Does anyone know anything about skin conditions with dogs? Brandi (my jack) sometimes gets really dry flaky skin on her back and loses hair in that spot. She doesn't have fleas, but itches it a lot...she lays on her back and actually squirms on the floor to scratch it...she even whines while she does it. Anyone know anything about that?

randi, I had that problem with one of my WFT years ago....after a trip to the vet, I found that my dog had what is called a "hot spot." It was caused from her eating too much high protein dog food (I was feeding Purina Hi-Pro at the time) and it being so hot. I changed to a different dog food and kept her extra cool until she healed up and things were fine after that...
She may also be allergic to something. You may want to get one of the specialty shampoos to wash her in... Most terriers are highly apt to get the dry flaky skin and have skin problems....lots of itching etc...

First thought that comes to mind, is are you using a flea control like frontline or advantix? Those are symptoms frontline or advantix have.
If you want, here is a link to (http://www.globalpaw.com/)a dog forum I visit. You can find lots a help on any specific breed.

kramer has dry skin that sometimes flakes (esp when grooming). just take a fish oil tablet, bust it open and squirt in on their food. this will knock it out and give them a very shiny, healthy coat. i do this every morning for kramer and nahla.
