From today's NYTimes (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/03/travel/03pracdog.html)...
Fortunately, Cobbler is a really good traveler. There have been a few puking incidents a couple of hours into the trip, but other than that, she's a happy dog when she gets in the car.

nahla and kramer love to go in the car. they understand "ready?" "go" and "ride"!! nahla used to stand in between the driver and passenger seats until kramer figured out that he fits perfectly on my center console. he now will either stand with his front two paws on the console or he will sit on it. so nahla got kicked out of her spot.

yes, chick understands "ready" and "go", but her favorite is "bye-bye". i have a bed she sleeps in on the passenger seat unless the sun is shining on her. then, she will usually just get in the back seat and try to sleep. however, when the blinker is on, she pops up and looks out the windows.

Chick usually beats me to the car after I say the magic words.

BooBoo doesn't seem to like to ride. She whines and cries just about the whole time she is in the car. I took her up in Simpson Co. one time to pick up a big sack of green peanuts and after about 20 minutes she settled down a little but if I braked she was up like a jack in the box! Sometimes she will stand and look out the windows and she barks like crazy at who ever or whatever she sees! You soon get a headache! :(

For really long car rides, you may want to ask your vet if a small dose of Benadryl or some other calming agent can be used.
There's a natural solution called Rescue Remedy. I haven't used it but I have read it works too.
I gave my 8 lb. Schnauzer 1/2 a capsule for a bee sting two weeks ago per vet orders. She did just fine. No passing out or anything like that.
