AOL Auto's has a list of things to do that might help you avoid that speeding ticket. Many have heard all of this before, but one thing that I've always heard is that you could get a reckless driving ticket even when not speeding. How? It relates to this item:

· Drive within 5-10 mph of surrounding traffic. Police officers are usually looking for drivers who are going noticeably faster than the other cars on the road. If you're within a pack of cars all going 5 to 10 mph over the limit, you've automatically improved your odds of not being the one that gets pulled over, even though you're all technically speeding. The police officer has to pick one car; if you go with the flow of traffic, it probably won't be you. And it definitely won't be you if you don't speed in the first place.
If your driving 15 mph faster than everyone else in heavy rain, even if it's 55 in a 55, then you might get a ticket for reckless driving. I try to never go much faster than the average traffic speed.

here's a news flash. Don't Speed. Save lives. If you go 10 mph over the speed limit while driving across Hattiesburg, how much time do you think you will save? 1 Minute? 2 minutes? If you think your time is that valuable you have a wildly inflated sense of your importance to the overall scheme of things.

The first time I personally drove through Nashville, I didn't know what to do. The state boys were sitting in the medians throughout the area, but the flow of traffic was averaging 85 mph. Jeff said, "Get a ticket; get killed. Your choice." I went with the flow, but there were still idiots going even faster.

My question to LE is when the flow of traffic is speeding like that, who DO you pick to pull over if nobody in particular is going faster?

No, but with my luck, I'd be the one with the hook in mouth. :)

I made the mistake of driving through Washington DC on a motorcycle at five o'clock. If you went slower than ninety you'd get run over, literally it was bumper to bumper, door handle to door handle, flirting with 100 MPH on the straight aways, and those people up there don't even understand the concept of "lanes".

One of my favorite memories is of driving up Veteran's (Hwy 11) in the mornings, in the left lane because I had to make a left turn at 28th extended, and having an HPD car up the tailpipe, no way to move into the right lane. If I sped up I would be speeding. If I didn't speed up, he was about to drive over me (I was in a small 4-cyl rice-burner.) I never understood it. Was he trying to force me to speed?

The best thing to do is put your blinker on indicating you are getting over and speed up and move. NEVER hit your brakes to fall in behind the car on your right. Always keep the flow moving forward, not backwards.

I was actually in nashville this weekend and the only thing that bothered me is hauling ass down those hills...cause ya know...if you actually have to stop youre probably screwed...ya know...with the speed and going down hill thing.

Will you get you a ticket faster than anything else!! These things don't always work, and you can rest assured that if you get pulled over with one of these hanging in the window, you will have a neat little piece of paper to go with it.

I have one of those hanging from my window. Left over from long-ass trips across the country. It chirps at just about everything, so most of the time, I tune it out.

Got pulled over in Kansas for doing 90 in a 75 (because really, what fun is Kansas if you can't race across it?), and the trooper made a comment about it and how it didn't save me. I laughed and said that it might have if I'd actually had it on. He bent down and looked at it, saw none of the lights were on, and laughed with me. Wrote the ticket for 80 in a 75.

Years, ago going down Broadway, I heard a honking, buzzing sound and it was an officer wanting to go around me. He was literally on my tail. I moved over and let him pass.

i've had highway patrol get right up on me and turn on their white lights for me to get over.

all this while doing 80-85

i've slowed down tho- since my whole speeding ticket fiasco- but i still drive fast- 75 on the way up and down now insted of 85-

Is this just for police, or for all cars? Because if I need to change lanes and another car is next to me or approaching fast enough, I usually drop back to change lanes rather than speed up.

Speeding ticket avoidance tip #1: Don't go over the speed limit.

What they need to do is write more tickets for those who go under the minimum speed limit. They can cause wrecks, too.

I've always heard, even in driver's ed, that an officer with no blue lights flashing must drive, by law, the same as everyone else. So we must get out of the way even if no lights flashing?

yea, if you know whats good for you. just joking. a lot of times they respond to a call that does not need to be code2 or 3, but they really need to go in a hurry and sometimes they have to drive quite a few miles to get there.

That's right, I say "Damn" those cops that drive above the posted speed limit, even if they're trying to get to that alarm call where my family might need them, or something. I have to drive the speed limit going to the post office, they should have to do the same going to a child choking call. Even though everytime I see those blue lights I think I should just stop in the middle, (by no means the shoulder) the very middle, of the road, that makes sense to me.

YOU HAD BETTER GET OUT OF THEIR WAY. they could be coming to my house cause I just called in a call for service, and they are trying to get there in a timely fashion so I wont bitch and complain cause it took them more than 5 minutes to get there in rush hour traffic, cause my call is more important than anything else at that time!! But that goes back to an emergency call, right? Blue lights?

To me, an officer flying down the road without blue lights or a siren is just as dangerous as someone else flying down the road in a normal car. I respect the authority, but that's what the equipment is for.

In a perfect world, you'd be right. The hard truth is that MOST Mississippians have no idea what to do when any emergency vehicle gets behind them with emergency lights / siren activated. Most times, they just stop in the road, and as crowded as Hardy street is, that just doesn't work. I found it easier to just go, and have people think to themselves that I was late for the "Hot Donuts Now" cattle call. But, in the end, you're right, blue lights (or red for our Fire/EMS folks) and sirens are for emergencies.

But, then again, I didn't write speeding tickets. I didn't think it was right to cite someone for doing something that I'd done, and planned to do again. The same reasoning is why I didn't lead my department in citations for driving while naked.

I coulda used one of those yesterday. (Or some of Petal Polk's advice.) . I got a ticket in Petal. The husband and I had just had a spat, and I was pissed off and wasn't paying attention, and got popped for 50 in a 35 on the 3 mile cut off.

I went 5 years without getting a ticket, then when I was in the delta for a year I got 2 within a few months of each other. So this makes 3 in 2 years. Nationwide is gonna eat my lunch!

Not every call requires us to run with the blue lights on, but that doesn't mean we're not in a hurry for whatever reason. We're damned if we do and damned if we don't so just get over it. I think I'll go speed somewhere now.

What if you're on Hardy or 98 and can't move over when you see a or hear a blue light or siren? Stay in the right lane even if you need to turn?

I am being serious. And if You are in the right lane, move over or just stop? I try to find somewhere to get off over to the shoulder or if in right lane, turn off to clear the road?

mAYBE, WE ALL NEED A REFRESHER COURSE?????

I don't think it would be wise to start changing lanes. Just pull off, or stay put.
