And this is why I try to stay away from rollercoasters.
Officials said they got the call around 5 p.m. Thursday, and both her feet were detached at the ankle.According to MetroSafe dispatch supervisors, the girl was riding the Superman Tower of Power, which is 177 feet tall and drops riders at 54 miles per hour. According to Kentucky Kingdom, the girl was injured when the ride malfunctioned.

I love, love, love rollercoasters. Love them. Giggle hysterically.
What that girl was on was not a roller coaster. You couldn't pay me to get on one of those drop thingies. Never.

I got on one of these at what used to be Jazzland in LA. It was pretty cool. Had more fun watching people ride it than riding it. The faces they made were hilarious!!!!

I actually agree with that. You couldn't give me money to jump on that badboy!

Well, I live in Louisville. It was kind of a figure of speech. Kentucky Kingdom is like five minutes from my house. :)

Every time something is mentioned about feet on here I have a mental scar from this (http://dermatology.cdlib.org/124/case_presentations/pseudomamma/conde.html). Thanks JMB for this (http://www.myhattiesburg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17903&highlight=gellin).

Some years ago when I lived in Bowling Green KY, a student at WKU had both feet amputated when her car went through a guardrail. She was driving back to campus on an icy road because the university had decided not to cancel classes for bad weather. A year or so after the accident, the newspaper did a follow up on the story. It's unbelievable how disabling this injury actually is. It's very hard to walk on two prosthetic feet, and even in other activities her balance was severely affected. Plus there were body-image issues, depression, etc. Virgo, since you've got one of the pre-eminent sites for limb reattachment up there, is there any word on whether efforts were made to reattach the feet?

I am not sure whether they were able to reattach her feet. But here is an update (http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070622/ZONE06/70622013). Very little information is being released. Apparently, Six Flags has closed three other rides at other parks that are similar to the one here in Kentucky.

My heart goes out to the injured, their families and the riders who witnessed that.

The article I read last night said something about her feet being wrapped in a cable which is how they got severed. The article linked above sounds like a whipping cable sliced them off. Either way it's a horrible accident. If they were sliced off there's probably a better chance for re-attachment since they were most likely cleanly severed.
(just a guess)

That's true -- it's crush injuries that are more difficult.

We've reached the outer boundaries of my knowledge on this subject (just worked for doctors, didn't be one. )

When I went to Six Flags in Atlanta on a high school field trip, several people got stuck at the top of one of those rides.

Her feet were reattached today through surgery.

Where does it say they were reattched? I saw the part about surgery, not about the reattachment....?
Her feet were recovered by Six Flags staff and were sent to the hospital with her, McLean said. It doesn't state they were reattached, but this gave hope to the thought.

A lot of places are mentioning reattachment in their headlines, but the stories aren't specifying. I wonder if the stories retracted that bit later or something due to privacy or something?

Yeah, I just watched the local news. There has been NO reattachment. She is still in serious condition at the hospital.

If I'm reading this story right, the ride was once the 'Hellevator' and there's a 'visitor' named Kenneth Lay walking around that day who managed to get quoted. As if the story wasn't grotesque enough already...

Yeah, I got this article from a blog and just read the comments that they were reattached. He's now admitted he was wrong.

Reattachment is harder when things are ripped off as opposed to sliced off.

Just wanted to give everyone an up date. One of the girl's feet was reattached. The other foot was too damaged. She and her family filed a lawsuit yesterday against Six Flags and they released the 911 tapes today from witnesses who saw what happened. Very chilling.
Here are the 911 tapes. (http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070713/NEWS01/70713044)
