They're going to have to do more than expand in order for me to shop there much. Prices are way to high. Can't wait for Gander Mountain to get here.

I really see problems for them once Gander Mountain gets here. Although, maybe the competition will cause prices on sporting goods to go down in the area.

Is Gander Mountain going to be where the old K-Mart was located?

Yes so do I. I tell you what I want from a sporting goods store in this area. I want a good selection of saltwater and freshwater fishing tackle. I can't understand why Big Bucks will not expand their saltwater section. We're only an hour from the Gulf of Mexico and many people fish there from our area. You have to go to Academy sports to get what you need many times if you're saltwater fishing.

I didn't realize Big Buck Sports was under different ownership.

Any idea if the current owners are locals?

I know the owner's mother. Yes, he is local. He also owns Shadow Ridge Golf Course and something else. He had a big write-up in the Hattiesburg American a while back.

Big Buck expanding? Yet another reason to charge outragous prices. I, for one will glad to see some competition and variety coming to town.

Every time I tried to shop Big Buck I got the impression they was doing me a favor letting me come in the door. They also act like everyone is a shop lifter.

Yeah I felt like that too...I recently met one of the girls who works there (Tessie) she is really nice. If the rest of the staff was as cheerful, they might would have more happy customers.

Somebody told me that Charlie Price owned Big Bucks. Is that right? Or is Big Bucks a national chain? Anybody know Charlie (Charles) Price? HHS Class of about 1962

I quit shopping at big buck a long time ago. Their staff is very rude & their prices are generally 10 to 20% over msrp. I don't know why anyone would shop there.

Big Bucks is very expensive but they do stand behind anything they sell no matter if it's a 9mm or a Nice Head tennis racket. If I have ever had a problem they fix it no BS.

Big buck sucks. I'll stand by that. pay too much if you want to. I've been in there more than once to look at a particular firearm & was treated with either total disregard or with open contempt. A while (decade) ago I wanted to check out a Ruger P series .45, When I asked the counter guy (after waiting forever to be acknowledged as a customer) for some snap caps he said he didn't know what I was asking for (after providing them to a previous customer) then refused to allow me to field strip the piece, or to strip it for me. Then refused to even let me handle the piece. They lost a sale. Big Buck Sucks.......Oh...Wait....Did I mention that Big Buck Sucks?

It's kind of the same since K-Mart left and Walmart has the market to do with as it chooses. Not the stock to fit the customer'e needs, the help knows zilch about what is on the shelves and it bothers them if you wake them up and ask for something.
The Pro Bass in Pearl is a nice shop but much like LL Bean and Gander Mountain, their products are very expensive.
I have shopped at Big Bucks but have not made the effort to stop there much in recent years. Pre-Katrina I bought most of my things in New Orleans.
I had heard and hoped that there would be an Academy Sports opening in Hattiesburg. Academy Sports rules!
Anybody heard anything lately on this?

I wanted an Academy also. I haven't heard anything else on them opening. I didn't know that Gander Mountain was expensive. I've never been to one of their stores.

Yeah, the new owner is Nick Welsh from Laurel. He's a big USM booster and owns several other business, Shadow Ridge, a development company and a couple of oil field service companies.

He's a big USM booster too, which is a plus for me, but they are still over priced. Nick's son Darren Welsh played baseball at USM a few years ago.
