I think this is kind of crappy. Talk about kicking someone while they are down.

Wait. I thought that if you got married to a citizen, you became a citizen, so why is she still illegal??

You know, that thought crossed my mind, too. This is what I thought, too, mac.

She came into the country illegally. That is a strike against her even if she has married a US citizen. Even aliens who come here on visas have to go through a lengthy process when you marry a US citizen to become a citizen. It's not automatic.

For some reason lots of US-citizens think that one just needs to get married and poof! instant citzenship. There is so much paperwork involved , it's not funny AND there is a 5-year waiting period AFTER you get married ( legally ) before you can even apply for citizenship ( 3 years if the husband is in the military ). We got married in Germany in 1989, had to fill out tons of papers ( even before we got married ), paid a lot of money, spent hours and hours in the consulate and got pricked and prodded ( just me, my husband was spared that humiliation ) to make sure no contagious or other diseases were being carried into the USA before a temporary green card was issued. I immigrated in 1993 and became a US citizen 2 years ago - again a lot of paperwork and money, interviews, tests and fingerprinting. The fees for greencards were just raised drastically and many legal immigrants may not be able to afford the renewals anymore. I am not saying it's a bad system, just that it is much more complicated than most people think.

I am with Kerry on this one. No need to prosecute and deport her right now, she has enough to worry about. Yes, she is here illegally but i don't see an imminent threat and a few more months are not going to make any difference.

At this point, I'm more worried about the ones currently crossing the Mexican border than the ones who are married to missing American war heroes.
