I think I might go to Round Island and camp Saturday night. I sold my big boat a couple of years ago so I hafta' take a tent. Been awhile since I been out there. Hope the gnats and skeeters ain't to bad. They usually get bad when the South wind dies and switches around North. That little window is their window of oppurtunity. I hate gnats. I once took my ole Coleman crawdad rowboat over to Bayou Heron. As I rowed from the launch across to the bayou on the other side I was swarmed. Literally covered in gnats. Try runnin' from gnats in a rowboat.......

Anyways weather looks like it's gonna' be o.k. to go, cept' maybe a thunderhead or two may pop up...That lightnin', it ain't somethin' to mess around in. Scares the beJesus out of me! Maybe I'll take my lantern and flounder a little don't know.

Hopefully I will get to do a little fishin' or scoutin' of some sort this weekend. That's if the wife let's me go. I have been the past 2 weekends. We will see.

Feel free to post your Barrier Island Camping experiences here.

Till Next Time,

Fish, before we had children we use to go to Horn island on Friday and not come home until the next Sunday. It was a ball. During the week we pretty much had the whole island to ourselves. we would take a sleeping tent and a big screen tent to do the cooking in. The bugs were not to much trouble on Horn Island. We did however get raviged (SP) by a storm one night. The lightning got so bad that I thought we were goners. The next morning it was a beautful day. we got everything dried out, revived our sprits and got raviged that night. I must admit my wife was a real trouper about the whole thing. It was great fun and we still camp on the islands but not for such a long period of time. Both of my children daughter 18 and son 15 love to go. It is so peacful. Have a great trip and watch for thunder bumpers.

I like East ship. There's not much vegetation so the wind keeps the bugs off.
It's nice & shallow so at night ou can just walk out & pick up crabs, roast 'em on the camp fire. Mmmmmmmmm.....craaaaab.
Also in that little trench in front of the island you can almost always hook into some little black tips or hammerheads.

I have mostly went to horn and petit bois and round...used to go over to Singin' River Island, but now it's the gubment's and they are stingy with it.
The water is so salty right now you can catch sharks on the beaches and up the rivers a little ways...Lost 3 rigs last weekend to those critters.

Got a small boat now. We may opt for Petit Bois if it ain't to rough for my old back. The reason I like Round is if you gotta make a run for it the Causeway ain't but a couple miles...and it's pretty easy to navigate around if a storm approaches to stay out of the way of the seas.

Nuthin' like fresh crab on an open fire and a cold beer, no...12 cold beers.

I got so much stuff in the Whaler (http://www.myhattiesburg.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=random&cat=12553&pos=-806) I think it's gonna sink, but whalers don't sink!

This shot is from back on Nov. of 03 on the second night at Round Island.
I was taking a shot of the Sunset and this Brown Pelican came cruisin' by.
I call it a money shot because it was just so random. We were actually on the West side of Round and the strip of land you see on the right side horizon is Ocean Springs. It helps if you blow it up real big on the screen from the gallery.
I tried to upload some more recent ones last night but I have to resize them because they are so big.

Well FB, I'm a Cat Island camper myself. About 3-4 years ago I talked the wife into going out there with me. Southeast wind blew all night about 20mph. Miserable trip to say the least. She decided against anymore overnight trips. I tell ya...just one good trip will get you addicted to it.

Lot's of wind is better than no wind in my book. Take her back when it cools off a little in the fall. She'll probably enjoy it more. I do have to say I am addicted.

I don't mind some wind just not from the southeast. I hate those "dead wind" days due to skeeters, nats and the unbearable heat.

WIND! Gods gift for sailing!!! ( and screwing the saudis at the same time). Burned at least a pint of fuel in 3 days. But don't be in a hurry!

So you been round da' world?

Naw, just my little world of south MS! No traffic, few people, and a lot of nature. The anti-thesis of my daily life. Not around the world, but definately another world only a few miles away. Gotta love it! I need to meet you out there and learn how to catch fish while i'm wasting time on the islands!

I need a boat so I can ease out there some. I've ridden jet skis out to Ship and Cat several times, but they aren't the best vessels for toting camping gear. I'd love to go camping out there one night. Some friends and I that normally go 4 wheeler riding/camping have talked about it several times. One of them has a boat, maybe we'll have to load up a bunch of folks and go sometime soon.

LOL! I showed Butterball this thread and asked him if he had ever been. With a very serious look on his face he replied, "No, and I don't intend to." Guess I'll have to wait until the Boy Scout go back out and I'll just tag along with them. :)
