They did approve it. At least, the article says they did. Its says they didn't want to approve it, but they did. WHAT?! If they didn't want to approve it, why did they?

It's a line I have been using for awhile to describe what is the matter with parent/children behavoural type crap these days...The Atari was a cheep babysitter thus stopping the life lessons that should have been taught to their children. In other words the parents quit breakin' gallberry bush swithches off and whuppin' tale. When the parent got tired of having to "deal with" a child they would simply say "go play your Atari".

Except in this case, she is likely too young for Atari, lol. Maybe Nintendo...?

WOW we're just not gonna find a happy-medium where we can agree on, are we?
I grew up on video games, starting with the Atari and I was never told to "go play my Atari" if they didn't want to deal with me. In fact I got more "you're playing too much Atari" then I did anything else. Some parents may have used video games as a baby sitter, but really how different is that then sitting them in front of cartoons all day?

Not much different. You see we had a discussion here awhile back maybe in the mall thread or somewhere about the group of college/high school graduates coming through and their work ethic. I get to look at alot of job applications up here where I work and you get stuff on resumes like:
Qualifications: "I can weld anything"
and this applicant will only be 20-25 years old. When I see that is goes straight to the pile because it's complete B.S.
I had an Atari. Much like your parents did I only got to play with it for a little while before I had to go do something constructive. I am not trying to class everyone together here that has had an Atari. But when you get something nowadays that reads"40 Year Old Coach Marries Student" then I tend to use the phrase "It all started with the invention of the Atari". Thus removing the activities between parent/child. Understand better?

There is more then a ten year difference between her and her younger siblings, and there are very big differences in the way they were raised and how they "turned out". I'd very much like to see this other thread you mention above so I can catch up. I have some opinions to offer.

You don't have to hit a child to teach them how to respect others. There are plenty of people all over the world who grew up without corporal punishment who are fine, upstanding people who make contributions to their communities.

the only point is that at 16 she is still a kid at 27 there is no big deal.
I have dated men 12 years older than myself I don't see a problem with the age things. But a child and a 40 married just don't sit right with me. I just don't think at age 16 no person should be getting married.

You know, I really do dislike havin' to spank my 5 yo. He don't get it much. I had to get his attention the other night in the boat though. I turned around for a sec. and he was bent over the side tryin to pic up a piece of sargassum that was floatin' by. Sneak attacks work the best in my book. Gotta' get him when he least expects it and it seems to stick better than "when we get home you are gettin' a whuppin' boy!"

There are always exceptions, though. My mother has a story about a neighbor woman, married with children, probably in her 30's, who ran off with a neighbor boy, aged 18. They were married for fifty years, and very happy. That's about the only case I've ever heard of like that.
I always wonder about men who are not interested in women their own age. Doesn't it say some things about ego, low self-esteem, general stupidity, etc? And yes, in twenty years she's going to be a young woman with an old husband.</sorry,>

Hermione, I am getting old and don't remember if I said anything about the Coach and the 16 year old. I don't agree with that if she is underage and still a student. Yes, it was and people didn't live as long back then so had to start having families early 'cause the Mom sometimes died during childbirth.
Now, with sexual harassment and predators and all rules in companies and schools have to be different.
A coach is in a position of influence and a high school student can be impressionable. Most of the coaches I knew taught some classes.
I once worked for a company that took all this sexual harassment seriously .
The company had strongly enforceable rules to prevent someone abusing their poser and to create a fair atmosphere for co-workers.
I could date someone at my level or lower as long as I did not have authority over them or someone higher up if they did not have power over me. Yes, it was taken seriously.

Not sure what the law is in North Carolina on the legal age of consent. It could be 16, laws vary by state, I know that in MS that the legal age of consent is 17, but there is also a stipulation that a person in a position of authority i.e. law enforcement, teachers, principles, etc.. can not date/or have a relationship with anyone under the age of 18. And from what i gathered from the article the school nor the sheriffs office could find any proof that there was any kind of sexual relationship between them. But that doesn't mean there wasn't. Which is probably why he resigned so that he wouldn't be in a position of authority over her. But it dang sure doesn't make it right. Actually i think its pretty sick but thats just my opinion.

If you've got to spank your kid every day, something is wrong there, IMO.
My kid, as good as he is, gets physical discipline on rare, rare occasions. We tried it for a while, but there was a noticeable difference in his demeanor and the way he interacted with us.
The best way to discipline him is to put him in a corner or take some toys away and put them on a shelf where he can see them but not play with them.
Now, there are times when a quick swat is better, like in fish's case with the leaning over the boat. But then, if the kid has on his life vest, I might have just tipped him on over the side into the water... might have been a better lesson.

Conditions weren't right for tippin' CB. Tide was too fast not to mention we were anchored in 30 ft. of water and jellyfish were abundant. Young-uns under 12 always have to where a life jacket.
