I gotta boat with a 90 Mercury on it, it seems the 'powerpack' has fried. Has anyone ever had to get one replaced? What kinda money am I looking at?

Not a cheap part!

You can join this discussion board and ask questions about your engine also. It may be something other than a power pack. I have posted questions on it and received some very helpful responses. Good luck!

Have you checked the plugs for spark, has it been sittin' up? Carb float is probably stuck. If you have fire to both plugs it's probably carbs. It may be just a bad coil. Now if the stator is bad get ready to drop a little cash.

I've always bought Johnsons, but a couple of years ago I had a Honda 9.9 completely won me over. great little engines. Katrina got it with the sailboat.

The quality of their motorcycles is what sold me on the Honda. I put 180,000 mi on a Shadow 700, without a rebuild or major repair.

They are all good motors, well mostly, the problem I have with the Suzuki's and the Yamaha's is their water intake get's stopped up too much when fishin' in the marsh. If I fished the marsh alot I would get a commercial motor in a Johnson. I don't know much about the newer Bombardier motors though. The old johnson's and evinrudes have alot bigger cooling systems and you get clogged up less. They aren't as smooth running as the 4strokes nor are they very economical. Now a Mercury should be run wide-ass open all the time. It's just how they are made to run. I guess it's safe to say fit the motor to your style of fishin'.

I have a 1990 johnson and I loved it until about 3 weeks ago. Started stalling out on me and I can't seem to find the problem. Have ruled out most electrical problems by replacing them. Carbs are clean and tuned, so I don't know where to go now. How about the new evinrude e-techs? I have heard some good things about them. Anyone have any first hand info?

Replace your fuel pump with a rebuild kit. I had a 90model 25 horse johnson and it did the very same thing...went thru all electrical excepth the stator. Bought the fuel pump rebuild on ebay for 8 bucks. When I took the pump apart the back bladder had about a 3/8" tear in it from the resonator slappin' it from all those years. Put the kit in and it runs like a champ. Sold the boat back to my little brother and he has fished the hell out of it the past couple of months with no more probs.
I have heard alot of good things about the E-tecs. The only bad thing I have heard is you have to refinance your home and sell your wife and kids to purchase one.:smt118

Ok, couple of questions before I rebuild the fuel pump.

1. When you had this problem did your motor crank and idle without
problems? My motor will idle all day long and cranks like a champ.
2. My motor will run at a low speed but stalls when I try to accelerate.
Did your's do this also?
3. Were you able to get your motor up to full throttle sometimes. The
other day I was able to get mine up and at full speed. I made a trip
around the lake and thought it was just some trash in the carb. After
fishing it stalled on me again going back to the boat launch. Never
could get it to throttle up again.

LIke I said I checked the carbs and they were clean. I replaced the plugs, wires and coil pack because was looking kind of shabby. I'm very frustrated and just want to get the thing going again.

1. Yes.
2. Yes
3. Try pinchin the fuel line after it's runnin' with some vise grips. Give it full throttle and see if it opens up for a few seconds and then cuts off when it runs out of fuel. This is what mine did. (do this on the water)
4. Did you check the Floats. The carbs may be clean but need a new rebuild. (I take mine to get em' rebuilt because I suck at it) Sounds like you got a needle/seat deal goin' on or a sticky float on one of your carbs.

I found some info on the web. I did all the tests that the guy recommended. No spark at plugs, getting fuel, power to pack, but none coming out of it.........guess I gotta drop some cash.

Yeah, I would take it to somebody, gotta know what your doin when you go under that flywheel..Maybe somebody might have another idea. But no spark is a bad deal. What hp and year model is it?

It's a 90 hp on a 95 model boat, but I think the engine is line an '89 or something.
