Okay, so I'm getting into this 'online' gaming scene. I'm new, I still don't know my head from my butt about it, okay? Now, let's say I'm sitting on a network, I connect to the game server and I join in a game. We start playing, everybody's having fun, then bam, a box pops up on my screen saying Connection lost: lost connection to server. My question is, could it be something set on the network that I'm on, i.e., the LAN admin doesn't want anyone playing while on the job? I can connect and play for about 1 minute or so, and then I lose connection, everytime. I haven't tried it on another network yet, but was just wondering.

Aren't you on a modem?

At home, yes, but during the day, I'm 'out and about', we'll say.

Some of my customers give me permission to use their networks.

So, your on a wireless or wired network when this happens?

And what kind of server are we talking about? Game developer's server, or a person running their own server?

I'm on a wireless, and it's a game developers server, Steam, if that sounds familiar.

Ok, so I didn't know Steam had their own servers. I thought that was a service to help you connect to other servers? Do you pick the server you want to connect to from a list?

Yes, I pick from a list, I don't think they are Steam servers, but Steam is a service, like you said, I'm sorry. It doesn't matter which server I pick either. I was playing guys from UT earlier, then UK, then Chicago, etc. Each time I'd connect the 'their' server, we'd play for about a minute and I'd loose connection.

Well, I'd pick one that has a ping lower than 100. If it still happens, then you probably have a problem with the strength of the wireless network. What kind of signal strength are you getting for the network?

Right now I have "Excellent" for strenth, and I pick the servers with "latency" of less than 100.

What controls how you connect to the wireless network, windows or another program?

Windows, and they allow me to connect to their network via MAC addressing approval.

Hmm, well, maybe someone else will have some ideas. I have never had this happen to me on a wireless network. Even some where I'm only getting 40% signal strength. I might try updating drivers, or checking support at the wireless manufacturer's site.

Thanks, that's what I'll try. I've got access to another WAP just down the road, I might try it over there on the way home, just to see how it works. That will tell me if it is LAN related or not.

Okay, I tried it 'hardwired' into the network instead of wireless, same results, I can play for about 30-45 seconds and then it says it looses connection.
