Fish-Bait

Had a better weekend than last weekend folks. I decided to take my little partner night fishin' under the lights at the Chevron Refinery in Pascagoula. I figured he would enjoy fishin' past his bedtime, and boy did he.
We left Petal around 4 p.m. and started South. Got to Mom's about 6 p.m. and had a short visit before we were off. When I pulled up to the boat ramp at about 7 p.m. there were folks at each ramp loading/unloading and about 4 boats idlin' and waitin' to take out. I figured I would do a little preparation while we waited. I had my bait bucket with me and figured I would get us some live shrimp to fish with. These grand folks (C.C's. live bait) have just got the place up and runnin' and had some very nice live shrimp to boot. After buying 4 doz. at 3.50 a dozen...:smt118 and unhookin' all the tie downs on the boat we were finally ready to put in. I got the truck parked and fired up the Whaler and we were off.
Got to my spot and anchored up. Now these kind folks at Chevron turn on the lights at around 8 p.m., and soon after the daylight has left the trout start cruisin' around em'. Now in my 20 or so years fishin' this place I have left several times empty handed and pissed off, but not tonight! I cast a jig for awhile and caught two school trout about 14-1/2 in. while my partner worked the net for me and played with the shrimp in the bait bucket. Now fishin' was slow, but the Good Lord gave me a sign. As I stared at the light somethin' came up and just crushed a little school of baitfish! I picked up my old haythrasher (spinnin' reel), tied on a cajun thunder cork, tied on about 30 in. of leader and a 1/0 straight shank wire hook. I directed my partner to gather the first of what turned out to be many a live shrimp to be impaled upon our hook. I made a short cast and plopped that sucker right under the light......the anticipation was killin' me......as the little shrimp tried with all his might to make it to the shadow a huge boil appeared and the cork streaked out of sight! BAM! I set the hook and fought the trout to the boat as my partner worked the net, after a few tries he was able to net that sucker and drag him in the boat. Then he announced "Daddy, it's a huge bass!" I said "No son, it's a speckled trout." and with that he give me a high five! Now we repeated this about 18 times in a couple of hours each takin' a turn with the rod and net. My partner finally annouced that his arms were tired and he was ready to go to bed (something I have never heard him say before) so I figured we better pack it in even though the fish were still biting. He fell fast asleep before we made the short 5 minute ride back to Mom's.
Now I went again the next mornin' and caught 4 more trout off the beach on topwaters. I even caught one that was 23 in. long. Had the boat back on the trailer at 9 a.m.
I'm going to post some pics tonight in my gallery (http://www.myhattiesburg.com/gallery/index.php?cat=12553). So check back this evening.
