On I-10 headed toward Gulfport from Ocean Springs there used to be a sign that said

Come on over and bring the kids --God

So, did God want you to bring them to church or to heaven? I was just waiting for some psycho to murder his whole family and to reference the sign, saying he was just bringing them over to visit God.

I have seen several cute ones on local churches arounds here: The best vitamin for a Christian is B1! Forbidden fruit gets us in many jams! You think that it's hot here???! There is no air condtioning in Hell! No Jesus, no peace. Know Jesus, know peace! God is like Scotch tape--you can't see him, but you know he's there! God is like Dial soap--Aren't you glad you have Him? Don't you wish everybody did? God is like Coke--He is the Real Thing! God is like Sears--He has everything! The cutesey tootsie church signs irk me. Some of them really trivialize Christianity. It does nothing to draw people in to worship. What's the point?

I think the writer of the blog that Chaz linked to above made some excellent points about how they trivialize spirituality, belief, fellowship, salvation, etc. It seems to be self defeating. The purpose of a church is supposed to be to reach people and enhance their spiritual lives, among other things. Do they think that a non-Christian who drives by and sees "God is like Dial soap" is going to suddenly have an epiphany? Gee, those Baptists (or Methodists, or whoever) sure are clever! Think I'll change my entire ideology and join up with them! Dial soap! Ha ha ha!

All a church sign needs to have on it is the time people should show up if they want to come, or perhaps a message or Bible verse that is inspiring or encouraging, but not some smart-assed little quip.

I'm with you, mac... as a practicing pagan, those 'cutesy' church signs just make me groan and laugh at Christians. I mean, really, who are they talking to? Members who've left their church? I know they're not trying to outreach to non-Christians using those signs.... then again, they hand out stupid little tracts hoping it'll scare you to jesus... so, maybe they ARE trying to get you to convert.

My favorite... a man on his knees can't stumble... *cough*Have you ever tried walking or running around on your knees? You're going to stumble, buddy, you're going to stumble....
