Hey, We're going to be moving to Hattiesburg in mid July and would like to start visiting churches as soon as possible! We have a good church home here in Vicksburg, but with us only being able to go home every so often to visit, we would like to find one down there... We like to work with the youth group and children so anything that has a pretty active youth and childrens ministry is great! We are Baptist and would like to find a good Baptist church. Any suggestions and types of churches are welcome!! We will try as many as we can till we find one we like!

When we lived in Hatti, we went to First Baptist. Now that we moved to Petal, we are looking for a good church.

If you will be living on the southside of town or out in the county, I would suggest Dixie Baptist Church.

Doc, it is on Oak Grove Rd.

Main Street Baptist Church is a medium sized church and friendly.
On 98 West right across from Wesley Hospital.
Also The Hattiesburg American has churches.
Also, I have gone to Bellevue Baptist Church out on 98 West and I liked the people and the cozy feeling I had there.

You got your pick... There's a Baptist church on every corner. There's more Baptist churches than there are Subway's and McDonald's.
You got your pick, too... from ultra high tech in your face mega screen to falling out in the aisle under the spell of Jesus!

I have friends who go to 38th Ave Baptist...that is where I plan on going too. It is a med. size church and very laid back.

This person asked a sincere question. I know you have no respect for religion, but at least have respect for a sincere person.
You don't know what you're talking about.
There's nothing insincere in my post. It's true. Any flavor of Baptist you want, we have. Is that an incorrect statement?
I'm helping the person out... if you don't like it, put me on ignore.

Providence Baptist Church in the Eatonville community is where we go. They have a great Youth Ministery. We go on mssion trips to Nicaragua every summer. I have gone every year since 1999, but my Daddy passed away on April 11 so I cannot go this year. Rev. Michael D. Lee is our Pastor. Rev. Kent Shepherd is our Youth Pastor. Try it out, you might like it & we would love to have you.:)

Give me a break CB. You compared churches to fast food establishments and then implied that Christians in some churches are under some sort of brainwashed "spell."
Whatever. The post speaks for itself.
Give ME a break... You're so damned high and mighty on some subjects. If you'll use all your years of education to examine the post I made, I compared the NUMBER of churches to the NUMBER of fast food restruants. In doing so, I made it clear to someone from outside Hattiesburg that Hattiesburg LOVES CHURCH and FAST FOOD.
AND for the Jesus spell, you've seen those people on TV falling out when that weirdo touches them... I'm not buying it at all. Maybe the original poster does, maybe you do, but there's a fair amount of posters on here who, although church going Christians, think it's a bunch of hooey (thanks dollfus). I don't know what else to call it... we have fainting spells, then there's the Jesus spell...

To be fair, Doc, CB is giving just as much respect to religion as you have to Dale Beavers in the elections thread, or to the posters in the evolution threads.

Carterville Baptist in Petal is a really nice church. They have a great preschool and youth ministry. The service is upbeat with guitar and drum accompaniment. They also have carterville cafe on wednesdays that allow you to take bible study classes that you are interested in. for example I am in Dr James Dobsons bringing up boys class on wednesday. always a wednesday meal from 5-6 then classes at 6:15 great time to get to know people. also if our sunday school has classes for every group married, non married, married with young kids, married with older kids, etc
love to see you drop by if you'd like too
also the service is very nice and Pastor Hogan is great. I really like this church after checking out several as the message is about Gods love. While he does have some harsh word on some things its definitely not a church that tries to scare you into believing which unfortunately I have been to a few that do (not here in the area though mostly in Louisiana)

I sort of know what CB is talking about. He may have confused Baptists with some non-denominational Christian churches. Nita goes to a little country Baptist church in Travelers Rest, SC, called Renfrew Baptist. They've been to Gautier a few times to help rebuild churches. But they are a foot stopmin' band playing hand-raising type. I'm too much of a traditionalist for that. Don't want to sing Amazing Grace to drums, guitar and trumpet. Maybe that's why they never sing songs I've ever heard of. Contemporary Christian music. (shiver).

We're moving to Hattiesburg and unlike dollfus, we'd love a baptist church with contemporary music and a great youth group for our high school son. Anyone have a suggestion?
Thanks!

I don't live in H'burg anymore, and I wasn't Baptist when I did live there....but, I've heard the old pastor of Temple Baptist started a new church....Crossroads or Cross Point or Cross-sumtin'.....I think there was some discussion about it on here one time....

By nature, I'm not a contemporary music guy either.....but, when I went with the youth group from my church to a retreat a couple of weeks ago, I saw how much they enjoyed and how much they got out of the Christian rock band that performed at all of the assemblies...
It reminded me of somethin' I heard a preacher say several years ago...."I don't like drums and guitars in the church, but if drums and guitars will bring people to church who otherwise wouldn't be here, then I am for it..."
I'm a member of a church right now that does not have a contemporary service of any kind and many of the influential members are strongly opposed to a contemporary service....These same people wonder why young people aren't coming to church and why membership is declining.
Has anyone ever been to Carterville, in Petal? After years of not going to church (for me, anyway) we've been going there recently.
The only complaint I can think of about the contemporary music is that the songs change every single week, and they're not as easy to follow along w/ if you don't know all the lyrics. Even with the lyrics on the screen, most people have a hard time. Then it turns from everyone singing and getting something out of it to just the music leader is singing, and he does these spontaneous things in the middle of songs that throws everyone off. It frustrates me to no end.
Since people don't know the songs they're just standing there waiting for it to be over. How is that worship?? To make it worse, they do LOTS more songs than the average church, so this makes up most of the service.
I'm not against having contemporary music in church. I think there's a place for it. I just think that it's the job of the music leader to lead the songs in such a way that the congregation can follow along. Even though I like variety and want to hear something new from time to time, I don't think every service has to have three or four songs that nobody has ever heard of. Besides, half of the songs aren't even worship songs. It just sounds like something he ripped off from K-Love. Would it really hurt to throw in a few hymns? The contemporary stuff has a place, but so does the old stuff. Let's get real-- "Just as I Am" will break ya down!!!
I keep going because I like the preacher there. I get a lot more out of his sermons than I ever have at any other church. I simply tolerate the music just to get what I need.

Would this be a long drive if we lived in the Oak Grove area? I'd like a church that is close by.
Thanks
PS It doesn't even have to be a baptist church, we like non-denominational churches too.

Do you like to jump up on the pews like I do and scream "FREE FOTNO_!!!!!!"?
I like doing that during the service when the pastor is going off in a tangent and nobody can follow what he is saying. I don't like it though when the pastor says bowling is a sin and I can't drink anymore Coke. That is when I quit going back and write letters to my Congressman that he won't answer because of the Seperation of Church and State and stuff and you know....election and all that is near and stuff.......NO BOWLING!!!! They serve beer there! Run away.....:smt102:smt103

I went to the site and it was looking good until I saw that baptism is a requirement for membership. On top of that, they require baptism in a baptist church, that means my baptism in an assemblies of God church wouldn't count in their eyes. Though I believe we should be baptized, the act of baptism doesn't save you. Is this a Southern Baptist church?
Thanks.
