Twana (sp) Brawley case, or in the Duke Univ case, or in many others?

He said AIDS was God's punishment for homo's.....He said Teletubbies were queer....those are just two that come to mind.....I'm sorry the man is dead.....but the living Jerry Falwell promoted himself as much as he promoted anything....He made a lot of dough being a sweet, caring pastor....I don't see how anybody could ever take him seriously, but millions did...I can only hope that he had good intentions behind the venom he spewed....Again, sorry he passed away, and I'm sure he will be missed by family, friends, and followers, but my Chrisitanity and his didn't ever seem to mesh...

Falwell is intimately tied up in my childhood...as are Swaggert and Roberts. There are large chunks missing, but I do remember watching him on television, listening to him preach, bowing my head when it was time to pray, waiting waiting waiting for something. At one point in time, my grandparents' fondest wish was for me to attend Liberty. I fell far short of that mark.
He was a comfort, and all of his buffoonery aside, he spoke to people I care(d) about, so...
peaceful journey, rest well.

God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve.
-- Rev Jerry Falwell, blaming civil libertarians, feminists, homosexuals, and abortion rights supporters for the terrorist attacks of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, to which Rev Pat Robertson (http://www.positiveatheism.org/hist/quotes/revpat.htm) agreed, quoted from John F Harris, "God Gave US 'What We Deserve,' Falwell Says," The Washington Post (September 14, 2001)

He probably had good intentions... but the main intention was to fill his pockets.

I hate to break it to you guys, but people don't go to hell for saying stupid or wrong stuff. Which ought to be a comfort to all of us. As for the pocket filling, you're thinking of Jim Bakker. Falwell did his fund raising on behalf of his church and Liberty University. I don't recall any financial scandals associated with him.
I'm not going to spend any more time defending a person who, although he was a brother in Christ, had many opinions I do not share. I do think it's interesting to see the extent to which he is being demonized, and to note that no one commented on the difference between him and Sharpton/Jackson.

I still hold that politicians and preachers should not be one and the same. Preach it in the pulpit, not City Hall.

I'm sorry I wasn't more specific Hermione. The point of my post was that Falwell's comments and antics were just as, and sometimes more, ridiculous than those of Sharpton/Jackson....I don't see a large difference between any of them....All shamless self-promoters any way you slice it...He was a black eye on Christianity as far as I'm concerned. Again, in private, he may have been a great guy and I hope he's singin with Jesus tonight.....Not my place to say if he's in heaven or hell...

I didn't mean by anybody on this board in particular; I was actually thinking of the press coverage. Sorry, that was very unclear.

Jerry Falwell -- Say Hello to Ronald Reagan!
by Ann Coulter
"Despite venomous attacks and overwhelming pressure to adopt the fashionable beliefs of cafe society, Falwell never wavered an inch in acknowledging Jesus before men. Luckily, Jesus' full sentence, quoted at the beginning of this column is: "All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved."

I have read that Falwell made careful preparations for a leadership transition after his death to his sons at both Thomas Road Baptist Church and at Liberty University.
Now I ask, how could Falwell decide the leadership transition at a Baptist church? Isn't that what caused the split (at least partly) between Dean Register and Temple Baptist?
