I think the years of these top 25 films tell a story all by itself.

Schindler's List is the "youngest" movie on there and it was released in 1993.

Is this to say that current movies aren't as good as the classics?

No Roadhouse or Red Dawn......Swayze snubbed again...
I still contend to this day that Roadhouse has something for both guys and gals.
Guys love the fights, music and the naked chicks.
Gals love the music and Patrick Swayze's naked ass.
It's the one DVD I can pop in and not have to argue with my wife about.

Loved the Lord of the Rings movies, but I loved the books much, much, much more. Much more. If you liked the movies and haven't read the books, you are missing huge sections of the story.

Gone with the Wind is the greatest movie ever made, even though I can no longer sit through it. If nothing else, the casting and the design were perfection.

The Green Mile was the most emotionally wrenching movie I've ever seen, and I could not watch it again for anything.

Thank you! That is it. I love that movie. Can't believe that is not on the list! I may have to go and watch it tonight when I get home from work!

I'm not sure what the criteria is for the ratings but it's clear our tastes vary. Heh heh heh. Frankly one movie that I cannot forget, yet it isn't even one of Robin Williams' bottom 5 is Patch Adams. I've never had a movie take me through every human emotion practically in one movie and left me exhausted and exhilarated at the end. Actually Bull Durham is the greatest movie of all times.:-D There are a lot of great movies left off and some pretty sleezy ones included. JMO.

Easy Rider? What a joke! Starring Peter Fonda, a two bit actor, and Joe Namath a no actor. What crap that was.

df, Broadway Joe wasn't in "Easy Rider." Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Jack Nicholson were in that film. Nor, do I think, was Peter Fonda in "C. C. Rider," which Broadway Joe was in.

Now, unless there is an "Easy C. C. Rider" out there in bootlegged DVD-dom, ah . .

I got to thinking about this list tonight, as I watched Animal House for the 100th time.....I'm disturbed by the lack of comedy in the list of greatest films....I say this every year at Oscar time too....Does a movie's ability to make one laugh not fit into the criteria for "greatest movie"?

Here's the Stratton Academy's List of Greatest Comedies (although some may contain some serious subject matter as well) (NO PARTICULAR ORDER)

1) Bull Durham ("Women don't get wooly...they get weary!")

The Searchers was a John Wayne film. I think John Wayne's The Quiet Man should be in there. And for a wonderful Comedy/Character analysis type, Wayne was never better than with Katherine Hepburn in Rooster Cogburn.

I read an article today on one of my favorite films of all time, Blade Runner. I thought it was a great movie, way ahead of it's time with the special effects for when it came out but I had no idea how exceptionally groundbreaking this movie was as to the way movies made since then have been influenced by it.

Entertaining and imaginative? Yes, indeed, but it requires some suspension of belief and common sense.
But, sadly, there's no such thing as Magic. It'd be really neat if there were; but magic just doesn't exist. Sometimes I wish it did.:)

The most recent Top 100 that aired last week included some newer movies. The most recent release on that list was one of the "Lord of the Rings" films - I think "The Fellowship of the Ring." One of the Indiana Jones movies was on there too.

The books are very literate, multi-layered and intelligent. Proof that kids will read given something engaging to read. They're also intelligent enough for adults, like the best children's books always are. Like Lord of the Rings, the movie can't possibly capture the essence of the book.
(Although Maggie Smith and Emma Thompson are absolutely perfect in their roles.)

However, some people just don't like fantasy and sci-fi. Just like I don't like westerns, horror or romance. It's just a matter of personal taste -- certain genres either attract you or they don't.

PS I don't think the movies belong on a greatest movies list either. And John Wayne -- gotta be The Quiet Man.
