Erasing Tattoos, Out of Regret or Simply to Get a Fresh Canvas (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/17/us/17tattoo.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin)

...For help, she turned to Dr. Tattoff, a chain of tattoo removal stores where nurses use lasers in a series of treatments to break down tattoo pigments. Dr. Tattoff is part of a growing industry catering to people who may not have thought about the implications of “forever” the first time around.

Removing tattoos is costly, uncomfortable and time-consuming, but the affinity for body art is so strong that some people say they do it to clear space to tattoo all over again....

I have five tattoos these days, and I'm in the planning stages of another one that I anticipate being a rather large complement to one that I already have, as well as an etching that is also a complement to that same tattoo.

None of my tattoos were done on a whim, nor were they done without some serious thought about what I wanted the art to signify. "Forever" was very much a part of the thought process...and I have to say that I've had the oldest one for 13 years, and I like it as much now as I did then. I also can't imagine getting rid of a tattoo to free up space for something else. Seems very strange to me.

I don't have any tats because I can't think of anything that I want to be on my body for the rest of my life. When I was in high school, lots of people were getting stupid tattoos of tweety birds and tazmanian devils and peace signs and other cartoonish things. Nothing says "I was drunk at junior college" like a neon blue sun above your butt crack.

I know a few people who have since had them removed, but tattoo removal is really not that effective. You can still tell that something was there.

I watch Miami Ink on tv sometimes, and they are really good. There is a huge difference between what they do and what you would get somewhere in Hattiesburg--or better yet, LA Body Art in Mobile!!!! Anyone ever see Tattoo Chat?!?!

I can't quite picture having the same tattoo that other people might get. I know that I was never more pissed than when I found that someone else had been given *my* tattoo. My drawing. My idea about color and shading and placement. It wasn't like it was the tattoo artist's flash or a stock pic. That was my work, and he was just the vehicle I used to have it put on my body.

I don't have any tattoos. As an ex "motorcycle enthusiast" my friends were always asking when I was gonna get some ink, but it just wasn't what i was into. I've seen some great tats, but the truth is, I have never seen a single tat on a chick that looked better than unadorned skin.

I see them all the time, but I don't ever see myself getting one. I just change my mind too often and I don't want to deal with the possibility of having to cover one up in some situations. I have seen some really gorgeous work on other people, but it just isn't "me."

I see a lot of very young people getting them and I wonder what they are going to think about them in a few years - when they're 30, will that Slipknot logo still mean the same thing to them? Not to mention that many appear to be amateur jobs - I realize artwork can be expensive, but it's better to pay a bit for sterile tools and a trained artist than a buddy with a MacGyver needle. Of course, reputable artists also wouldn't touch a random 15-year-old in the first place...

No offense, but I don't think that people getting the tattoos and piercings are thinking about what other people are gonna find attractive. Or at least I wasn't. :smt118

I have three tats and each one reminds me of a specific period in my life. To top it off, one of them was done by a friend of mine (he's a pro and had his own shop, no prison ink for me) that just fought back and is a cancer survivor.

While I do think that some people get "fad" tattoos to try and impress others, I know quite a few people that get theirs done for completely personal reasons. I think tats are like scars, you know how and why you got each of them and they are part of who you are. I also think people need to be mature enough in life-experiences to make the decision to get inked and committed to being happy with what they get for the rest of their life.:)

I wasn't dising any one with tats. On guys I think a lot of them look cool. I just never wanted one myself. & on chicks I think they don't look better than unadultered flesh.

You've both given me perspectives that I've never considered before now.
Interesting.
Until now, I had only considered the visual aesthetics.
Thanks.:)

I think that the visual aesthetic part of it is important, but in an intrinsic sort of way, in that you want them to look good. The other parts of it, though, are much more important. (having said that, I spent about six months sketching each of my "art" pieces before I turned them over to someone else to play with)

I don't know that my tattoos so much mark time in my life but are rather about aspects of my personality, who I am, what is important to me...or someone who is important to me (no boyfriends' names :-D).

However - I find gals that are freckled from head to toe extraordinarily attractive. Especially redheads.
What's up with that?:-D
I don't know why but I likes 'em!!:p heh heh heh

My Mom says it's genetic - that I've had a bug up about freckledy redheaded gals since the day I was born.
I can't deny it. I do.:)

Natural tattoos, freckles, are the hottest thing God ever invented for women's adornment other than skin.
You just can't beat a good Irish girl.

Officially...I'll get someone to make one of those temporary ones that I can put on my hand for a few days...don't you need a warm washcloth to make it stick? I'm going to be a tat queen...twittalicious, twittish, twitterific, twitterpated!

My GrandSner swatted my head when I was home in May after she saw the newest addition. I'm not sure if that was about the tattoo or the mowing down of the rhubarb, though. :smt118

Had to be the rhubarb.

Rhubarbarita

To make the juice:

Fresh organic rhubarb, as much as you have, cut into rough chunks
Simple syrup (2 parts water to one part sugar, boiled until sugar dissolves and liquid is clear)1. Place rhubarb chunks in saucepan and cover completely with simple syrup. Simmer until rhubarb falls into threads.
2. Cool in saucepan, then pour into cheesecloth draped in a strainer placed over a bowl. Allow to drip and then squeeze the last of the juice out of the rhubarb pulp.
3. Store juice in a bottle in the refrigerator until a Rhubarbarita urge strikes.

To celebrate that Rhubarbarita urge:
1. Put lots of crushed ice in a tumbler.
2. On top of the ice, pour equal amounts of rhubarb juice and a tasty tequila like Patron Gold. I suggest that this is not the moment to be shy or to go light
3. Stir and adjust sweetness level by squeezing fresh lime into the glass.

What is a Sner? I've never heard that before.

It's a mom. A former boy who was a bit of a dork about mythology told me that in ancient Norse, it meant mother, and my Sner said that several of the guys she works with told her that in Scandinavian countries, it's a diminutive for "mother", but that's not where I got it from. That story requires some alcohol for the telling. :smt118

i have a tattoo. and i love it!!! i got it my freshman year of college, after much deliberation on a place to put it. i had finally decided on my big toe on my right foot. however, that didn't work. you lose a lot of skin on your toes i was told and they didn't guarantee the tattoo. so i chose the top of my foot instead and drew a daisy that i wanted. i went to Jack and Diane's (only the best) and had Marshall "ink me" :-D i have had it for 7 years now and i love it!!!

i have received more compliments on it than negatives. actually, aaron is the only person that ever said he didn't really care for it. i will never have another though. 1. i don't know what i would get 2. i don't know where i would get it (though i have contemplated the underside of the wrist, or the back of the neck).
